Book excerpt: This book is designed to offer a comprehensive beginning course in the technique of the north Indian keyless bamboo flute. Profusely illustrated with charts, exercises, photographs of playing positions and decorative material, the manual will enable a person to appropriate authentic raga materials and methods of development, as taught by the late master flutist and flutemaker, Shri Devendra Murdeshwar. Included are detailed explanations of the fundamentals of a number of essential topics in Hindustani music. These include the scalar system; the concept of raga; microtonalism; the system of teaching and learning; cyclical meter, and others. The included audio CD demonstrates all the notated examples and lessons included in the book, and also includes a full performance by Mr. Leifer of Raga Yemen, one of the ragas taught in the book. This manual will prove especially useful to players seeking to broaden their viewpoint and range of expression on the transverse flute ? an instrument which, in various forms, is played all over the world. Other students of Indian music may also find it useful for the compendious nature of the basic information offered on the music?s performance.Lyon Leifer began studying Indian music and bansuri in 1965, after obtaining a degree in flute from the Juilliard School and holding the second flute chair in the St. Louis Symphony. In addition to Devendra Murdeshwar, his flute teachers have included Julius Baker, Walfrid Kujala and Emil Eck. Mr. Leifer resides in the Chicago area where he is an active performer and teacher of both Western and Indian classical music. Appearances have taken him to venues ranging from New York?s Lincoln Center to the hall of the Shanghai Symphony, with appearances in any number of places in-between. His performances of raga music on the bansuri have been particularly welcomed by Indian audiences and press.

Book Integrating Indifference

Download or read book Integrating Indifference written by Virginie Van Ingelgom and published by ECPR Press. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have European citizens become increasingly Eurosceptic over the last two decades, turning their backs on European integration? Though many journalists, politicians and academics argue that they have, this book suggests that reactions to European integration cannot be reduced uniquely to a rise in Euroscepticism, but that indifference and ambivalence need also to be brought into the picture when studying EU legitimacy and its politicisation. Drawing on new evidence from survey data from eight founding member states, and focus groups conducted in francophone Belgium, France and Great Britain, Integrating Indifference explores the various faces of citizens’ indifference, from fatalism, to detachment, via sheer indecision. This book adopts a pioneering mixed-methods approach to analysing the middle-of-the-road attitudes of ordinary citizens who consider themselves neither Europhiles nor Eurosceptics. Complementing existing quantitative and qualitative literature in the field, it opens up new perspectives on attitudes towards European integration.

Fourteen years of twists and turns, one after another, in the life of Krishn! Who were his friends? What games did he play? How did he grow up? When did he start playing the flute? Who was his teacher? How did he become a hero by the time he became a teenager? Did he commandeer an army in the battlefield at fourteen? Who was Radha? Who was she married to? Krishn awaits you…"

Those who can afford it, have withdrawn to the well-protected gated communities, while the police have left entire neighborhoods to their own devices. In these lawless blank spots the authorities use so-called pushers to maintain a level of constant unrest between Arab clans, Turkish gangs, and Chechen brotherhoods. They are mavericks, men and women outside the law, who only answer to their supervisors based in the LKA, which is short for Landeskriminalamt, the State Office of Criminal Investigation. This is the story of Hauke the Pusher and Detective Natasha...
