Book excerpt: Part 1 describes varied patterns of community cohesiveness and dispute resolution in the Philippines, including the development of a community-based system of informal and out-of-court dispute processing. Chapter 2 introduces the general topic of self-help and peacemaking practices in the Province of Lanao del Norte in Mindanao, and describes a number of peacemaking organizations. Chapter 3 describes one field trip to the southern Philippines, and some of the cultural elements that tend to promote community security, including barangay, or neighborhood organization, the absence of police, idle time, low technology, and the necessity of multiple personal follow-ups to finalize most transactions. Chapter 4 summarizes aspects of the conflict between Muslim and Christian peoples who live side by side in towns and cities of Mindanao. Chapter 4 looks at terrorist activities and how they affect the daily life of Filipinos in the north-western region of Mindanao. Chapter 6 details what is meant by vigilante activity in the Philippines and examines a number of such enterprises in the 1980's, with lingering presence in more recent years. Chapter 7 examines the almost omnipresent issue of bribery and extortion. Chapter 8 looks at youth, juvenile delinquency, street children, and some of the processes for managing Filipino delinquency. Chapter 9 explains aspects of the folkways in the Province of Lanao del Norte, where near-anarchy reigns, as shown by a lack of enthusiasm for the rule of law. Chaotic driving and queuing customs, among others, are discussed in light of their possible links to further styles of social deviance.

Download or read book Fresh Banana Leaves written by Jessica Hernandez, Ph.D. and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Indigenous environmental scientist breaks down why western conservationism isn't working--and offers Indigenous models informed by case studies, personal stories, and family histories that center the voices of Latin American women and land protectors. Despite the undeniable fact that Indigenous communities are among the most affected by climate devastation, Indigenous science is nowhere to be found in mainstream environmental policy or discourse. And while holistic land, water, and forest management practices born from millennia of Indigenous knowledge systems have much to teach all of us, Indigenous science has long been ignored, otherized, or perceived as "soft"--the product of a systematic, centuries-long campaign of racism, colonialism, extractive capitalism, and delegitimization. Here, Jessica Hernandez--Maya Ch'orti' and Zapotec environmental scientist and founder of environmental agency Piña Soul--introduces and contextualizes Indigenous environmental knowledge and proposes a vision of land stewardship that heals rather than displaces, that generates rather than destroys. She breaks down the failures of western-defined conservatism and shares alternatives, citing the restoration work of urban Indigenous people in Seattle; her family's fight against ecoterrorism in Latin America; and holistic land management approaches of Indigenous groups across the continent. Through case studies, historical overviews, and stories that center the voices and lived experiences of Indigenous Latin American women and land protectors, Hernandez makes the case that if we're to recover the health of our planet--for everyone--we need to stop the eco-colonialism ravaging Indigenous lands and restore our relationship with Earth to one of harmony and respect.

Download or read book La jurisprudence de l OMC The Case Law of the WTO 1996 1997 written by Brigitte Stern and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WTO, OMC, these abbreviations are now well known throughout the world and the organization contained in these three-letter acronyms has become a principal actor in international relations – economic and other. Everyone knows that a large part of its impact in the international society comes from a revolutionary mechanism of dispute settlement (DSM) that forms part of the World Trade Organization. More than 250 claims have been deposited in seven years, of which sixty led to a report of an ad hoc panel and the majority of those led to a report of the Appellate Body. This bilingual volume is the first in a series, which has the ambition to present the “jurisprudence” of this new mechanism, in a simple, coherent and systematic fashion. It is the result of intense cooperation between the two editors, and it is hoped to become a major reference work for all interested in the jurisprudence of the WTO and more general in the regulation of economic relations with respect to international commerce and all its multiple implications on daily matters.
Download or read book On the public role of the Bible in Zimbabwe written by Masiiwa Ragies Gunda and published by University of Bamberg Press. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Volume 18 of BiAS series is dedicated to critically unpack the meaning of the call to re-write the Bible made by the first President of Zimbabwe, Canaan S. Banana in 1991. In this book, the author engages with Banana's written works and makes critical observations regarding the call to re-write the Bible. This book argues that re-writing was proposed as a means to an end by Banana. It is demonstrated that what Banana intended was eradicating injustice, violence and inequality in the Middle East which was fuelled by the 'ideology of chosenness', which was sustained by a use of the Bible. Once it became clear the end was not re-writing the Bible, this work moved on to consider alternative means to achieving the same end. The search for alternatives leads the author to consider 'the way of Europe', that is, de-biblification or a watered down biblification, which is named partial de-biblification in this work. Finally, the author proposes a 'critical biblification' as a viable alternative to re-writing or de-biblification. This book, in honor of Banana, calls for socially and contextually relevant biblical studies"--

