This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Babylonian Boundary-Stones and Memorial-Tablets in the British Museum The present work contains thirty-seven texts from Babylonian Boundary-stones (kudurreti) and Memorial-tablets (nare), with translations, notes, and introduction; of these, twenty-five are published for the first time. They include the two earliest examples of this class of text now known, and four of the latest. The period covered by these texts extends from B.C. 1450 to B.C. 550, i.e., the whole period of Babylonian history during which Boundary-stones were employed for the protection of private property. In the series of texts here given, the following are of special interest, as they illustrate periods of history of which hitherto no contemporary records are known: 1. Text of the time of Kurigalzu, cut upon an ancient Boundary-stone, from which the original text had been erased; about B.C. 1400. 2. Text of the reign of Marduk-shapik-zer-mati, of the Fourth Dynasty of Babylon, about B.C. 1090. 3. Two texts drawn up in the reign of the usurper Adad-aplu-iddina, about B.C. 1080. 4. Text dated in the reign of Simmash-Shipak, about B.C. 1050, being the first known document of the Fifth Dynasty of Babylon. 5. Text of Itti-Marduk-balatu, a king hitherto unknown; his place will probably fall early in the Eighth Dynasty of Babylon, about B.C. 950. Other texts supply new and valuable records of the reigns of Enlil-nadin-aplu, about B.C. 1100, and Nabu-aplu-iddina, about B.C. 860. A very important difficulty in connection with early Kassite chronology is cleared up by another text, which proves that the Kassite monarch Kadashman-Kharbe, the father of Kurigalzu I, is not to be identified with Kadashman-Enlil, the correspondent of Amenophis III, as has been generally supposed. We now know that Kadashman-Kharbe and Kadashman-Enlil were two different kings, though both belonged to the Third Dynasty of Babylon. Yet another text, here published for the first time, settles definitively the values of the signs expressing the unit and its fractions and multiples in the Old Babylonian system of land-measurement. Finally, this series of texts throws a very considerable amount of light upon the Babylonian laws and customs which regulated land tenure and agricultural life. Of equal interest are the numerous symbols of the gods, which were engraved upon the Boundary-stones to protect them, as they are among the oldest examples of astral iconography we possess, and they have a very important bearing upon the age of Babylonian astronomy and the origin of the Zodiac. Hundley focuses on the official religions of the ancient Near East and explores the interface between the human and the divine within temple environs. Drawing on architectural and spatial theory, ritual theory, theories of language, art history, archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, and comparative studies, Hundley offers a single interpretive lens through which to view temple worship. Features: A close examination of temples in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Hittite Anatolia, and Syria-Palestine An interdisciplinary treatment of architecture, language, ritual, and art A dual focus on how a deity's divine presence connects to space and art and how human service to the deity maintains the deity's active presence

Book Kardunia Babylonia under the Kassites 1

This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karduniaš, as the kingdom of the Kassites in Babylonia was called in ancient times, was the neighbor and rival of great powers such as Egypt, the Hittites, and Assyria. But while our knowledge of the latter kingdoms has made huge progress in the last decades, the Kassites have until recently been largely ignored by modern scholarship. Recently a number of scholars have embarked on research into different aspects of Late Bronze Age Babylonia. The desire to share the results of these new investigations resulted in an international conference, which was held at Munich University in July 2011. The presentations given at this meeting have been revised for publication in the current volume. This book gives an overview of current research on the Kassites and is the first larger survey of their culture ever. An invaluable introduction by Kassite expert Professor John A. Brinkman is followed by seventeen specialist contributions investigating different aspects of the Kassites. These include detailed historical, social, cultural, archaeological, and art historical studies concerning the Kassites from their first arrival in Mesopotamia, during the period when a Kassite Dynasty ruled Babylonia (c. 1595-1155 BC), and in the subsequent aftermath. Concentrating on southern Mesopotamia the contributions also discuss Kassite relations and presence in neighboring regions. The book is completed by a substantial bibliography and a detailed index.

Book Ancient Knowledge Networks

Download or read book Ancient Knowledge Networks written by Eleanor Robson and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Knowledge Networks is a book about how knowledge travels, in minds and bodies as well as in writings. It explores the forms knowledge takes and the meanings it accrues, and how these meanings are shaped by the peoples who use it.Addressing the relationships between political power, family ties, religious commitments and literate scholarship in the ancient Middle East of the first millennium BC, Eleanor Robson focuses on two regions where cuneiform script was the predominant writing medium: Assyria in the north of modern-day Syria and Iraq, and Babylonia to the south of modern-day Baghdad. She investigates how networks of knowledge enabled cuneiform intellectual culture to endure and adapt over the course of five world empires until its eventual demise in the mid-first century BC. In doing so, she also studies Assyriological and historical method, both now and over the past two centuries, asking how the field has shaped and been shaped by the academic concerns and fashions of the day. Above all, Ancient Knowledge Networks is an experiment in writing about ‘Mesopotamian science’, as it has often been known, using geographical and social approaches to bring new insights into the intellectual history of the world’s first empires.
