Book Axisymmetric Interaction of a Blast Wave with the Shock Layer of a High speed Blunt Body

Download or read book Axisymmetric Interaction of a Blast Wave with the Shock Layer of a High speed Blunt Body written by William McNamara and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finite-difference method is developed for treating the interactions of a blast wave and the shock layer in the nose region of a high-speed blunt body. The body may be of any blunt shape which can be represented by a connected series of straight-line segments. The investigation is restricted to head-on axisymmetric interactions in the blunted nose region. The numerical procedure is based upon an acoustic modification of the finite-difference method of Godunov, and employs a floating Eulerian mesh which is attached to the bow shock and to the body. The mesh is periodically realigned to follow, in a Lagrangian fashion, the primary contact surface resulting from the blast-wave bow-shock interaction. Comparisons with steady-state solutions show an accuracy of better than 5 percent, and comparisons with some preliminary experimental data suggest an agreement of better than 25 percent for interaction calculations. It is concluded that the numerical code could be extended to more downstream regions of the body, and for greater usefulness should include real-gas effects. (Author).

Book Shock Interaction Surface Pressures for Hemispherical and Conical Bodies

Download or read book Shock Interaction Surface Pressures for Hemispherical and Conical Bodies written by Frank P. Baltakis and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transient pressures, induced by wind-tunnel simulated head-on blast wave interactions, have been measured on a hemisphere and on cones of 9-, 15- and 30-degree semivertex angles. Blast wave Mach numbers of 1.6 to 2.2, 2.2 to 5.85 and 2.7 to 4.4 were simulated at the free-stream Mach numbers of 3.1, 5.1 and 7, respectively. Measured pressure-time histories for the hemisphere were compared and found in agreement with histories predicted by McNamara's FLAME code. Peak overpressures for the cones were tested for agreement with values predicted by a simple theoretical method in which an assumption is made that the blast wave forms a Mach stem moving along the surface at a velocity whose axial component equals the velocity of the main blast wave. The effects of angle of attack and of nose blunting were also investigated with the nine-degree cone at a free-stream Mach number of 5.1. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an editor of the international scienti?c journal Shock Waves, I was asked whether I might document some of my experience and knowledge in the ?eld of blast waves. I began an outline for a book on the basis of a short course that I had been teaching for several years. I added to the outline, ?lling in details and including recent devel- ments, especially in the subjects of height of burst curves and nonideal explosives. At a recent meeting of the International Symposium on the Interaction of Shock Waves, I was asked to write the book I had said I was working on. As a senior advisor to a group working on computational ?uid dynamics, I found that I was repeating many useful rules and conservation laws as new people came into the group. The transfer of knowledge was hit and miss as questions arose during the normal work day. Although I had developed a short course on blast waves, it was not practical to teach the full course every time a new member was added to the group. This was suf?cient incentive for me to undertake the writing of this book. I cut my work schedule to part time for two years while writing the book. This allowed me to remain heavily involved in ongoing and leading edge work in hydrodynamics while documenting this somewhat historical perspective on blast waves.

Book A Method for Calculating the Interaction of a Bow Shock of a Re entry Vehicle and a Blast Wave

Download or read book A Method for Calculating the Interaction of a Bow Shock of a Re entry Vehicle and a Blast Wave written by Thomas D. Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general technique for computing the transient flow field in the nose region of a blunt body traveling at hypersonic speeds after being intercepted head-on by a shock wave is presented. The method is not limited to the assumption that the density, pressure and velocities are constant in the interaction region which has been the assumption in previous investigations of this problem. The technique can be applied to compute the flow in the entire interaction region, but is discussed here for computing the low near the axis of symmetry. (Author).

  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Blast Effects written by Isabelle Sochet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles a variety of experimental data on blast waves. The book begins with an introductory chapter and proceeds to the topic of blast wave phenomenology, with a discussion on Rankine-Hugoniot equations and the Friedlander equation, used to describe the pressure-time history of a blast wave. Additional topics include arrival time measurement, the initiation of detonation by exploding wires, a discussion of TNT equivalency, and small scale experiments. Gaseous and high explosive detonations are covered as well. The topics and experiments covered were chosen based on the comparison of used scale sizes, from small to large. Each characteristic parameter of blast waves is analyzed and expressed versus scaled distance in terms of energy and mass. Finally, the appendix compiles a number of polynomial laws that will prove indispensable for engineers and researchers.
