Book Getting Back in the Race

Download or read book Getting Back in the Race written by Joel R. Beeke and published by Cruciform Press. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is backsliding, really? Is it serious? What can be done about it? The Christian life is a race, a marathon. Through the gospel, God summons us to sustained and persevering effort. He empowers his children by grace--free and undeserved blessing through Christ. But he does not carry them to heaven on flowery beds of ease. Faith is a living, athletic grace. God's mercy motivates Christians and energizes them to press on and overcome great obstacles. Christ blazed the trail before us. He now calls us to follow Him to the end (Hebrews 12:1-2). Looking unto Jesus--that is how we persevere. In him is everything we need. But realistically speaking, Christians are not always pressing forward. Sometimes they wander off the narrow path, slip, and injure themselves. To the confused and injured runner, this book says, "God can help you. You can finish this race--and finish it well." Drawing from the wisdom of the Scriptures and aided by the insights of godly Bible teachers through the centuries, Getting Back in the Race addresses the age-old problem of backsliding. Backsliding is a season in the life of a professing Christian when his sin grows stronger and his obedience to God declines. The beginning of the book uncovers signs of sliding into a spiritual rut, for this is often more subtle than falling into scandalous sins. The rest of the book shows that there is hope for the backslider. God is so amazing! Even though our backsliding insults him, dishonors him, grieves him, and pushes away his love, still he calls us to return to him. When you grasp hold of God's methods by faith, you discover that Christ has grasped hold of you. Our spiritual Physician has potent medicines to heal his people from their injuries and get them back on track to finish the race. This book is a wake-up call to careless Christians and an encouragement to all believers to keep running to the Lord.

Book excerpt: Andy Konigsmark is more than an American Gladiator: he is a role model and the embodiment of what it means to stay focused on your dreams. He managed to overcome dyslexia, a bipolar disorder, and thrive as a true renaissance man. It is difficult to label Andy: he is a fitness model, an American Gladiator, and Ninja Warrior. He is a stand-up comedian, bartender, and a winner on the CBS Show Million Dollar Mile. Television audiences will recognize him for multiple performances, but his local community views him as their Presbyterian minister and bartender at the local watering hole. People told him he wouldn't become a comedian, he would never leave the Peach State, and did not possess the mental acumen to graduate high school. Despite these struggles, he continued to persevere. Much to his surprise, he received his Doctorate of Ministry from Fuller Seminary in 2018. Based out of Angel Fire, New Mexico, Andy keeps pursuing his dreams and leads a blissful family life, while also embracing a new path: writing. In his free time, he loves to snowboard, mountain bike, and hike. He loves to laugh with Dodi, his wife, perform science experiments with his daughter, Emmi Claire, and smash superheroes with his son, Crew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assaults on democracy are increasingly coming from the actions of duly elected governments, rather than coups. Backsliding examines the processes through which elected rulers weaken checks on executive power, curtail political and civil liberties, and undermine the integrity of the electoral system. Drawing on detailed case studies, including the United States and countries in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa, the book focuses on three, inter-related causal mechanisms: the pernicious effects of polarization; realignments of party systems that enable elected autocrats to gain legislative power; and the incremental nature of derogations, which divides oppositions and keeps them off balance. A concluding chapter looks at the international context of backsliding and the role of new technologies in these processes. An online appendix provides detailed accounts of backsliding in 16 countries, which can be found at www.cambridge.org/backsliding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising a prodigal is every Christian parent’s worst nightmare. Horrifyingly, George Barna contends that over 60 percent of Christian kids will run off to university and “lose their faith.” Some pollsters believe the number is as high as 80 percent. But there is great news! Your child doesn’t have to become a statistic. Your child can become an adult who loves the Lord the same way you do — but this will likely require a radical parenting reset on your part. Todd Friel has witnessed to hundreds of university students, most of whom are Bible-belt backsliders. Reset for Parents gets to the heart of the issue and presents a solid, biblical roadmap for parents to avoid the pain and heartache of raising a prodigal.

