Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The book addresses chronologically the most striking reactions of the art world to the rise of military engagement in Vietnam then in Cambodia.” —Guillaume LeBot, Critique d’art The Vietnam War (1964–1975) divided American society like no other war of the twentieth century, and some of the most memorable American art and art-related activism of the last fifty years protested U.S. involvement. At a time when Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art dominated the American art world, individual artists and art collectives played a significant role in antiwar protest and inspired subsequent generations of artists. This significant story of engagement, which has never been covered in a book-length survey before, is the subject of Kill for Peace. Writing for both general and academic audiences, Matthew Israel recounts the major moments in the Vietnam War and the antiwar movement and describes artists’ individual and collective responses to them. He discusses major artists such as Leon Golub, Edward Kienholz, Martha Rosler, Peter Saul, Nancy Spero, and Robert Morris; artists’ groups including the Art Workers’ Coalition (AWC) and the Artists Protest Committee (APC); and iconic works of collective protest art such as AWC’s Q. And Babies? A. And Babies and APC’s The Artists Tower of Protest. Israel also formulates a typology of antiwar engagement, identifying and naming artists’ approaches to protest. These approaches range from extra-aesthetic actions—advertisements, strikes, walk-outs, and petitions without a visual aspect—to advance memorials, which were war memorials purposefully created before the war’s end that criticized both the war and the form and content of traditional war memorials. “Accessible and informative.” —Art Libraries Society of North America

Book Hindu Buddhist Art of Vietnam

Download or read book Hindu Buddhist Art of Vietnam written by Emmanuel Guillon and published by Weatherhill, Incorporated. This book was released on 2001 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kingdom of Champa, which flourished from the second to the nineteenth centuries, is by far the least-known of all the great Indianized civilizations of Southeast Asia. Its own history was violent and ultimately tragic, and, as it covered large areas of what is now central and southern Vietnam, access to the region has been difficult for most of the last sixty years. Hindu-Buddhist Art of Vietnamis the first substantial book in English on the art of this remarkable and distinctive civilization. It first provides an overview of Cham history, including references to the many influences from neighboring civilizations that shaped it, including Khmer, Javanese, Srivijaya, Dvaravati, and Chinese. It goes on to illustrate and describe more than a hundred major sculptures at present housed in the National Museum at Dà Nang. Cham art is unmistakable and individualistic, vigorous and even dramatic in its rendering of movement. Mostly carved in sandstone and in high relief, the sculptures represent the main Hindu and Buddhist deities, real and fabulous animals in combative poses, and flying celestial beings and dancers. Richly illustrated with views of the monuments and the superb countryside in which they were built, this book brings to life a brilliant civilization.

Download or read book A Rift in the Earth written by James Reston and published by Arcade. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Distinguished and Bestselling Historian and Army Veteran Revisits the Culture War that Raged around the Selection of Maya Lin's Design for the Vietnam Memorial A Rift in the Earth tells the remarkable story of the ferocious "art war" that raged between 1979 and 1984 over what kind of memorial should be built to honor the men and women who died in the Vietnam War. The story intertwines art, politics, historical memory, patriotism, racism, and a fascinating set of characters, from those who fought in the conflict and those who resisted it to politicians at the highest level. At its center are two enduring figures: Maya Lin, a young, Asian-American architecture student at Yale whose abstract design won the international competition but triggered a fierce backlash among powerful figures; and Frederick Hart, an innovative sculptor of humble origins on the cusp of stardom. James Reston, Jr., a veteran who lost a close friend in the war and has written incisively about the conflict's bitter aftermath, explores how the debate reignited passions around Vietnam long after the war's end and raised questions about how best to honor those who fought and sacrificed in an ill-advised war. The book is richly illustrated with photographs from the era and design entries from the memorial competition. The paperback edition has a new foreword by Jan Scruggs, the founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. "The memorial appears as a rift in the earth, a long polished black stone wall, emerging from and receding into the earth." —Maya Lin "I see the wall as a kind of ocean, a sea of sacrifice. . . . I place these figures upon the shore of that sea." —Frederick Hart

Book excerpt: . In the fall of 1970, a young reporter, eager to learn what the Vietnam War is really all about, gets himself sent to a small forward Army camp in the Central Highlands that the men have dubbed Fort Nowhere. As time passes and he becomes more and more involved with the men and their mission, he realizes that this small company of dedicated soldiers are the only ones standing between the friendly people of the village and the murderous Viet Cong who want to wipe them off the map. Along the way, he learns about life, love, courage and despair and discovers something about himself that he'll forever wish he hadn't as he becomes a member of this unusual brotherhood. Fort Nowhere, Vietnam, is based on actual people, paces and events that occurred between September 1970 and March 1971. It is a hard-hitting, often heartbreaking story of men in combat and the lives of the people they touched and vividly depicts the ways that the horror and chaos of combat brings out the very best--and worst---of the men who endure it.
