Book excerpt: With climate change in the news, an urban core that has reached boiling point, and many children growing up without role models and with limited dreams, where is hope? There is a quiet experiment in Milwaukee that is turning heads. It starts with the simplicity of getting a city kid exploring their neighborhood park. How is it that so much life, community, and opportunity can grow from this unlikely soil? It's been called a miracle. It's contagious. It's spreading. It's exciting. And it works! This is the story of a group of ordinary people in a neighborhood who created something extraordinary. Readers will discover... the power of getting a city kid outside in nature; that kindness does work; how to say no while following the yes; the value of clarity and focus; how to find abundance within their own diverse community by simply and humbly asking for help; ten tried and tested rules for raising money (a lot of it!) while having a ton of fun doing it; a positive, believable, and very real vision for the future of the environment (we've got this!); and... how to join the Urban Ecology movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents qualitative research narratives on children’s engagement and learning in play and arts experiences. Using The Artground Singapore - a registered arts charity that offers interactive visual art spaces for children - as a site of study, the book also offers reflective and practical insights into the professional development and incubation of art practitioners dedicated to the creation and implementation of works for young audiences. With reference to other such purpose-built arts spaces specifically dedicated to the engagement and learning of young audiences through play and varied arts experiences, such as The Ark in Dublin and ArtPlay in Melbourne, the authors show how these spaces are also dedicated to the development and creation of new quality works for young audiences through various professional development programmes. The Artground Singapore was developed along similar lines of interest, and provides a dedicated arts space for children and their caretakers to explore, play and create together through its interactive visual arts play space, as well as arts programmes that include music, theatre and dance, amongst others. Sharing critical insights into the aesthetical, logistical, and management aspects of providing a dedicated arts space for children, this book will be of interest to arts practitioners, child educators, and cultural studies scholars interested in dance, drama and music performance and pedagogy.

Book The Ecology of Childhood

Download or read book The Ecology of Childhood written by Barbara Bennett Woodhouse and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Magazine How globalization is undermining sustainable social environments for children This book uses the ecological model of child development together with ethnographic and comparative studies of two small villages, in Italy and the United States, as its framework for examining the well-being of children in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Global forces, far from being distant and abstract, are revealed as wreaking havoc in children’s environments even in economically advanced countries. Falling birth rates, deteriorating labor conditions, fraying safety nets, rising rates of child poverty, and a surge in racism and populism in Europe and the United States are explored in the petri dish of the village. Globalism’s discontents—unrestrained capitalism and technological change, rising inequality, mass migration, and the juggernaut of climate change—are rapidly destabilizing and degrading the social and physical environments necessary to our collective survival and well-being. This crisis demands a radical restructuring of our macrosystemic value systems. Woodhouse proposes an ecogenerist theory that asks whether our policies and politics foster environments in which children and families can flourish. It proposes, as a benchmark, the family-supportive human-rights principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The book closes by highlighting ways in which individuals can engage at the local and regional levels in creating more just and sustainable worlds that are truly fit for children.

At the same time, she shows all the hazards that we are now allowing to threaten each precious stage of development, including the breast-feeding relationship between mothers and their newborns. In the eyes of an ecologist, the mother's body is the first environment, the mediator between the toxins in our food, water, and air and her unborn child.Never before has the metamorphosis of a few cells into a baby seemed so astonishingly vivid, and never before has the threat of environmental pollution to conception, pregnancy, and even to the safety of breast milk been revealed with such clarity and urgency. In Having Faith, poetry and science combine in a passionate call to action.A Merloyd Lawrence Book
