Book The Charisma Machine

Download or read book The Charisma Machine written by Morgan G. Ames and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating examination of technological utopianism and its complicated consequences. In The Charisma Machine, Morgan Ames chronicles the life and legacy of the One Laptop per Child project and explains why—despite its failures—the same utopian visions that inspired OLPC still motivate other projects trying to use technology to “disrupt” education and development. Announced in 2005 by MIT Media Lab cofounder Nicholas Negroponte, One Laptop per Child promised to transform the lives of children across the Global South with a small, sturdy, and cheap laptop computer, powered by a hand crank. In reality, the project fell short in many ways—starting with the hand crank, which never materialized. Yet the project remained charismatic to many who were captivated by its claims of access to educational opportunities previously out of reach. Behind its promises, OLPC, like many technology projects that make similarly grand claims, had a fundamentally flawed vision of who the computer was made for and what role technology should play in learning. Drawing on fifty years of history and a seven-month study of a model OLPC project in Paraguay, Ames reveals that the laptops were not only frustrating to use, easy to break, and hard to repair, they were designed for “technically precocious boys”—idealized younger versions of the developers themselves—rather than the children who were actually using them. The Charisma Machine offers a cautionary tale about the allure of technology hype and the problems that result when utopian dreams drive technology development.

Book Gelato Fiasco

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua Davis
  • Publisher : Down East Books
  • Release : 2018-09-07
  • ISBN : 1608939979
  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Gelato Fiasco written by Joshua Davis and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joshua Davis and Bruno Tropeano, two guys right out of college, felt that something was amiss. People in Maine created some of the best of everything in the world — higher education, ships, television doctors, winter boots. But the gelato of which they dreamt could not be found here in Maine, or anywhere else in the United States. Josh and Bruno sensed both a responsibility and an opportunity and set off to rediscover the lost art. Imagining a long-forgotten Red Spoon Society of superior gelato artisans, they learned the techniques and practices of the old masters of gelato. They used those techniques as a foundation for creating an even better gelato experience: make lots of creative flavors for discerning guests, serve them in a way that invites discovery and delight, and never compromise on quality. In 2007, the doors to their first gelato store opened. Josh and Bruno named it Gelato Fiasco as a hedge against trend-pursuers, treasure hunters, and impostors, for only a true food lover, guided by his or her own sense of adventure, would dare enter a store with that name. And as they loved it, they would share with their families and friends, who would share with theirs. Gelato Fiasco is a book brimming with humor, Maine values, mouth-watering color photographs, and, most importantly, delicious recipes (out of 1500 in the “flavor vault” the book will include 100 or so) for making your own gelato at home, plus recipes sauces, cones, and other treats to enjoy with your gelato.

Book excerpt: About the Book As an educator at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), author Dr. Ben Robertson Jr. is appalled by the severe lack of information in books used in human behavior classes in the social environment, and it spurred him to write this fascinating book. A Psychosocial Analysis of Life in America for Afrikan Americans is designed to portray a truer picture of the challenges, shortcomings, and successes Afrikan Americans have encountered throughout their lives in America. It’s both a historical account of what Afrikan Americans have gone through as well as thoughtful, pivotal instructions and suggestions directed toward the Afrikan American community with respect to making important improvements in the lives of its members. About the Author For the past fifty-plus years, Dr. Ben "Menes" Robertson has been involved in activities centered around empowering members of urban Afrikan American communities; this includes his work in public and private schools, teaching at HBCUs, and assisting public officials to improve the life conditions and chances of success of every man, woman, and child living in those communities. Every article he has written, workbook he has developed, and program restructuring he has implemented has been designed to empower the urban Afrikan American community to do what it can do for themselves as residents as well as through coordinated efforts towards improvements with other concerned persons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is a work of fiction. The main characters are pure inventions and imaginations of the author. It has no relations to anyone dead or alive as far as I know. The two countries and continent, which the novel is based on, are genuineUnited Kingdom, Nigeria and Africa. I lived in UK, while researching and writing this novel, so I relied on memories that were good, bad, ugly, travels, events, experiences from friends, families, neighbors, and many peoples accounts of natural, cultural, and social history of Africans and Nigerians in United Kingdom in the sixties through to todays UK. Such are the diversity and values of these sources to-me and other interested people who may be willing to know the facts underpinning the writing of this fiction. This work of fiction has a lot of raunchy, romantic and sexual scenes, which is based on experiences of young women, who arrived in UK and disapprovingly but, rather shockingly find out that UK is not exactly a county covered in milk and honey, but, rather it can be as daunting and has snapshots of vices as can be found in any other cosmopolitan town.
