Download or read book Judgmental Maps written by Trent Gillaspie and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sharp tongued and fierce witted full-color collection of maps of America’s greatest cities in all their brutally honest glory. Your City. Judged. When you move to a new city you look at a map to get you where you need to be, but a Google Map of San Francisco won’t tell you where you can get “Real Dim Sum” or where “The Worst Trader Joes Ever” is. Or if you’re visiting Chicago, you might want to see the Magnificent Mile, but not know it’s right next to where “Suburbanites Buy Drugs” and “Retired Mafioso.” This is where Judgmental Maps comes in – a no holds barred look at city life that is at once a love letter and hate mail from the very people who live there. What started as a joke between comedian Trent Gillaspie and his friends in Denver, quickly grew into a viral sensation with a rabid and enthusiastic community labeling maps of their cities with names and descriptions we all think of, but are a bit too shy to say out loud. Collected here in a full color, beautifully packaged book with all new, never before published material, Judgmental Maps is laugh out loud funny from New York to Los Angeles, Minneapolis to Atlanta and offending everyone else in between.

What if you didn't have to force students to read their college success textbook? The Snarktastic Guide to College Success takes an alternative approach as "the unvarnished, usually-said-behind-your-back truth about what really matters, straight from college students, alums, faculty, staff, and administrators." And that's exactly what you'll find. So go ahead, assign it - and marvel as students actually read it. This alternative approach to college success strategies focuses on presenting information in a different tone. In terms of information, this is the sort of advice that students used to have to get from older and wiser fellow students, from TAs feeling exceptionally generous one day after class, or from (horrors!) figuring it out themselves. The trouble with learning these lessons on your own is that by the time you figure it out, you've either nearly or already graduated. This book allows incoming students to 'figure it out' in time to put it to use. And the alternative tone -- the 'snark' in Snarktastic -- is what makes all that wholesome, mentally nutritious information go down easy, like the chocolate coating on a granola bar. The Snarktastic Guide to College Success recognizes most students respond well to a humorous, informed style, like the The Onion (http://www.theonion.com) of textbooks, if you will. Funny, irreverent, honest, and chock-full of useful stuff. It's all here, from choosing a seat on the first day of class to how paying attention to who's wearing backpacks can save a lot of grief. And that only scratches the snarky surface...! This Package Contains: · 0321947320/9780321947321: The Snarktastic Guide to College Success 1/e · 0321943252/9780321943255: MyStudentSuccessLab 2013 Update -- Value Pack Access Card

Download or read book Revitalizing America s Cities written by Michael H. Schill and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many American cities, middle and upper income people are moving into neighborhoods that had previously suffered disinvestment and decay. The new residents renovate housing, stimulate business, and contribute to the tax base. These benefits of neighborhood revitalization are, in some cases, achieved at a potentially serious cost: the displacement of existing neighborhood residents by eviction, condominium conversion, or as a result of rent increases. Revitalizing America's Cities investigates the reasons why the affluent move into revitalizing inner-city neighborhoods and the ways in which the new residents benefit the city. It also examines the resulting displaced households. Data are presented on displacement in nine revitalizing neighborhoods of five cities -- the most comprehensive survey of displaced households conducted to date. The study reveals characteristics of displaced households and hardships encountered as a result of being forced from their homes. Also featured is an examination of federal, state, and local policies toward neighborhood reinvestment and displacement, including various alternative approaches for dealing with this issue.

Her parents have just decided to uproot the family to the ritzy suburb of Brent Hills, Colorado, and now she's the only Black girl at a high school full of Barbies.
