Book Introduction to Bangladesh

Download or read book Introduction to Bangladesh written by Gilad James, PhD and published by Gilad James Mystery School. This book was released on with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangladesh is a country located in South Asia, with a population of over 160 million people. The country has a rich history, with ancient kingdoms and empires dating back to 1000 BCE. Modern Bangladesh was born in 1971, when it declared its independence from Pakistan following a bloody war. The country is characterized by its unique geography, with the Ganges Delta dominating its landscape. The delta is a vast network of interconnected rivers, canals, and marshes, and is the largest river delta in the world. Bangladesh is also one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with an average of over 1100 people per square kilometer. Despite being one of the poorest and most populous countries in the world, Bangladesh has made impressive progress in recent years. The country has a rapidly growing economy, fueled by the garment industry, which is worth over 30 billion USD annually. The government has also made significant strides in improving economic and social conditions for its citizens, with investments in education and healthcare, and initiatives to reduce poverty and increase employment. However, Bangladesh continues to face significant challenges, including political instability, corruption, and environmental degradation.

Book Identity Nationhood and Bangladesh Independent Cinema

Download or read book Identity Nationhood and Bangladesh Independent Cinema written by Fahmidul Haq and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how independent filmmakers from Bangladesh have represented national identity in their films. The focus of this book is on independent and art house filmmakers and how cinema plays a vital role in constructing national and cultural identity. The authors examine post-2000 films which predominantly deal with issues of national identity and demonstrate how they tackle questions of national identity. Bangladesh is seemingly a homogenous country consisting 98% of Bengali and 90% of Muslim. This majority group has two dominant identities – Bengaliness (the ethno-linguistic identity) and Muslimness (the religious identity). Bengaliness is perceived as secular-modern whereas Muslimness is perceived as traditional and conservative. However, Bangladeshi independent and art house filmmakers portray the nationhood of the country with an enthusiasm and liveliness that exceeds these two categories. In addition to these categories, the authors add two more dimensions to the approach to discuss identity: Popular Religion and Transformation. The study argues that these identity categories are represented in the films, and that they both reproduce and challenge dominant discourses of nationalism. Providing a new addition to the discourse of contemporary national identity, the book will be of interest to researchers studying international film and media studies, independent cinema studies, Asian cinema, and South Asian culture, politics, and identity politics.

Book excerpt: This encyclopedia contains 50 thorough profiles of the most numerically significant immigrant groups now making their homes in the United States, telling the story of our newest immigrants and introducing them to their fellow Americans. One of the main reasons the United States has evolved so quickly and radically in the last 100 years is the large number of ethnically diverse immigrants that have become part of its population. People from every area of the world have come to America in an effort to realize their dreams of more opportunity and better lives, either for themselves or for their children. This book provides a fascinating picture of the lives of immigrants from 50 countries who have contributed substantially to the diversity of the United States, exploring all aspects of the immigrants' lives in the old world as well as the new. Each essay explains why these people have come to the United States, how they have adjusted to and integrated into American society, and what portends for their future. Accounts of the experiences of the second generation and the effects of relations between the United States and the sending country round out these unusually rich and demographically detailed portraits.

Book Bengali Culture Over a Thousand Years

Download or read book Bengali Culture Over a Thousand Years written by Ghulam Murshid and published by Niyogi Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art, literature, music and other intellectual expressions of a particular society are together regarded as the culture of that society. Ideas, customs and social behaviour of a particular people or society are also its ‘culture’. Contrary to what we think, it is not easy to describe ‘culture’, nor is it easy to write the cultural history. Writing the history of Bengali culture is even more difficult because Bengali society is truly plural in its nature, made even more so by its political division. The two main religious communities that share this culture are often more aware of the differences between them than the similarities. Nonetheless, the people remain bound by history and a shared language and literature. Ghulam Murshid’s Bengali Culture over a Thousand Years is the first non-partisan and holistic discussion of Bengali culture. Written for the general reader, the language is simple and the style lucid. It shows how the individual ingredients of Bengali culture have evolved and found expression, in the context of political developments and how certain individuals have moulded culture. Above all, the book presents the identity and special qualities of Bengali culture. The book was originally published in Bengali in Dhaka in 2006. This is the first English translation.

Book excerpt: The culture of a society is made up of all its ideas good or bad, ways of behavior, language, thoughts, music, dress, ways of working and playing, and tools and other objects made and used by the people of that society. The people of Bangladesh have their own culture. They are religious, hospitable and conservative and they can rightly boast of a rich cultural heritage. They have their own language, religion, ways of behavior, ways of speaking and eating, games and sports, dress, music, social and religious values and customs, art and literature. Although they have a rich and traditional culture, it is going under the influence of foreign culture. As a result, the culture of Bangladesh is being adversely affected. Western culture and satellite channels are playing vital role in this regard. Nowadays the young generation of Bangladesh is very fond of western band and pop music, and dresses. They are following western culture in all cases of their life.
