Book Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems

Download or read book Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems written by Marion I. Newbigin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geographical Aspects of Balkan Problems: In Their Relation to the Great European War This little book is intended, as its title suggests, to summarize those geographical facts which made the Balkan Peninsula the potential storm-centre of Europe, for long years before the summer sky was rent by the lightning-flash which destroyed for ever the Old Europe, and changed in a moment all the familiar fabric of our daily life. The facts herein set forth do not seem to have been previously collected and correlated in an English book, and some of them are not easy of access. At the same time, there can be little doubt that an acquaintance with them, and with their political and social bearings, is of great importance in forming a judgment on desirable frontier changes in the region. Primarily, indeed, the book was begun with the desire to beguile for one non-combatant the gloom of the Winter of Waiting by the carrying through of a self-imposed task which gave at least the illusion of usefulness. Book Economic Crisis in Europe and the Balkans

Download or read book Economic Crisis in Europe and the Balkans written by Anastasios Karasavvoglou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economies of the European countries are still in recession, the development process is at a standstill, companies are facing financial difficulties, and the EU’s monetary policy is tight and focused on lowering inflation. The fiscal problems and high debt levels of the northern European countries are of great importance, and they are the consequences of both the European economy’s structural characteristics and the EU’s policies. The economic area of Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Black Sea countries is also vital, due to its special economic characteristics. The effects of the economic crisis on this particular area are catalytic, while the prospects for recovery are doubtful. The present book deals with the key aspects of the economic crisis in Europe, especially focusing on southeast Europe and the Balkans. The consequences of the crisis in these countries are analyzed and suggestions for how to address the crisis are outlined.

Book excerpt: This book shows how current and future research on the social history of the Balkans can be integrated into a broader European framework. The contributions look at a range of methodological and empirical issues, and the theme that links the various studies is that of the contrasting, yet, at the same time, entangled ideas of the Balkans as a "mental map" and of Southeast Europe as an "historical region." Book Balkan Family Structure and the European Pattern

Download or read book Balkan Family Structure and the European Pattern written by Maria N. Todorova and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, which is an updated, extended, and revised version of the out-of-print 1993 edition, reassesses the traditional stereotype of the place of the Balkans in the model of the European family in the nineteenth century on the basis of new source material and by synthesizing existing research. The work first analyzes family structure and demographic variables as they appear in population registers and other sources, and the impact of these findings on theoretical syntheses of the European family pattern. On most features, such as population structure, marriage and nuptiality, birth and fertility, death and mortality rates, family and household size and structure, as well as inheritance patterns, the Balkans show an enormous deal of internal variety. This variability is put in a comparative European context by matching the quantifiable results with comparable figures and patterns in other parts of Europe. The second section of the book is a contribution to the long-standing debate over the

Book Balkan Vital Graphics

Download or read book Balkan Vital Graphics written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2007 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental protection is one of the areas where the Balkan countries still face a big challenge to catch up with their western neighbors. After the 1990s conflicts and the breakup of Yugoslavia, six new Balkan states emerged. Apart from integrating environmental concerns into the new policies, a major challenge is environmental management across new borders. What used to be six international river basins in the Balkans have now evolved into 13 internationally shared river basins and four transboundary lake basins. The situation is similar for areas of high ecological value, many of which are often located in mountainous border areas. To ensure effective protection, entire ecosystems have to be addressed regardless of the political borders that are dividing them on a map. Transboundary cooperation between countries sharing one or more natural resources is therefore indispensable for creating common frameworks that promote their sustainable use while offering an opportunity for confidence-building between cooperating countries.

Book The Balkans and the Near East

Download or read book The Balkans and the Near East written by Karl Kaser and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Balkans and the Near East share millennia of a joint history, which stretches from the settling of man to the 20th century. The task split between the various scholarly disciplines into the fields of Balkan studies and Near (Middle) East studies has resulted in dividing a shared history into various sub-histories. This book reunites these isolated histories, opening up completely new historical perspectives. (Series: Studies on South East Europe - Vol. 12)