This book was released on 2002-10-08 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 1998 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, University of Tubingen (Law), language: English, abstract: The creation of the internal market within the European Community (EC) made it necessary to integrate the differing national arrangements that were still existing by 1993 with regard to a variety of goods. One of these Community-wide regimes adopted is the EC banana regime. It is one of the most disputed regimes so far1 An import tax of 20 was in force in the open, free market economies of the Benelux, Ireland and Denmark before the EC banana regime came into force. Only in Germany was no import tax levied because of the Banana Protocol of 25 March 1957. Bananas from ACP countries could be imported into all EC countries as a matter of principal tax free pursuant to Art. 168 of the Lomé Convention IV. After 5 years of negotiation2 the common market organization for bananas came into force on 1 July 1993. The legal basis is the Council Regulation (EEC) 404/933, a brief summary of which follows. Its regime discriminates against banana producers who are not based in the EC or in countries of the African, Caribbean or Pacific area (ACP), and against companies that distribute bananas that originate in those countries. At present imports of bananas from twelve previously determined traditional ACP countries enter the Community duty free, up to a maximum quantity fixed for each country in the regulation. Non-traditional ACP and third-country imports are subject to a tariff quota which lies well below the quantity these countries exported to the EC before the new banana regime was introduced with an import tax of 100 ECU per tonne. Furthermore, out of quota shipments are subject to a prohibitive duty, which renders importation uneconomical, that is 750 ECU per tonne for imports from ACP states and 850 ECU per tonne for third country bananas. Licensing requirements are applied to imports of traditional as well as non-traditional ACP- and third countries. As a result of these regulations, operators who traditionally marketed third country bananas have a competitive disadvantage over those who marketed Community bananas.4 Licenses for importation of bananas from non-traditional ACP and third countries are issued to three market sharing groups. Accordingly the earlier importers of these bananas only receive a quota of 66.5%. [...]
Download or read book The Promise of Multispecies Justice written by Sophie Chao and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the possibilities for multispecies justice? How do social justice struggles intersect with the lives of animals, plants, and other creatures? Leading thinkers in anthropology, geography, philosophy, speculative fiction, poetry, and contemporary art answer these questions from diverse grounded locations. In America, Indigenous peoples and prisoners are decolonizing multispecies relations in unceded territory and carceral landscapes. Small justices are emerging in Tanzanian markets, near banana plantations in the Philippines, and in abandoned buildings of Azerbaijan as people navigate relations with feral dogs, weeds, rats, and pesticides. Conflicts over rights of nature are intensifying in Colombia’s Amazon. Specters of justice are emerging in India, while children in Micronesia memorialize extinct bird species. Engaging with ideas about environmental justice, restorative justice, and other species of justice, The Promise of Multispecies Justice holds open the possibility of flourishing in multispecies worlds, present and to come. Download or read book Fair Trade and Social Justice written by Mark Moberg and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2008, total Fair Trade purchases in the developed world reached nearly $3 billion, a five-fold increase in four years. Consumers pay a “fair price” for Fair Trade items, which are meant to generate greater earnings for family farmers, cover the costs of production, and support socially just and environmentally sound practices. Yet constrained by existing markets and the entities that dominate them, Fair Trade often delivers material improvements for producers that are much more modest than the profound social transformations the movement claims to support. There has been scant real-world assessment of Fair Trade’s effectiveness. Drawing upon fine-grained anthropological studies of a variety of regions and commodity systems including Darjeeling tea, coffee, crafts, and cut flowers, the chapters in Fair Trade and Social Justice represent the first works to use ethnographic case studies to assess whether the Fair Trade Movement is actually achieving its goals. Download or read book Allies As Rivals written by Faruk Tabak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the dynamics of international rivalry from the late 1970s up through the present. Among the members of the dominant North political discord has become prominent recently in debates ranging from the Balkan Wars to the Second Gulf War. Yet a wide array of disputes--launching of global positioning systems to steel imports--have shattered the semblance of unity and cooperation among the members of the North, the triad of Europe, U.S., and east Asia. The book explores the subversive ways in which the configuration of economic networks in east Asia are subtly leaving their mark on the structure of the world-system. Also addressed are the ramifications on the South of this sharpening rivalry and, more importantly, whether this round of imperial rivalry will eventually give way, as previously in history, to new forms of international domination.

Download or read book The European Court and National Courts written by Anne Marie Slaughter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays comprising this volume are the outcome of a major and unique project which looks in detail at the application of EC law by national courts and the interaction of the demands of EC law with the constraints imposed by national legal orders and, especially, national constitutional orders. The volume comprises seven country studies which are shaped around a common research protocol. These are supplemented by three cross-cutting studies which draw on the country studies as well as on broader contextual research work aimed at trying to understand the role of the European Court of Justice in the round. The results of this multi-national research are certain to provoke widespread interest among scholars of European law, international law and European politics, for they offer the first systematic and rigorous attempt to assess the impact of the ECJ among the leading member states of the European Union.
