This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of Czech and Slovak history traces the development of two neighboring peoples through the creation of a common Czechoslovakian state in 1918 to the founding of the independent Czech and Slovak Republics in 1993 and beyond. The History of the Czech Republic and Slovakia charts historical developments in the two nations to the opening decade of the 21st century. The book begins with an overview of the geography, climate, people, economy, and government of both the Czech and Slovak republics. Subsequent chapters offer a chronologically organized survey of historical events, trends, ideas, and people. Starting with the early Slavic settlements around the 5th century AD, the book explores Czech and Slovak history through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Early Modern eras, the Enlightenment, and the age of nationalism and revolution. Chapters on the 20th century include discussion of the World Wars, the interwar Czechoslovak state, the Communist decades, the Prague Spring, and the Velvet Revolution of 1989. The story is brought up to date with insights into developments in the independent Czech and Slovak republics since 1993.

Book excerpt: Cultural Studies: An Introduction to Global Awareness is designed to introduce students to the study of world affairs, regional studies, and cultural awareness. It delves into history, geography, religions, languages, cultures, political systems, economics, social issues, environmental concerns, and human rights. It looks at major events and significant figures that have shaped each region. In this age when the Internet, trade, airplanes, satellites, and cell phones connect people everywhere, it’s more important than ever to understand the world’s cultures. Even if you never leave the United States, you may find yourself working with or managing people from different parts of the world. If you end up working overseas, you’ll find that the more insight you have into other countries’ history and customs, the more successfully you’ll navigate your way around new and exciting lands. Features in this book include detailed topographical (mountains, rivers, etc.) and political maps. Colored boxes add brief additional information about related topics, while fastFacts offer extra tidbits of information. The photos provide glimpses of present-day life in these lands. Students will see how people dress and what their cities, cars, streets, buildings, and homes look like. While historical photos can be extremely interesting, this textbook supplies you with pictures of what these countries look like today. By the time students finish this course, they will have a greater understanding of the world around them. This knowledge will help them interpret trends and events abroad and will help in any future endeavors with other cultures.

Book Confronting Past Human Rights Violations

Download or read book Confronting Past Human Rights Violations written by Chandra Lekha Sriram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines what makes accountability for previous violations more or less possible for transitional regimes to achieve. It closely examines the other vital goals of such regimes against which accountability is often balanced. The options available are not simply prosecution or pardon, as the most heated polemics of the debate over transitional justice suggest, but a range of options from complete amnesty through truth commissions and lustration or purification to prosecutions. The question, then, is not whether or not accountability can be achieved, but what degree of accountability can be achieved by a given country. The focus of the book is on the politics of transition: what makes accountability more or less feasible and what strategies are deployed by regimes to achieve greater accountability (or alternatively, greater reform). The result is a more nuanced understanding of the different conditions and possibilities that countries face, and the lesson that there is no one-size-fits-all prescription that can be handed to transitional regimes.

Book A History of Czechoslovakia Between the Wars

Download or read book A History of Czechoslovakia Between the Wars written by Patrick Crowhurst and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, Patrick Crowhurst identifies the crucial political problem that faced Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1939 - the rift between the Czechs and the Sudeten Germans that would open the way for the rise of Konrad Henlein's right-wing 'Sudeten Deutsch' party, and which was exploited ruthlessly by Hitler during Nazi Germany's 1938 annexation of Czechoslovakia. A History of Czechoslovakia Between the Wars deepens our understanding of a fragile Europe before World War II, and is essential for students and scholars of 20th century history.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the History of Psychology Global Perspectives

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the History of Psychology Global Perspectives written by David B. Baker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-13 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science and practice of psychology has evolved around the world on different trajectories and timelines, yet with a convergence on the recognition of the need for a human science that can confront the challenges facing the world today. Few would argue that the standard narrative of the history of psychology has emphasized European and American traditions over others, but in today's global culture, there is a greater need in psychology for international understanding. This volume describes the historical development of psychology in countries throughout the world. Contributors provide narratives that examine the political and socioeconomic forces that have shaped their nations' psychologies. Each unique story adds another element to our understanding of the history of psychology. The chapters in this volume remind us that there are unique contexts and circumstances that influence the ways in which the science and practice of psychology are assimilated into our daily lives. Making these contexts and circumstances explicit through historical research and writing provides some promise of greater international insight, as well as a better understanding of the human condition.

Book Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in World Politics

Download or read book Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in World Politics written by Ladislav Cabada and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the description and analysis of the historical formation of the Czechoslovak and Czech positions in the international system during the course of the 20th century. The first part of the book presents a brief outline of the history of Czechoslovak foreign policy between the First World War and the end of the Cold War. The authors focus on the key periods and turning points in the role of the small Central European state in the international system as well as on the significant actors formulating Czechoslovak foreign policy from the inside and influencing it from the outside. The second, analytical part of the book focuses on the key issues connected to the change of the position of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic after 1993 in world politics, and on the formulation of Czech foreign policy priorities and strategies in the globalized world after the end of bipolar confrontation. The authors analytically investigate the activities of the Czech Republic in (Central) European regional integration processes and the integration of the state in the global system of development cooperation. A great deal of attention is paid to the key political actors of the Czech foreign policy discussion and their impact on the formulation of foreign policy goals. Special attention is paid to the dilemmas of Czech foreign policy: the hesitation between the role of a small state and a medium power and also the span of Czech foreign policy between Atlanticism, anti-Americanism and Europeanization.
