Book excerpt: Slavoj Žižek, a leading intellectual in the new social movements that are sweeping Eastern Europe, provides a virtuoso reading of Jacques Lacan. Žižek inverts current pedagogical strategies to explain the difficult philosophical underpinnings of the French theoretician and practician who revolutionized our view of psychoanalysis. He approaches Lacan through the motifs and works of contemporary popular culture, from Hitchcock's Vertigo to Stephen King's Pet Sematary, from McCullough's An Indecent Obsession to Romero's Return of the Living Dead—a strategy of "looking awry" that recalls the exhilarating and vital experience of Lacan. Žižek discovers fundamental Lacanian categories the triad Imaginary/Symbolic/Real, the object small a, the opposition of drive and desire, the split subject—at work in horror fiction, in detective thrillers, in romances, in the mass media's perception of ecological crisis, and, above all, in Alfred Hitchcock's films. The playfulness of Žižek's text, however, is entirely different from that associated with the deconstructive approach made famous by Derrida. By clarifying what Lacan is saying as well as what he is not saying, Žižek is uniquely able to distinguish Lacan from the poststructuralists who so often claim him.

  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Laughing Awry written by Erik Gunderson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laughing Awry offers a comprehensive overview of key themes in the interpretation of the plays of Plautus, and explores the connections between deception, desire, slavery, genre, and audience. In doing so, it offers an account of the mechanisms of Plautus' humour and the uncomfortable origins of laughter, revealing how his dramas do not just play to but also work on the audience. The volume examines the whole corpus of Plautine plays, providing longer accounts of selected dramas and choice scenes. An emphasis on methodological and theoretical questions is maintained throughout, and particular attention is paid to the psychic life of humour and its relationship to questions of social power. Chapters discuss, among other topics, the problem of writing about humour, Plautus' reception by subsequent Roman authors, the plays' embedded social theory, the intersection of circuits of desire, laughter as a scandalous surfeit, and the sublime perversity of laughter. The volume asks what we are laughing at, why we laugh, and what this laughter means.

Book excerpt: The Fifth in the Romance Series featuring African American Couples Spring and Bilal Part 2 of 2 Spring's personal life has never gone according to plan. Certainly so when it came to Bilal. She didn't plan to be more than friends with him. She didn't plan to fall in love with him. She didn't plan to find out she was pregnant after he'd broken her heart. She certainly didn't plan to forgive him (for now) and take him back afterward with the promise of starting over and taking things slow. So much for taking things slow though when due to circumstances out both their control, Bilal ends up temporarily staying with Spring and she starts to wonder just how "slow" Bilal really wants to take things when he seems to be making permanent plans for them that go beyond fixing up a space for the baby. But heartwarming as all that is, Spring can't get him to tell her why he won't tell his family that she's pregnant or why he still refuses to go public about their relationship at all. And rather than planning a happily ever after, Spring feels like if she can't get him to be honest about all that and why he broke up with her the first time, they're doomed for another more permanent breakup instead.

Book Good Intentions Gone Awry

Download or read book Good Intentions Gone Awry written by Jan Hare and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emma Crosby's letters to family and friends in Ontario shed light on a critical era and bear witness to the contribution of missionary wives. They mirror the hardships and isolation she faced as well as her assumptions about the supremacy of Euro-Canadian society and of Christianity. They speak to her "good intentions" and to the factors that caused them to "go awry." The authors critically represent Emma's sincere convictions towards mission work and the running of the Crosby Girls' Home (later to become a residential school), while at the same time exposing them as a product of the times in which she lived. They also examine the roles of Native and mixed-race intermediaries who made possible the feats attributed to Thomas Crosby as a heroic male missionary persevering on his own against tremendous odds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on sociological and economic analysis, Good Intentions Gone Awry presents valuable new insights into the impact of divorce on American society. Rather than blaming the deterioration in the quality of family life on the decline in so-called "family values," lawyer and economist Parkman argues that adults are responding to the incentives created by new opportunities and legal rules. Allen M. Parkman discusses the issues surrounding this sociological phenomena, proposes a reform program in response, and suggests steps that adults can take to create a durable and constructive family until such reforms occur.

Book When Medicine Goes Awry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Juanne Nancarrow Clarke
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2022-01-27
  • ISBN : 1487538073
  • Pages : 341 pages

Download or read book When Medicine Goes Awry written by Juanne Nancarrow Clarke and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical error often results in disability, pain, and suffering, and it is the third leading cause of death in hospitals. Despite its frequency, medical error has been largely invisible to the mainstream public. Within the medical system itself, medical error is often understood as the result of an isolated case of malpractice. When Medicine Goes Awry argues that the causes of medical error are not an anomaly but rather the outcome of a number of factors at play, ranging from political to social to economic. When Medicine Goes Awry dismisses the common blame perspective associated with medical malpractice, instead asserting that medical error is – and will continue to be – inevitable, given the relentless and expanding processes of medicalization. Shedding light on the ways these forces lead to medicine going awry, the book examines seven well-known cases of medical error. Taking an in-depth look at both patients and medical care providers, Juanne Nancarrow Clarke offers a novel approach to medical error or mishap that applies sociological research and theory to the larger societal forces contributing to a taxing and endemic medical problem.
