Book excerpt: "What do you do when the world's most famous atheist mocks and insults you on international television, in universities, and throughout social media? You look to the Bible and see how Joseph was humiliated before the time came when God opened a big door of opportunity for him, and how Moses was abased before God opened a big sea for him. You take comfort in the Scriptures-in the knowledge that those who trusted God were often the object of ''cruel mockings,'' and in the principle of humiliation before promotion, of God taking someone low before raising them up for His use. And that's precisely what happened when Ray Comfort was christened ''Banana Man'' by Professor Richard Dawkins and then mocked worldwide by the atheist community. It was then that something strange and wonderful began to happen. Millions came under the sound of the everlasting gospel, all because of that humiliating name: Banana Man. So if you're afraid of looking foolish as a Christian, this true story not only will fascinate, delight, and encourage you, it will help you to see God's hand in your life and bring your own fears into perspective. Endorsement quotes: ''What an appealing story! Banana Man will show how you can bear sweet and lasting fruit in this often hostile world.'' -David and Jason Benham ''I can't eat a banana anymore without thinking of Ray.''"

Book The Magic Tower and Other One Act Plays

Download or read book The Magic Tower and Other One Act Plays written by Tennessee Williams and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wonderful collection of never-before-collected one-acts: “The peak of my virtuosity was in the one- act plays. Some of which are like firecrackers in a rope” (Tennessee Williams). Here are portraits of American life during the Great Depression and after, populated by a hopelessly hopeful chorus girl, a munitions manufacturer ensnared in a love triangle, a rural family that deals “justice” on its children, an overconfident mob dandy, a poor couple who quarrel to vanquish despair, a young “spinster” enthralled by the impulse of rebellion, and, in “The Magic Tower,” a passionate artist and his wife whose youth and optimism are not enough to protect their “dream marriage.” This new volume gathers some of Williams’s most exuberant early work and includes one-acts that he would later expand to powerful full-length dramas: “The Pretty Trap,” a cheerful take on The Glass Menagerie, and “Interior: Panic,” a stunning precursor to A Streetcar Named Desire. The plays include: • At Liberty • The Magic Tower • Me, Vashya • Curtains for the Gentleman • In Our Profession • Every Twenty Minutes • Honor the Living • The Case of the Crushed Petunias • Moony’s Kid Don’t Cry • The Dark Room • The Pretty Trap • Interior: Panic • Kingdom of Earth • I Never Get Dressed Till After Dark on Sundays • Some Problems for The Moose Lodge

Stefan is the dramatisation of a notorious miscarriage of justice in which Stefan Kiszko served 16 years in prison after he was wrongly convicted of the assault and murder of an eleven-year old girl. The protagonist is his mother Charlotte, a working class immigrant widow; she waged a one woman campaign to secure the freedom of her only son which eventually came about when it was forensically established that he could not have committed the offences. May Day New is a political satire, the events taking place in the period immediately before the May 1997 election of the first ‘New Labour’ administration under Tony Blair.La Mort De Roland is a one act play featuring three actors of whom only one is heard to speak, another responds inwardly while the third remains silent throughout. The dialogue is overlaid by an ambiguity that remains unresolved to the very end of the play. The Garden is a tragedy in which the protagonist, a traditional trades union official, is seen holding doggedly to his ideals in the face of the tide of changes swirling around him, and struggling at the same time to resolve inner contradictions. He is brought down by inflexibility and a single lapse.

Book Banana Cultures

  • Author : John Soluri
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2021-03-09
  • ISBN : 1477322825
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Banana Cultures written by John Soluri and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bananas, the most frequently consumed fresh fruit in the United States, have been linked to Miss Chiquita and Carmen Miranda, "banana republics," and Banana Republic clothing stores—everything from exotic kitsch, to Third World dictatorships, to middle-class fashion. But how did the rise in banana consumption in the United States affect the banana-growing regions of Central America? In this lively, interdisciplinary study, John Soluri integrates agroecology, anthropology, political economy, and history to trace the symbiotic growth of the export banana industry in Honduras and the consumer mass market in the United States. Beginning in the 1870s, when bananas first appeared in the U.S. marketplace, Soluri examines the tensions between the small-scale growers, who dominated the trade in the early years, and the shippers. He then shows how rising demand led to changes in production that resulted in the formation of major agribusinesses, spawned international migrations, and transformed great swaths of the Honduran environment into monocultures susceptible to plant disease epidemics that in turn changed Central American livelihoods. Soluri also looks at labor practices and workers' lives, changing gender roles on the banana plantations, the effects of pesticides on the Honduran environment and people, and the mass marketing of bananas to consumers in the United States. His multifaceted account of a century of banana production and consumption adds an important chapter to the history of Honduras, as well as to the larger history of globalization and its effects on rural peoples, local economies, and biodiversity.
