Book Meantone Temperaments on Lutes and Viols

Download or read book Meantone Temperaments on Lutes and Viols written by David Dolata and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for musicians by a musician, Meantone Temperaments on Lutes and Viols demystifies tuning systems by providing the basic information, historical context, and practical advice necessary to easily achieve more satisfying tuning results on fretted instruments. Despite the overwhelming organological evidence that many of the finest lutenists, vihuelists, and viola da gamba players in the Renaissance and Baroque eras tuned their instruments in one of the meantone temperaments, most modern early instrument players today still tune to equal temperament. In this handbook richly supplemented with figures, diagrams, and music examples, historical performers will discover why temperaments are necessary and how they work, descriptions of a variety of temperaments, and their application on fretted instruments. This technical book provides downloadable audio tracks and other tools for fretted instrument players to achieve more stable consonances, colorful dissonances, and harmonic progressions that vividly propel the music forward.

Book Transitional Justice in Rwanda

Download or read book Transitional Justice in Rwanda written by Gerald Gahima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitional Justice in Rwanda: Accountability for Atrocity comprehensively analyzes the full range of the transitional justice processes undertaken for the Rwandan genocide. Drawing on the author’s extensive professional experience as the principal justice policy maker and the leading law enforcement officer in Rwanda from 1996-2003, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the social, political and legal challenges faced by Rwanda in the aftermath of the genocide and the aspirations and legacy of transitional justice. The book explores the role played by the accountability processes not just in pursuing accountability but also in shaping the reconstruction of Rwanda’s institutions of democratic governance and political reconciliation. Central to this exploration will be the examination of whether or not transitional justice in Rwanda has contributed to a foundational rule of law reform process. While recognizing the necessity of pursuing accountability for mass atrocity, the book argues that a maximal approach to accountability for genocide may undermine the promotion of core objectives of transitional justice. Taking on one of the key questions facing practitioners and scholars of transitional justice today, the book suggests that the pursuit of mass accountability, particularly where socio-economic resources and legal capacity is limited, may destabilize the process of rule of law reform, endangering core human rights norms. Moreover, the book suggests that pursuing a strategy of mass accountability may undermine the process of democratic transition, particularly in a context where impunity for crimes committed by the victors of armed conflicts persists. Highlighting the ongoing democratic deficit in Rwanda and resulting political instability in the Great Lakes region, the book argues that the effectiveness of transitional justice ultimately hinges on the nature and success of political transition.

Book excerpt: Muhammad's Revenge is a collection of short stories that literally forces the reader to bring the realities of life on this earth, along with such terrible things as war, into sharp focus and to concentrate on why things happen as they do-when they do-and what happens to the soul when this life on earth is over. In the title story, "Muhammad's Revenge," we see how the war experiences of a single human being can bring an apocalypse to the entire world. In "Peace on Earth" the realities of the horrors of World War I become starkly vivid and real but so does the humanity of mankind when the Germans and the English armies call a one-day truce, a historic event, that actually did happen. In "Big Sugar," as in all these stories, we see the personal as well as private lives of many of the characters, in their darkest moments and how one life's circumstances which end in a tragic death can alter history for all the others involved for the better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this extraordinary book, celebrated journalist Jacques Pauw gives a human face to some of the most tumultuous events in recent African history. Rat Roads chronicles the remarkable journey of Kennedy Gihana, a young Tutsi man who fought against the genocidaires in Rwanda, but was part of an army that committed horrifying atrocities in Africa’s bloodiest conflict. Seeking education instead of war, he walked thousands of kilometres to South Africa, where he slept in parks, lived on the street and worked as a low-paid security guard until he had saved enough money to enrol for a law degree. In 2011 he took the podium at the University of Pretoria to receive a master’s degree in international law. Rat Roads combines many strands of life in Africa. Besides being the chronicle of one man’s incredible journey, it addresses issues such as civil conflict, xenophobia and the plight of refugees. It also explores the nature of war crimes and guilt, and gives insight into present-day Rwanda, showing how one tyranny has replaced another. Rat Roads is a searing story of hardship and survival, and an unforgettable tale of courage and triumph.

Book Some Other Note

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English comedy from the fifteenth to the early seventeenth century abounds in song lyrics, but most of the original tunes were thought to have been lost--until now. By deducing that playwrights borrowed melodies from songs they already knew, Ross W. Duffin has used the existing English repertory of songs, both popular and composed, to reconstruct hundreds of songs from more than a hundred plays and other stage entertainments. Thanks to Duffin's incredible breakthrough, these plays have been rendered performable with period music for the first time in five hundred years. Some Other Note not only brings these songs back from the dead, but tells a thrilling tale of the investigations that unraveled these centuries-old mysteries.

Book Rule of Law through Human Rights and International Criminal Justice

Download or read book Rule of Law through Human Rights and International Criminal Justice written by Charles Riziki Majinge and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was undertaken not so much as a farewell to the contribution Adama Dieng has selflessly offered to humanity, but mainly as a token of appreciation to his dedication and contribution to the rule of law and human rights, especially in his native continent, Africa. As a high-ranking international civil servant, diplomat, teacher, activist and accomplished jurist, Adama Dieng has inspired, and indeed continues to inspire, a generation of men and women both in Africa and beyond with his unqualified commitment to the advancement of the ideals reflected in the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Through his work and commitment to the cause of international justice and conflict prevention, he has consistently placed the interests of his fellow men and women, and indeed those of his continent, before his own interests. It is, therefore, in recognition of his efforts that, his fellow jurists, friends and colleagues decided to honour his contribution through a collection of essays on a life dedicated to the advancement of international peace and justice through the rule of law. The contributions gathered here represent, in good measure, the values and beliefs in rule of law and human rights that have characterized Adama’s commitment to work towards a better Africa and a better world.

Book excerpt: Four Stories of Bandra, old and new We start in 1573, the year the Portuguese Jesuits came to Vandre (so called in those days), and effectively put it on the map. The next date is 1739, when the Maratha armies conquered Bacaim, Salcete - and Bandora -- and expelled the Portuguese from these parts forever. The year 1887 is our next milestone, Queen Victoria's jubilee year, when Bandra's native Catholics acquired a new name: "East Indian'. And so to the recent past, the 1963, where young Indians, newly independent, sought to make sense of their world. Four narratives, each seen through the eyes of a young man, the "Bandra Boy" of the title. What he sees, desires and becomes, is the grist of this narrative.
