Download or read book The Ottoman World written by Hakan T. Karateke and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ottoman lands, which extended from modern Hungary to the Arabian peninsula, were home to a vast population with a rich variety of cultures. The Ottoman World is the first primary source reader to bring a wide and diverse set of voices across Ottoman society into the classroom. Written in many languages—not only Ottoman Turkish but also Arabic, Armenian, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, and Persian—these texts, here translated, span the extent of the early modern Ottoman empire, from the 1450s to 1700. Instructors are supplied with narratives conveying the lived experiences of individuals through texts that highlight human variety and accelerate a trend away from a state-centric approach to Ottoman history. In addition, samples from court registers, legends, biographical accounts, hagiographies, short stories, witty anecdotes, jokes, and lampoons provide exciting glimpses into popular mindsets in Ottoman society. By reflecting new directions in the scholarship with an innovative choice of texts, this collection provides a vital resource for teachers and students.

Download or read book Connected Code written by Yasmin B. Kafai and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why every child needs to learn to code: the shift from “computational thinking” to computational participation. Coding, once considered an arcane craft practiced by solitary techies, is now recognized by educators and theorists as a crucial skill, even a new literacy, for all children. Programming is often promoted in K-12 schools as a way to encourage “computational thinking”—which has now become the umbrella term for understanding what computer science has to contribute to reasoning and communicating in an ever-increasingly digital world. In Connected Code, Yasmin Kafai and Quinn Burke argue that although computational thinking represents an excellent starting point, the broader conception of “computational participation” better captures the twenty-first-century reality. Computational participation moves beyond the individual to focus on wider social networks and a DIY culture of digital “making.” Kafai and Burke describe contemporary examples of computational participation: students who code not for the sake of coding but to create games, stories, and animations to share; the emergence of youth programming communities; the practices and ethical challenges of remixing (rather than starting from scratch); and the move beyond stationary screens to programmable toys, tools, and textiles.
Download or read book The Effect of Toxic Leadership written by U. S. Army U.S. Army War College and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When focusing on toxic leadership, many researchers emphasize the symptoms of toxicity (individual characteristics, traits) and not the disease (culture, climate, outcomes). Although characteristics and traits may be helpful in identify toxic leaders, they fall short of a holistic view by failing to identify or discuss how an organization's culture may contribute to toxicity in its leaders. Culture is a key strategic factor in predicting behaviors and outcomes. An organization's culture may have a moderating effect on the behavior of its members and may ultimately serve to promote toxic behavior. Toxic leadership is a topic of increasing interest in the military and civilian sectors. In this paper I will examine the possible cause and effect relationship between toxic leaders and the damaging cultures they foster. I will begin by defining toxic leadership; I will then use a classification-oriented approach to analyze the effect of toxic leadership on the elements of organizational culture: values, norms, and behaviors. Finally, I will explore the moderating environmental effects that may increase or mitigate the organization's vulnerability to the damage caused by toxic leaders. The intent of this paper is to add to the understanding of this significant organizational concern through initial conceptualization and theory.

Download or read book Cultural Functions of Translation written by Christina Schäffner and published by Multilingual Matters Limited. This book was released on 1995 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the far-reaching effects that translated texts may have in the target culture and illustrates that translation as a culture-transcending process is an important way of forming cultural identities and of positioning cultures. Lawrence Venuti discusses the enormous power translation wields in constructing representations of foreign cultures. The conservative or transgressive effects of translation are illustrated by several translation projects from different periods: novels, philosophical texts, and religious texts. Candace Seguinot focuses on effects of globalisation for translating advertising. She argues that the marketing of goods and services across cultural boundaries involves an understanding of culture and semiotics that goes well beyond both language and design. Translation is a matter of making intelligible a whole culture. The translator, as the expert communicator, is at the crucial centre of a long chain of communication from the original initiator to the ultimate receiver of a message. The papers and the debates take up important related issues: translation strategies (foreignising vs. domesticating strategies; translation and marketing strategies); the knowledge required of translators as interlingual and intercultural mediators; ethical responsibilities; and consequences for translator training. Contributors to the debates include Mona Baker, Terry Hale, Paul Kussmaul, Kirsten Malmkjaer, Peter Newmark and Douglas Robinson.
