It has changed me forever. In 107 days, I journeyed in running shoes along the Baltic Sea from Stralsund to Tallinn. Travelling alone, I was able to devote myself completely to nature, the people and their cultures. Strangers became friends, expectation turned into reality, boldness into self-confidence. I experienced bustling holiday resorts and lonely areas. Enjoyable breaks in the towns and cities alternated with abstinent running days. I felt the mysticism of the Baltic States, the magic of untouched nature and the diversity of people in seven countries. I discovered what I was looking for: new experiences, peace and last but not least, a lot of new things about myself. Guido Lange had requested a 4-month sabattical to fulfil his longing to run – on and on. What could be more obvious than to run along the water into the bright, fresh Baltic summer, through Poland, the Kaliningrad Oblast, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to a marathon in Finland! 7 countries in 107 days, countless experiences and encounters in one of the most interesting regions of Europe. A travel book for everyone who has been to the Baltic States or wants to go there. An adventure book for all who'd like to pack their own bags and get out and go. Lewrie must take the Thermopylae into the Baltic in the dead of winter, alone and with no support, to scout the enemy fleets and iced-in harbours, deal with a fellow officer who is less of a friend than he thought, and be saddled with a pair of Russian noblemen as a last-minute peace delegation, but if the wily Foreign Office spy-master, Zachariah Twigg, sent them, what else might their mission be? All that and the Battle of Copenhagen, too, and it's broadsides at close quarters, and treachery for Lewrie, forcing him to use all his wiles to survive!
