Book A Grammar of Modern Baba Malay

Download or read book A Grammar of Modern Baba Malay written by Nala H. Lee and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents modern Baba Malay, a critically endangered Austronesian-based contact language with a Sinitic substrate. Formed via intermarriage between Hokkien-speaking male traders and indigenous women in the Malay Peninsula, the language has less than 1,000 speakers in Singapore and less than 1,000 speakers in Malacca, Malaysia. This volume fills a gap for reference grammars of contact languages in general. Reference grammars written on contact languages are rare, and much rarer is a reference grammar written about a critically endangered Austronesian-based contact language. The reference grammar, which aims to be useful to linguists and general readers interested in Baba Malay, describes the language’s sociohistorical background, its circumstances of endangerment, and provides information regarding the phonology, parts of speech, and syntax of Baba Malay as spoken in Singapore. A chapter that differentiates this variety from that spoken in Malacca is also included. The grammar demonstrates that the nature of Baba Malay is highly systematic, and not altogether simple, providing structural information for those who are interested in the typology of contact languages.

Book Chrita Chrita Baba

Download or read book Chrita Chrita Baba written by Kenneth Y. K. Chan and published by Wolf et al. This book was released on 2019-10-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chrita-Chrita Baba, which means Baba Stories in the Peranakan language, is a collection of short stories, written in both Baba Malay and English presented side-by-side on facing pages. The tales draw from Southeast Asian folklore, fea- turing both adaptations of familiar fairytales with a twist, and elements from local customs, traditions, and beliefs. All sto- ries, as with most folk tales of the past, revolve around the teaching of a moral lesson. Chrita-Chrita Baba is the spiritual successor to the Chrita Dulukala, the last collection of stories translated into Baba Malay in the early 1900s by the Peranakan Chinese. However, while those were faithful transla- tions of Chinese classics for the enjoyment of the non-Chinese speaking Baba Nyonya community, this book features both adaptations of old Nusantara folk tales and original stories for the enjoyment of the contemporary reader. The book was written in response to the Baba language being listed as anendangered language with fewer than 1000 fluent speakers inSingapore. With recent Baba language revitalisation efforts by the Peranakan community, new learners of the language will now have something to read and look forward to. The book will also be enjoyed by those who are interested in Peranakan culture, heritage languages, and local folklore.

Before theyre outcast, let us track back the history of Malays civilization. Most of them do not know much about their origin. Some may think that they originate from the Javanese or Bugis of Indonesia or from Yemen, the descendants of Arab traders, or some from Thailand, especially those from the northern states. Malays generally are peace-loving people. They respect the elderly and vice versa. They have high regards for the elites and the royals. They are patience, faithful, and law abiding. Nevertheless, they are the sleeping tigers if provoked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring a rich array of Malay texts from novels and newspapers to poems and plays, Tom G. Hoogervorst's Language Ungoverned examines how the Malay of the Chinese-Indonesian community defied linguistic and political governance under Dutch colonial rule, offering a fresh perspective on the subversive role of language in colonial power relations. As a liminal colonial population, the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia resorted to the press for their education, legal and medical advice, conflict resolution, and entertainment. Hoogervorst deftly depicts how the linguistic choices made by these print entrepreneurs brought Chinese-inflected Malay to the fore as the language of popular culture and everyday life, subverting the official Malay of the Dutch authorities. Through his readings of Sino-Malay print culture published between the 1910s and 1940s, Hoogervorst highlights the inherent value of this vernacular Malay as a language of the people.

Book Creoles Their Substrates and Language Typology

Download or read book Creoles Their Substrates and Language Typology written by Claire Lefebvre and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since creole languages draw their properties from both their substrate and superstrate sources, the typological classification of creoles has long been a major issue for creolists, typologists, and linguists in general. Several contradictory proposals have been put forward in the literature. For example, creole languages typologically pair with their superstrate languages (Chaudenson 2003), with their substrate languages (Lefebvre 1998), or even, creole languages are alike (Bickerton 1984) such that they constitute a definable typological class (McWhorter 1998). This book contains 25 chapters bearing on detailed comparisons of some 30 creoles and their substrate languages. As the substrate languages of these creoles are typologically different, the detailed investigation of substrate features in the creoles leads to a particular answer to the question of how creoles should be classified typologically. The bulk of the data show that creoles reproduce the typological features of their substrate languages. This argues that creoles cannot be claimed to constitute a definable typological class."
