Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1942 Jim Vernon, a nineteen-year-old student in Butte, Montana, joined the U.S. Navy’s aviation cadet training program. By the end of the war he was flying F6F Hellcats from the USS Ticonderoga against the Japanese mainland. This memoir provides a carrier pilot’s view of the conflict in the Pacific during the final months of the war when the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan capitulated. A member of VBF-87, Vernon gives a highly personal eyewitness account of life in a bomber-fighter squadron and the roller-coaster emotions involved in combat sorties over the hostile sea and land. He describes his feelings about meeting the challenges of war and offers stirring memories of his love of flying and the camaraderie of his flying mates—both in the air and on liberty. Added to this entertaining narrative are details of the mobilization and training of carrier pilots as well as a discussion of the high incidence of noncombat fatalities and the air group’s response to the kamikaze threat, information that contributes important dimensions to the overall story of the air war. Completely candid about his emotions regarding day and night landings and errors made in the cockpit, Vernon gives a vivid glimpse into the past at a time when teenagers matured rapidly as they faced the realities of war. His recollections will strike a cord of recognition with aviators everywhere and will inform and entertain those with an interest in World War II combat.

Book Negro with a Hat

Download or read book Negro with a Hat written by Colin Grant and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcus Mosiah Garvey was once the most famous black man on earth. A brilliant orator who electrified his audiences, he inspired thousands to join his "Back to Africa" movement, aiming to create an independent homeland through Pan-African emigration--yet he was barred from the continent by colonial powers. This self-educated, poetry-writing aesthete was a shrewd promoter whose use of pageantry fired the imagination of his followers. At the pinnacle of his fame in the early 1920s, Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association boasted millions of members in more than forty countries, and he was an influential champion of the Harlem Renaissance. J. Edgar Hoover was so alarmed by Garvey that he labored for years to prosecute him, finally using dubious charges for which Garvey served several years in an Atlanta prison. This biography restores Garvey to his place as one of the founders of black nationalism and a key figure of the 20th century.--From publisher description.

Book Where Are My Friends and Family

Download or read book Where Are My Friends and Family written by Michael Morgan and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-09-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a fictional-historical story about a young boy who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He lived with his family on a beautiful farm in Currituck, North Carolina. But in 1861, his state became the enemy of the United States, and the Yankee army was coming toward his farm. His father knew he had to protect his son from this war. His decision set his young son on a course that few men would ever travel. The son in this book is based on my great-grandfather, Patrick Henry Morgan. It is a story based on true historical events and is told by Patrick as he lived it. Patrick left his farm in 1862 to begin his schooling at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. His father pulled some strings to get him accepted. His father had lost five of his eleven children to disease, and he did not want his oldest to die in war. Patrick takes us through his time at VMI (1862-1864). Patrick discovers quickly that VMI is not for the faint of heart. He tells many stories about his time at VMI, some bad and some happy, but mostly funny. Patrick takes the reader through his part of the Battle of New Market. After the battle, the glory of the victory quickly faded as the realization that many of his friends had died or were wounded. He ended up in Richmond, digging defensive positions while waiting for the Yankees to attack. The Confederates surrendered at Richmond and his quest to get home. He and four other cadets with five dollars between them traveled 200 miles through Yankee-occupied territory to finally make it home. He helped his community and state by becoming a lawyer, a State Senator of North Carolina, a superintendent of the Lifesaving Service that became the United States Coast Guard in 1915, and much more. Patrick takes the reader along with him as he helps rebuild his state and tells the stories of meeting incredible men and women along with some famous people who changed the world. All based on true events and people with a few assumptions to make a good story.
