Book excerpt: Sandra Boynton and Michael Ford—the team behind Rhinoceros Tap, the Grammy-nominated #1 New York Times bestseller Philadelphia Chickens, and other toe-tapping book-and-CD sets—bring great words, great music, great performers to children and vintage children alike. Put a nickel in the jukebox, assuming you can locate a jukebox, and that you remember what a nickel is. Here's legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson singing lead and 10-part harmonies on "Speed Turtle." The incomparable Neil Sedaka crooning "Your Nose." B. B. King brings you a wistful "One Shoe Blues," Gerry and the Pacemakers offer "Mersey Lullaby," and Broadway great Patti LuPone sings—what else—the "Rabbit Tango." And then there's the hit single from Boynton's Your Personal Penguin sung by the impossibly cute Davy Jones of The Monkees. I mean jeepers, even Sha Na Na is here. And OH! The book! Boynton has filled it with all things 50s and 60s. And, well, golly, it’s so happy and colorful and just terrific, Mister! Grab your saddle shoes, plunk two straws into that swell chocolate malt, and let's twist again like we did last century. 119,000 copies in print.

Book excerpt: The linked stories in Cara Blue Adams’s precise and observant collection offer elegantly constructed glimpses of the life of Kate, a young woman from rural New England, moving between her childhood in the countryside of Vermont and her twenties and thirties in the northeast, southwest, and South in pursuit of a vocation, first as a research scientist and later as a writer. Place is a palpable presence: Boston in winter, Maine in summer, Virginia’s lush hillsides, the open New Mexico sky. Along the way, we meet Kate’s difficult bohemian mother and younger sister, her privileged college roommate, and the various men Kate dates as she struggles to define what she wants from the world on her own terms. Wryly funny and shot through with surprising flashes of anger, these smart, dreamy, searching stories show us a young woman grappling with social class, gender, ambition, violence, and the distance between longing and having.

Book excerpt: The great American educator Noah Webster first published A Grammatical Institute of the English Language, otherwise known as the Blue Back Speller, in 1783. His goal was to provide a uniquely American, Christ-centered approach to training children. Little did he know that this remarkable gem would become the staple for parents and educators for more than a century and would help to build the most literate nation in the history of the West. Book A Common Heritage

Download or read book A Common Heritage written by E. Jennifer Monaghan and published by Hamden, Conn. : Archon Books. This book was released on 1983 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: "This sets Webster's spelling book in an altogether different light. It was just a book that taught children how to spell (although of course it did that as well); it was the book that taught them to read. Although they may well have seen a primer at home, the speller was the first school text to instruct them in the art of reading. So the Webster spelling book, in its various forms, is of more importance to the history of American education than has formerly been appreciated. It deserves to be examined as the most popular reading instructional text of its day. A second purpose of this book, then, is to examine the spelling book on its own terms and in its own context. For Webster, of course, did not write his textbook in a vacuum. He had, it turns out, a useful model: a spelling book written by an Englishman, Thomas Dilworth, who titled his work A New Guide to the English Tongue. (Benjamin Franklin had been the first to produce an American edition, publishing it in 1747.) Webster himself learned to read from "Dilworth," as the work was affectionately known, and he would appropriate Dilworth's book for his own work."--page 14.

Book Blue

  • Author : Michel Pastoureau
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-03
  • ISBN : 9780691181363
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Blue written by Michel Pastoureau and published by . This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated visual and cultural history of the color blue throughout the ages Blue has had a long and topsy-turvy history in the Western world. The ancient Greeks scorned it as ugly and barbaric, but most Americans and Europeans now cite it as their favorite color. In this fascinating history, the renowned medievalist Michel Pastoureau traces the changing meanings of blue from its rare appearance in prehistoric art to its international ubiquity today. Any history of color is, above all, a social history. Pastoureau investigates how the ever-changing role of blue in society has been reflected in manuscripts, stained glass, heraldry, clothing, paintings, and popular culture. Beginning with the almost total absence of blue from ancient Western art and language, the story moves to medieval Europe. As people began to associate blue with the Virgin Mary, the color became a powerful element in church decoration and symbolism. Blue gained new favor as a royal color in the twelfth century and became a formidable political and military force during the French Revolution. As blue triumphed in the modern era, new shades were created and blue became the color of romance and the blues. Finally, Pastoureau follows blue into contemporary times, when military clothing gave way to the everyday uniform of blue jeans and blue became the universal and unifying color of the Earth as seen from space. Beautifully illustrated, Blue tells the intriguing story of our favorite color and the cultures that have hated it, loved it, and made it essential to some of our greatest works of art.
