Download or read book Electoral Corruption in Bangladesh written by Muhammad Yeahia Akhter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Rigging elections in favour of those in power has become a common practice in Bangladesh. Muhammad Yeahia Akhter focuses on the significance of elections in this ostensibly democratic state and portrays how electoral corruption has damaged the process of democratic consolidation. The author reveals the failure of both civilian and military governments to obtain democratic legitimacy and/or credibility through free and fair elections. The study examines the relatively democratic, but largely non-transparent nature of electioneering under non-partisan caretaker governments. The study provides a source of understanding of fair electoral process for the politicians and electoral officials in Bangladesh and other democratizing polities. It provides valuable information to the policy makers and practitioners in order to reform the electoral process in Bangladesh and in other similar countries.

Download or read book Social Formation in Dhaka 1985 2005 written by Kamal Siddiqui and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the twenty-first century, more than fifty per cent of the world's population will live in an urban environment. Most of this new urban growth will take place in Asia and Africa, yet most governments in these two continents seem woefully unprepared for the challenges they will face in providing their urban citizens with the basic services and security from poverty, environmental degradation and crime. It is in this context that in-depth studies which lay bare the contours and characteristics of society and institutions in the urban setting of Third World countries assume importance and urgency. Most studies on urbanisation in developing countries concentrate on slums and shanty towns in isolation from the rest of the society. By contrast, Social Formation in Dhaka, 1985-2005 analyses urbanisation and urban society in a holistic manner, connecting the poor with the non-poor and delineating the change agents of the city. As the first longitudinal study of the social structure of any Third World Megacity, this book will be of interest to urban sociologists, policy-makers, NGOS, and researchers engaged in understanding the development in cities in the global south.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines civil service pay and classification in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and developments in level and structures of employment and of pay there from 1977 to 1987. In that period, civil service pay came under increasing pressure in South Asia, leading to a weakening of the civil service's traditional role as the leading employer in terms of pay, conditions and job security.

Download or read book Politics and Governance in Bangladesh written by Ipshita Basu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its Independence in 1971, Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in terms of reducing poverty levels, achieving high levels of economic growth over a sustained period of time, and meeting its Millennium Development Goals (MDG) targets set by the United Nations. With some justification, Bangladesh is considered an international development success story, and the country appears to be well on track to meet its policy target of becoming a middle-income country by 2021, the same year the country will celebrate 50 years of Independence. This book explores the central issue of Bangladeshi politics: the weakness of governance. The coexistence of a poor governance track record and a relatively strong socioeconomic performance makes Bangladesh an intriguing case which throws up exciting and relevant conceptual and policy challenges. Structured in four sections - Political Settlement, Elites and Deep Structures; Democracy, Citizenship and Values; Civil Society, Local Context and Political Change; Informality and Accountability – the book identifies and engages with these challenges. Chapters by experts in the field share a number of conceptual and epistemological principles and offer a combination of theoretical and empirical insights, and cover a good range of contemporary issues and debate. Employing a structurally determinist perspective, this book explains politics and society in Bangladesh from a novel perspective. Academics in the field of governance and politics in developing countries, with a focus on South Asia and Bangladesh will welcome its publication.

The book examines policies and initiatives of the SAARC in tackling these issues and also analyzes their implementation by member countries. Comprehensive and topical, this volume will be useful for scholars and researchers of South Asian Studies, environmental studies, climate change studies, public policy and governance, development studies, international relations, regional cooperation, and political studies. It will also be of importance to policymakers and NGOs working in this field.
Download or read book Quality Public Management written by George Beam and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2001 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manyprobability books are written by mathematicians and have the built-in bias that the reader is assumed to be a mathematician coming to the material for its beauty. This textbook is geared towards beginning graduate students from a variety of disciplines whose primary focus is not necessarily mathematics for its own sake. Instead, "A Probability Path" is designed for those requiring a deep understanding of advanced probability for their research in statistics, applied probability, biology, operations research, mathematical finance and engineering. A one-semester course is laid out in an efficient and readable manner covering the core material. The first three chapters provide a functioning knowledge of measure theory. Chapter 4 discusses independence, with expectation and integration covered in Chapter 5, followed by topics on different modes of convergence, laws of large numbers with applications to statistics (quantile and distribution function estimation) and applied probability. Two subsequent chapters offer a careful treatment of convergence in distribution and the central limit theorem. The final chapter treats conditional expectation and martingales, closing with a discussion of two fundamental theorems of mathematical finance. Like "Adventures in Stochastic Processes," Resnick's related and very successful textbook, "A Probability Path" is rich in appropriate examples, illustrations and problems and is suitable for classroom use or self-study. The present uncorrected, softcover reprintis designed to make this classic textbookavailable to a wider audience. "This book is different from the classical textbooks on probability theory in that it treats the measure theoretic background not as a prerequisite but as an integral part of probability theory. The result is that the reader gets a thorough and well-structured framework needed to understand the deeper concepts of current day advanced probability as it is used in statistics, engineering, biology and finance.... The pace of the book is quick and disciplined. Yet there are ample examples sprinkled over the entire book and each chapter finishes with a wealthy section of inspiring problems. " -Publications of the International Statistical Institute "This textbook offers material for a one-semester course in probability, addressed to students whose primary focus is not necessarily mathematics.... Each chapter is completed by an exercises section. Carefully selected examples enlighten the reader in many situations. The book is an excellent introduction to probability and its applications. " -Revue Roumaine de Mathematiques Pures et Appliquees
