Book From Servants of the Empire to Everyday Heroes

Download or read book From Servants of the Empire to Everyday Heroes written by Tobias Harper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, the British Crown appointed around a hundred thousand people - military and civilian - in Britain and the British Empire to honours and titles. For outsiders, and sometimes recipients too, these jumbles of letters are tantalizingly confusing: OM, MBE, GCVO, CH, KB, or CBE. Throughout the century, this system expanded to include different kinds of people, while also shrinking in its imperial scope with the declining empire. Through these dual processes, this profoundly hierarchical system underwent a seemingly counter-intuitive change: it democratized. Why and how did the British government change this system? And how did its various publics respond to it? This study addresses these questions directly by looking at the history of the honours system in the wider context of the major historical changes in Britain and the British Empire in the twentieth century. In particular, it looks at the evolution of this hierarchical, deferential system amidst democratization and decolonization. It focuses on the system's largest-and most important-components: the Order of the British Empire, the Knight Bachelor, and the lower ranks of other Orders. By creatively analysing the politics and administration of the system alongside popular responses to it in diaries, letters, newspapers, and memoirs, Tobias Harper shows the many different meanings that honours took on for the establishment, dissidents, and recipients. He also shows the ways in which the system succeeded and failed to order and bring together divided societies.

Book The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki

Download or read book The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki written by Jesse L Byock and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed in medieval Iceland, Hrolf's Saga is one of the greatest of all mythic-legendary sagas, relating half-fantastical events that were said to have occurred in fifth-century Denmark. It tells of the exploits of King Hrolf and of his famous champions, including Bodvar Bjarki, the 'bear-warrior': a powerful figure whose might and bear-like nature are inspired by the same legendary heritage as Beowulf. Depicting a world of wizards, sorceresses and 'berserker' fighters - originally members of a cult of Odin - this is a compelling tale of ancient magic. A work of timeless power and beauty, it offers both a treasury of Icelandic prose and a masterful gathering of epic, cultic memory, traditional folk tale and myths from the Viking age and far earlier.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Music and Advertising

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Music and Advertising written by James Deaville and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Music and Advertising is an essential guide to the crucial role that music plays in relation to the audio or audiovisual advertising message, from the perspectives of its creation, interpretation, and reception. The book's unique three-part organization reflects this life cycle of an advertisement, from industry inception to mass-mediated text to consumer behaviour. Experts well versed in the practice, analysis, and empirical studies of the commercial message have contributed to the collection's forty-two chapters, which collectively represent the most ambitious and comprehensive attempt to date to address the important intersections of music and advertising. Handbook chapters are self-contained yet share borders with other contributions within a given section and across the major sections of the book, so readers can either study one topic of particular interest or read through to gain an understanding of the broader issues at stake. Within the book's Introduction, each editor has provided an overview of the unifying themes for the section for which they were responsible, with brief summaries of individual contributions at the beginnings of the sections. The lists of recommended readings at the end of chapters are intended to assist readers in finding further literature about the topic. An overview of industry practices by a music insider is provided in the Appendix, giving context for the three parts of the book.

Book Russia EU Relations and the Common Neighborhood

Download or read book Russia EU Relations and the Common Neighborhood written by Irina Busygina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining Russia–EU relations in terms of the forms and types of power tools they use, this book argues that the deteriorating relations between Russia and the EU lie in the deep differences in their preferences for the international status quo. These different approaches, combined with economic interdependence and geographic proximity, means both parties experience significant difficulties in shaping strategy and formulating agendas with regards to each other. The Russian leadership is well aware of the EU’s "authority orientation" but fails to reliably predict foreign policy at the EU level, whilst the EU realizes Russia’s "coercive orientation" in general, but cannot predict when and where coercive tools will be used next. Russia is gradually realizing the importance of authority, while the EU sees the necessity of coercion tools for coping with certain challenges. The learning process is ongoing but the basic distinction remains unchanged and so their approaches cannot be reconciled as long as both actors exist in their current form. Using a theoretical framework and case studies including Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine, Busygina examines the possibilities and constraints that arise when the "power of authority" and the "power of coercion" interact with each other, and how this interaction affects third parties.

Download or read book Waking up an Empath written by Kim Wuirch and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waking Up an Empath: A Year in the Life of an Empath from Awakening to Spiritual Healer is the honest, often comical year in the life story of Kimberly Wuirch. Having been labeled as sensitive throughout her life, even by her mother, Kimberly finally finds out the reason why her emotions and moods are often heightened. She discovers that she is an empath. This book is based on one year of Kimberly’s life—from the shock of finding out she was an empath and learning what that meant, to the journey through spiritual awakening, and finally to becoming a healer, psychic, and medium. Her story is relatable to many people who are too afraid to let the world know of their abilities or who are only just discovering who they really are. Kimberly wrote this book to help other empaths realize that their thoughts, feelings, and sudden mood swings are all a normal part of being an empath and how difficult it is for those on the outside to fully understand what life is like for an empath. In the pages of this book, Kimberly is like the good and knowledgeable friend whom empaths can confide in when it comes to their own spiritual awakening and the fears and challenges that brings up. There are not only words on the pages of this book. There is also love and compassion for a journey Kimberly knows all too well.
