If you like stories packed with ancient civilisations, mythological beasts and vengeful spirts, grab yourself a copy! Book 1 Centuries after King Solomon’s death, the djinn are still searching for the seal, a heavenly ring he used to subdue them. The djinn are dying, and now their fate lies in the hands of Roshan, a young woman unaware she can weave a new and dangerous magic. Can Roshan find the seal and save the djinn, or will her newfound magic doom them? Book 2 On a mission to Arshak, Roshan causes a terrible accident that allows High Magus Sassan to capture over thirty daevas. Meanwhile, Armaiti gives Sassan the one thing King Fiqitush most desires: Solomon’s seal. While Roshan struggles to control the sabaoth magic, Navid leaves for Arshak to learn what Sassan is up to with the daevas. What he discovers horrifies him and prompts a rescue mission. Aware they could be walking into a trap, Roshan, Navid and Behrouz sneak into Arshak. Can they free the prisoners, or will they become Sassan’s next victims? Book 3 High Magus Sassan and his army appear outside a sand-filled and crumbling Baka. If she’s going to help the djinn and daevas ready the city for war, Roshan must put aside her desire to take the fight to the high magus. Doing so, however, will leave her weak and vulnerable. Meanwhile, worried about Yesfir, Behrouz and Zana are desperate to rescue her. When ordered to remain in Baka, Zana goes in search of the Cross Scar manticores for help. As guardsmen and golems begin their attack on Baka, Roshan must make an impossible choice that will either save the djinn and daevas or doom Baka and its inhabitants to unending slavery.

Book Songs of the Baka and Other Discoveries

Download or read book Songs of the Baka and Other Discoveries written by Dennis James and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abandoning the comfort and security of a typical retirement, a couple travels and treks through the most isolated parts of the world. After their retirement, Dennis James and Barbara Grossman decide to travel where tour buses won’t and where the US government says “don’t,” incorporating trekking into their travels as a way to see untouched areas of the world considered inhospitable by many. Armed with a passport, an interest in non-Western and indigenous cultures, a spirit for adventure, and a sense of humor, they hike through the forests in the highlands of Papua New Guinea; visit the traditional hunter-gatherer Baka Pygmy community in Cameroon; stay with the cliff-dwelling Dogon people in Mali; explore Roman ruins in Algeria; meet a nervous mother rhino in Nepal; and witness bull-jumping, a coming-of-age ritual for young Hamer men in Ethiopia. In defiance of typical tourist travel, ignoring State Department warnings, and with a curiosity and hardiness that belies their ages, Dennis and Barbara choose to travel the roads not taken so frequently—to places like Cuba, Iran, Venezuela, and Gaza—seeking the truth behind the headlines and exploring the deeper questions about the local cultures they encounter. Why do these people cling to the art, sexual mores, economic and political hierarchies, and spiritualities that govern their lives? And how and why do they remain resistant to the pressures of globalization? A journey into the other sides of the world, Songs of the Baka and Other Discoveries puts aside preconceptions and combines the wisdom of age with the stamina of youth.

Book Summary of Dennis James s Songs of the Baka and Other Discoveries

Download or read book Summary of Dennis James s Songs of the Baka and Other Discoveries written by Everest Media and published by Everest Media LLC. This book was released on 2022-07-24T22:59:00Z with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was 76 years old and Barbara was 70 when we went trekking in Papua New Guinea. We were tired and covered in sweat, and we should have been sipping Pernod at Les Deux Magots café on the Boulevard Saint-Germain or wandering through the back streets of the Trastevere in Rome. #2 Papua New Guinea is a destination that is enticingly exotic but too difficult to get to and get around in. We put together a unique itinerary that involves three- to four-day treks in three zones of PNG, interspersed with one-day stays at Western-style hotels. #3 We spend thirty cramped hours in aluminum tubes, plus six or seven hours of layovers in sterile, sprawling airports. Our flight from LA to Brisbane is in almost total darkness as the plane races ahead of the sunrise. We fly through several time zones and cross the international dateline. #4 The Highlanders of New Guinea have never had contact with the outside world. They have lived in isolation for thirty thousand years, and they have developed their own language and culture.

Book The Forest People without a Forest

Download or read book The Forest People without a Forest written by Glory M. Lueong and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development interventions often generate contradictions around questions of who benefits from development and which communities are targeted for intervention. This book examines how the Baka, who live in Eastern Cameroon, assert forms of belonging in order to participate in development interventions, and how community life is shaped and reshaped through these interventions. Often referred to as ‘forest people’, the Baka have witnessed many recent development interventions that include competing and contradictory policies such as ‘civilize’, assimilate and integrate the Baka into ‘full citizenship’, conserve the forest and wildlife resources, and preserve indigenous cultures at the verge of extinction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests of Belonging examines the history and ongoing transformation of ethnic and social relationships among four distinct communities--Bangando, Baka, Bakwéle, and Mbomam--in the Lobéké forest region of southeastern Cameroon. By slotting forest communities into ecological categories such as "hunters" and "gatherers," previous analyses of social relationships in tropical forests have resulted in binary frameworks that render real-life relationships invisible and that have perpetuated correspondingly misleading labels, such as "pygmy." Through rich descriptive detail resulting from field work among the Bangando, Stephanie Rupp illustrates the complexity of social ties among groups and individuals, and their connections with the natural world. She demonstrates that social and ethno-ecological relations in equatorial African forests are nuanced, contested, and shifting, and that the intricacy of these links must be considered in the design and implementation of aid policies and strategies for conservation and development.
