Book Study of Bacteriorhodopsin in a Controlled Lipid Environment

Download or read book Study of Bacteriorhodopsin in a Controlled Lipid Environment written by Vivien Yeh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the study of how the properties of nanodiscs, such as lipid composition and size, influence the function of the embedding integral membrane protein, bacteriorhodopsin. The author performed systematic studies to show that the lipid composition and the charge of the hydrophobic head and the structure of hydrophilic tails affect the photocycle pathway of bacteriorhodopsin, which is closely associated with its proton-pumping activity. Furthermore, the author demonstrated a highly efficient method for extracting membrane proteins directly from the biological membrane, preserving protein conformation, function and essential native lipids. This book demonstrates optimization and sample preparation, and presents practical methods of preparing membrane protein-embedded nanodisc samples for biophysical studies, which benefit structural and functional studies in the field of membrane protein characterization, both.

Book Bioinformatics second edition

Download or read book Bioinformatics second edition written by Pierre Baldi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-07-20 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to machine learning approaches and their application to the analysis of biological data. An unprecedented wealth of data is being generated by genome sequencing projects and other experimental efforts to determine the structure and function of biological molecules. The demands and opportunities for interpreting these data are expanding rapidly. Bioinformatics is the development and application of computer methods for management, analysis, interpretation, and prediction, as well as for the design of experiments. Machine learning approaches (e.g., neural networks, hidden Markov models, and belief networks) are ideally suited for areas where there is a lot of data but little theory, which is the situation in molecular biology. The goal in machine learning is to extract useful information from a body of data by building good probabilistic models—and to automate the process as much as possible. In this book Pierre Baldi and Søren Brunak present the key machine learning approaches and apply them to the computational problems encountered in the analysis of biological data. The book is aimed both at biologists and biochemists who need to understand new data-driven algorithms and at those with a primary background in physics, mathematics, statistics, or computer science who need to know more about applications in molecular biology. This new second edition contains expanded coverage of probabilistic graphical models and of the applications of neural networks, as well as a new chapter on microarrays and gene expression. The entire text has been extensively revised.

Book Thermodynamics of Membrane Receptors and Channels

Download or read book Thermodynamics of Membrane Receptors and Channels written by Meyer B. Jackson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-11-18 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamics of Membrane Receptors and Channels synthesizes a wealth of new information regarding the biophysics of membrane proteins. New insights provided by molecular genetics, single channel recording, and high resolution structural techniques are discussed from a conceptual perspective. Basic theoretical topics are introduced, developed, and then extensively illustrated with recent results from the literature or data from the authors' own laboratories. Theoretical and experimental information is incorporated into in-depth discussions of ion permeation mechanisms, ion channel and receptor conformational changes, aggregate activity of complexes of lipids and proteins, and how coupling is achieved between different energy modes in the many transduction systems residing in biomembranes. Thermodynamics of Membrane Receptors and Channels will be valuable both as a learning aid and a reference for biophysicists, neuroscientists, cell biologists, physiologists, and other researchers investigating any aspects of biomembranes.

Book Hydration Processes in Biology

Download or read book Hydration Processes in Biology written by Marie-Claire Bellissent-Funel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of water at organic surfaces or interfaces is of fundamental and technological interest and importance in chemistry, physics and biology. Progress towards an in-depth, molecular interpretation of the structure and dynamics of interfacial water needs a range of novel experimental and simulation techniques. We are now reaching the stage at which we understand, at the molecular level, the mutual perturbation at a macromolecule/water interface. The aims of this book are to provide with a comprehensive background to the properties of bulk water at the microscopic level and with a substantial account of the theoretical and experimental contributions which have been done to understand the role of water in various systems from some model systems to the more complex ones such as the biological systems.