Book The Backslider in Heart

Download or read book The Backslider in Heart written by Charles Finney and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Classic book - The Backslider in Heart -- introduces and orients the reader to critical biblical/theological thinking from a biblical perspective. Finney's presentation is written with a clarity that fosters biblical thought and facilitates Bible comprehension. You won't be disappointed. While staunch Calvinists believed in the perseverance of the saints, Finney believed that a Christian could "backslide," or turn back from the Christian life and revert to a life of sin. In this address, Finney clarifies his theology of backsliding, first explaining what it is not, then what it is. He describes what a backslidden life might look like, and what consequences living in sin bring upon the sinner. Finney is consistently one of the best Bible scholars and this one is at the top of his writing. He's bold in his writings but solid in Scripture. "It's impossible to measure the influence of Finney over God's church. His works remain in print and are widely read, which shouldn't surprise us. He is considered one of the most outstanding pastoral, evangelistic writers on practical and devotional themes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Peeples, popular Florida surfer, who lives in the fast lane of fame, success, friends, and all the world can offer when it comes to women, drugs, alcohol and free will, soon learns that the world isn't all it is cracked up to be. The fast life he is living, and has become enslaved to through his backsliding sins, is destroying him and taking him to a slow but sure death. He has to lose everything he once thought was important - family, friends, and success - before he learns that those are not God's main purpose for his life or the reason he was put on this earth. When this adventure starts in the mountains of North Carolina, Kevin has no clue that it is a trip he was made for or that it is going to take him to “war”. God takes him into the wilderness to face all the giants of his life, Satan and all the evil forces that he has been enslaved to for over fifteen years. He is delivered and set free, but finds that the demonic warfare he was delivered from returns with even more powerful principalities of darkness to try to re-enslave him and take him down in the wilderness. He “loses” everything but “finds” the Lord and his presence, not only as a true Father, but as a best friend for life. God trains him to be a soldier in Christ, to stand up and win, and overcome all the Devil dishes out in a powerful supernatural battle. Victory comes when he believes and uses the resurrection power God places deep within his heart. This has been an intense journey, but now fully trained, Kevin is ready to train others that are lost and slaved to their backsliding sins. His mission is to help others who have no voice but are desperate for freedom from the enemy. Book excerpt: Join Greg Laurie, pastor and bestselling author of Steve McQueen: The Salvation of an American Icon, as he takes you on a personal journey into the life and legend of Johnny Cash. At the peak of his career, Cash had done it all—living the ultimate rags-to-riches story of growing up on a cotton farm in the Deep South to becoming a Nashville and Hollywood sensation, singing alongside heroes like Elvis Presley and performing for several American presidents. But through all of this, Cash was troubled. By the time he released the iconic Man in Black album in 1971, the middle-aged icon was broken down, hollow-eyed, and wrung out. In his search for peace, Cash became embroiled in controversy. He was arrested five times in seven years. His drug- and alcohol-induced escapades led to car accidents and a forest fire that devastated 508 acres. His time was divided between Jesus and jail, gospel tunes and the “Cocaine Blues.” But by the end of his life, Cash was speaking openly about his “unshakeable faith.” What caused the superstar to turn from his conflicting passions to embrace a life in Christ? Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon dives deep into the singer’s inner demons, triumphs, and gradual return to faith. Laurie interviews Cash’s family, friends, and business associates to reveal how the singer’s true success came through finding the only Person whose star was bigger than his own.

Download or read book The Backslider written by Levi S. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognized as a Mormon classic twenty years after its release,The Backslider features longstanding Christian conflicts played out in a scenic, sparsely populated area of southern Utah. A young ranch-hand, Frank Windham, conceives of God as an implacable enemy of human appetite. He is a dedicated sinner until family tragedy catapults him into an arcane form of penitence preached among frontier Mormons. He is saved by an epiphany that has proved controversial among readers, either interpreting it as an extreme impiety or celebrating it as a moving and entirely plausible rendering of a biblical theme in a Western setting. Frank comes into contact with a host of rural and urban characters. Of central importance is his Lutheran girlfriend, Marianne, whom Frank seduces, begrudgingly marries, and eventually loves. Frank's extended family is just a generation removed from polygamy and still energized by old-time grudges and deprivations. Along the way Frank encounters a closeted secular humanist, a polygamist prophet, a psychiatrist, a Mason, government employees, college professors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs--all drawn with heightened realism reminiscent of Charles Dickens or the grotesque forms of William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor. The story engages readers as it alternates almost imperceptibly between Frank's nave consciousness and the more informed awareness of its narrator. It can be read as a love story, a satiric comedy, or a dark and sobering study of self-mutilation. Shifting from one to another, it builds suspense and elicits complex emotions, among them a profound sense of compassion. More joyous than cynical, it sympathizes deeply with the plight of all of God's backsliders.

Book BACKSLIDING AND FALLING AWAY

Download or read book BACKSLIDING AND FALLING AWAY written by GODSWORD GODSWILL ONU and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word 'backslide' literally means to 'turn back' or 'turn away' from God, our first love, or the Word of God to satan, the world, the flesh, or evil. Backsliding is a sliding back. Though backsliding is not sudden in onset, it may escalate rapidly. Backsliding is different from falling away or apostasy, which is the extreme end of backsliding. Apostasy or falling away is the act or state of rejecting the Christian Faith and belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. But backsliding has to do with going into sin, getting lukewarm, leaving your first love, living in compromise and worldliness, and such things. It is a sliding back − a going back − from our former good state.
