Download or read book Children Spaces and Identity written by Margarita Sánchez Romero and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do children construct, negotiate and organize space? The study of social space in any human group is fraught with limitations, and to these we must add the further limits involved in the study of childhood. Here specialists from archaeology, history, literature, architecture, didactics, museology and anthropology build a body of theoretical and methodological approaches about how space is articulated and organized around children and how this disposition affects the creation and maintenance of social identities. Children are considered as the main actors in historic dynamics of social change, from prehistory to the present day. Notions on space, childhood and the construction of both the individual and the group identity of children are considered as a prelude to papers that focus on analyzing and identifying the spaces which contribute to the construction of children’s identity during their lives: the places they live, learn, socialize and play. A final section deals with these same aspects, but focuses on funerary contexts, in which children may lose their capacity to influence events, as it is adults who establish burial strategies and practices. In each case authors ask questions such as: how do adults construct spaces for children? How do children manage their own spaces? How do people (adults and children) build (invisible and/or physical) boundaries and spaces?

Download or read book The Management of Common Property Natural Resources written by Daniel W. Bromley and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1989 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular technical paper is currently in its sixth reprinting (10/97). Many development projects require that people be involuntarily resettled to other locations to live and work. Governments need adequate policies to minimize the negative effects of this relocation both on the individuals involved and on the national economy. This report presents policy guidelines and procedures for World Bank-financed projects requiring involuntary resettlement. Designed for development specialists, social anthropologists, and sociologists, this volume discusses past Bank projects to illuminate the responsibilities of the governments and the needs of resettlers and host populations during resettlement. Among the topics addressed are types of involuntary resettlement; basic sociological principles in approaching resettlement; policy objectives and strategies; reconstruction of the resettlers' homes, production bases, and social organizations; and the effects of resettlement on the environment. Annexes to this report contain technical checklists for preparing and appraising resettlement plans in projects and for monitoring and evaluating rettlement. Michael M. Cernea has published and editied several books on the sociological aspects of development. Among these books is Putting People First: Sociological Variables in Rural Development , which describes culturally sensitive approaches to the preparation, planning, and implementation of development projects. Other books include Social Organization and Development Anthropology; Social Assessments for Better Development: Case Studies in Russia and Central Asia ; and Urban Environment and Population Relocation .
Download or read book Ecuador s Amazon Region written by James F. Hicks and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a broad analysis of the Amazon region within the framework of Ecuador's national economic development. This approach is based on the observation that isolated policy analyses that focus narrowly on a region of concern generally result in policies that are 1) wrong from a national development perspective and or 2) ignored, unless the region in question has decisive political influence. The Amazon region presents some very special characteristics, some of which may be considered constraints, others unique opportunities. The foremost characteristic that conditions the range of options for this region is the extreme fragility of the region's natural resources. It also offers unique biological diversity. This potential may remain unknown and lost forever if the tropical rainforest is permanently destroyed through inappropriate land use. The report will aslo examine the area's development issues and policy options.
Download or read book How Adjustment Programs Can Help the Poor written by Helena Ribe and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience has proven that an orderly adjustment process designed to establish a new equilibrium growth path is indispensible for improving the longer-term position of the poor. Some adjustment measures can affect the poor adversely. The most common way of addressing the adverse impact of adjustment has been the implementation of targeted compensatory programs. Such programs can compensate those affected directly by adjustment or provide temporary employment or relief to the chronically poor. Changes in the design of adjustment programs can promote the longer-run interest of the poor, but have received relatively little attention. Appropriate design changes can help to foster pro-poor growth and enable reallocations of public expenditures in ways that support, or improve the efficiency of, programs that help the poor to take advantage of the emerging economic opportunities. Finally, appropriate design changes can target subsidies more effectively. Subsidies that have a large impact on the incomes of the poor, should not be reduced or eliminated unless alternative means of reaching the poor are introduced.
Download or read book Subsidies and Countervailing Measures written by Bela Balassa and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsidies in international trade come under Articles VI, XVI and XXIII of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The developed countries, but not the developing countries, subscribed to a provision in the GATT that prohibits export subsidies to products other than primary products. The prohibition did not lead to the disappearance of export subsidies. The general dissatisfaction with the application of subsidies and countervailing measures has lead to the framework of the Uruguay Round of negotiations. This paper aims to provide assistance to the negotiators in the performance of their task. The five papers included here offer suggestions and discussion on subsidies and countervailing measures, protectionism, and dumping.

Download or read book Staying in the Loop written by Ashoka Mody and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firms in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries have formed a large number of alliances to share technology. An analysis of these alliances provides theoretical insights into the growth of firms and the evolution of the product cycle. Additionally, it leads to a better understanding of the changing international technology market and the implications of these changes for developing countries. In technologically dynamic industries, open international standards provide a cheap source of technology. Developing country firms could also exploit mutually beneficial linkages to obtain technology by manufacturing products designed by industrial country firms. As the case studies in the paper indicate, however, such arrangements lead to genuine technology transfer only when the developing country firm has a strong absorptive capability. Moreover, firms in developed countries will not always be willing to enter into such arrangements if the transfer of technology creates potential competitors. This paper presents evidence showing that firms increasingly are holding on to critical process technologies. These process technologies are important not only for high technology products, but also for many mature products.
