Download or read book Money and Banking Classic Reprint written by John Thom Holdsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking The treatment of Money in Part I follows in a general way the lines made familiar by other standard works to which frequent references are made in the footnotes and m the suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. The efiort has been made to compress this part of the book into the smallest space consistent with a presentation of essentials in the history, theory and principles of money, leaving the major part of the book for the discussion of the principles and practices of banking. In the chapters devoted to banking organization and practice it has been impossible to give consideration to the varying local cus toms and practices of different types of banking institutions. The aim has been to describe those principles and practices of commercial banking that are common to all banks. Though the new Federal reserve system introduces far reaching changes in our banking and currency system, many years must elapse before its full effects can be definitely measured. Throughout Part II frequent reference is made to various provisions of the Act of 1913, and Chapter XXII is devoted to an analysis of its leading provisions, and a summary of the steps taken in the establishment of the new system. A proper understanding of the new system, how ever, can be gained only by following its Operations and marking the effect of changes that will certainly be made in the law from time to time. It is believed that the addition of the complete text of the Federal Reserve Act (appendix) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Money and Banking

Download or read book Money and Banking written by Horace White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking: Illustrated by American History Very few persons, if any, are satisfied with our present monetary condition. While I write these lines a withdrawal of $2, 3 gold from the Treasury causes a fresh tremor and confusion of tongues. Everybody assures everybody else, and tries to assure himself, that it is of no consequence. Probably no harm will come of it, but why should it be noticed at all, except by a few dealers in foreign exchange? Because the public Treasury undertakes to maintain the ultimate gold reserve of the country, and because people doubt whether it can do so at all times. Are these doubts unreasonable? The only law on the statute book really effective for the discharge of this obligation was passed in 1862 for a different emergency, had been forgotten a quar ter of a century, and was discovered by accident the last day in the afternoon. As regards the act of 187 5 (under which gold was twice procured last year for the replenish ment of the Treasury) it is a matter of dispute whether it is still in force, or whether it lapsed when specie payments were resumed. A dispute on such a question is itself an incentive to panic. Moreover, everything depends upon the mood and temper of the Administration for the time being whether such powers as the law confers shall be exercised wisely and promptly, or exercised at all. Book Banking and Business Classic Reprint

Download or read book Banking and Business Classic Reprint written by H. Parker Willis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Banking and Business The authors have therefore endeavored, in this volume, after the first preliminary and general ideas have been considered, to introduce the student to the current organization and business practice of com mercial banks. In so doing, moreover, it has been sought to emphasize less the internal organization of the bank itself than its business aspect as viewed from the outside. Particular attention has been given to the financing of the individual enterprise, the prob lems which must be met by the business man, in whatever occupation engaged, in connection with the transaction of the banking side of his operations. A succeeding section of the book has for reasons of convenience been devoted largely to a descriptive out line of banking in various aspects, an understanding of which seems necessary to full comprehension of present banking problems and conditions, although, strictly speaking, they would not find a place in a treatise upon banking in the commercial or narrower sense of the term. These phases of the discussion having been completed, the way is paved for a relatively brief outline statement of the relation of the bank to the monetary system and Of its function in the develop ment of prices. Download or read book The Elements of Banking Classic Reprint written by Henry Dunning MacLeod and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Banking 1. Banking is a department of the great Science of Economics, which is the Science of Exchanges, or of Commerce in its widest extent. The word Economics is derived from the Greek olkof, which is the technical term in Attic law for Property of all sorts and descriptions, whatever its nature be, and vouos, a law. Hence the word Economics means the Science which treats of the Laws which govern the relations of Exchangeable Quantities. Banking, as will be explained more fully hereafter, is that department of the Science of Economics which treats of the exchanges of Money for Credit, and of Credit for Credit. 2. Aristotle says: - "We call Wealth everything whose value is measured by Money," or rather, we may say everything which is exchangeable, as Money itself is an Exchangeable Quantity. Aristotle's definition of Wealth is now generally accepted by modern Economists as the true one, thus Mill says: - "Everything forms therefore a part of Wealth which has power of purchasing." Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Finance: With Chapters on Money and Banking No one will question the need of a systematic treatise on National and State finance. The exercise of more intelligent public economy and more efficient justice are matters of great practical importance with many who feel the burden of taxation. These matters are not less vital to the toiling millions, whose struggle to live has grown fiercer under the withering sun of world-wide competition. Nor is the interest of the moralist and patriot less significant, even though it cannot be measured by the same standards of pain and pleasure that are applied to others. I have tried to make a book for that large class of readers who, it is believed, are in quest of information presented in an orderly form concerning public expenditures and revenues, money and banking, and know not where to look in any single work. Of course, many articles may be found in magazines, government reports and the publications dealing with particular financial questions, but something more than these is desired. An explanation may be made concerning the use of references. In a few cases a reference has been given to strengthen the assertion in the text. In other cases references have been added to indicate where more complete sources of readily accessible information may be found, should the reader desire to extend his inquiries.
