Book Avoiding Culture Shock

Download or read book Avoiding Culture Shock written by Armin Skierlo and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frustration, excitement, anger, happiness, anxiety, pleasure, grief - there are various ways how people may respond to living, studying, or working abroad, and everything that is related to it. While some sojourners have virtually no problems to blend in with unfamiliar cultural habits and customs, others seem to be struggling. They might experience the so-called culture shock when trying to cope with the new environment, which leaves them disinterested, strained, and depressed. What is culture shock; what are its symptoms? How severe can the so-called shock be? Should it be considered a mental disease, a physical problem, or merely a harmless natural process? What can sojourners do to cure or even prevent culture shock? What is culture? How are cultures different from each other? This book is tackling these questions and provides the necessary answers. It addresses people, who had, who are having, or who are going to have a temporary stay in a foreign country. Hence, it applies to students, interns, managers, expatriates, soldiers, missionaries, and tourists.

It's no surprise that when they try and talk to each other, chaos breaks out. In The Culture Map, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain in which people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together. She provides a field-tested model for decoding how cultural differences impact international business, and combines a smart analytical framework with practical, actionable advice.

Book Communicating and Adapting Across Cultures

Download or read book Communicating and Adapting Across Cultures written by Riall Nolan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-04-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, more Americans than ever are going abroad to visit, work, or study. Increasingly, the ability to communicate and work in cross-cultural situations is seen as an important determinant of success in business, government, education, and the social services. Being successful depends less on what you know of a particular culture than it does on what you know about managing new cultural situations. This book provides a comprehensive and practical guide to communicating, learning, and adapting within any new cultural environment. It begins by examining what culture is and why it is important. It then goes on to outline the process of cross-cultural adjustment, and presents some highly effective tools and strategies for avoiding culture shock, while encouraging learning. Advice on learning a language, preparing for the transition, settling in, working and living overseas, and planning re-entry into U.S. culture is given. One of the book's most useful features is the presentation of a detailed plan for actually making the transition from one culture to another. It also provides a detailed chapter on re-entering the home environment, again to aid in minimizing shock and anxiety. The skills learned from this book are essential to success and can be put to use in any new culture, anywhere in the world.

  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Exploring Culture written by Gert Jan Hofstede and published by Nicholas Brealey. This book was released on 2002-09-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterpiece in intercultural training! Exploring Culture brings Geert Hofstede's five dimensions of national culture to life. Gert Jan Hofstede and his co-authors Paul Pedersen and Geert Hofstede introduce synthetic cultures, the ten "pure" cultural types derived from the extremes of the five dimensions. The result is a playful book of practice that is firmly rooted in theory. Part light, part serious, but always thought-provoking, this unique book approaches training through the three-part process of building awareness, knowledge, and skills. It leads the reader through the first two components with more than 75 activities, dialogues, stories, and incidents. The Synthetic Culture Laboratory and two full simulations fulfill the skill-building component. Exploring Culture is suitable for students, trainers, coaches and educators. It can be used for individual study or as a text, and it serves as an excellent partner to Geert Hofstede's popular Cultures and Organizations.

Book Culture Shock and Multiculturalism

Download or read book Culture Shock and Multiculturalism written by Edward Dutton and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It used to be widely accepted amongst anthropologists that when they conducted fieldwork with foreign cultures they experienced something called ‘culture shock.’ This book will argue that ‘culture shock’ is a useful model for understanding an important part of human experience. However, in its most widely-known form, the stage model, ‘culture shock’ has been heavily influenced by the same anti-science, latter-day religiosity that has become so influential more broadly: Multiculturalism. This book will examine culture shock through the model of ‘religion.’ It will show how the most well-known model of culture shock – so popular amongst business consultants, expatriates, international students and travelers – has become a means of promoting and sustaining this replacement religion which includes everything from dogmatism and fervour to conversion experience. By so doing, it will aim both to better understand culture shock and to show how it can still be useful, if divorced from its implicitly religious dimensions, to broadly scientific scholars. It will also suggest how anthropology itself might be stripped of its ideological infiltration and returned to the realm of science.
