This volume details the derivation of analytical solutions of airplane flight mechanics problems associated with flight in a vertical plane. It covers trajectory analysis, stability, and control. In addition, the volume presents algorithms for calculating lift, drag, pitching moment, and stability derivatives. Throughout, a subsonic business jet is used as an example for the calculations presented in the book.

  • Publisher : Harper Collins

Book excerpt: Colin Powell once observed that "a dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work." This sentiment is mirrored dramatically in the story of African Americans in aerospace history. The invention of the airplane in the first decade of the twentieth century sparked a revolution in modern technology. Aviation in the popular mind became associated with adventure and heroism. For African Americans, however, this new realm of human flight remained off-limits, a consequence of racial discrimination. Many African Americans displayed a keen interest in the new air age, but found themselves routinely barred from gaining training as pilots or mechanics. Beginning in the 1920s, a small and widely scattered group of black air enthusiasts challenged this prevailing pattern of racial discrimination. With no small amount of effort—and against formidable odds—they gained their pilot licenses and acquired the technical skills to become aircraft mechanics. Over the course of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, African Americans have expanded their participation in both military and civilian aviation and space flight, from the early pioneers and barnstormers through the Tuskegee airmen to Shuttle astronauts. Featuring approximately two hundred historic and contemporary photographs and a lively narrative that spans eight decades of U.S. history, Black Wings offers a compelling overview of this extraordinary and inspiring saga.

Download or read book Gray Matter written by Denny Pollard and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be completely frank about it, Im increasingly aware that there are as many gray areas in aviation as there are black-and-white ones, and Im beginning to feel as if I know less and less about what I do. Im a trained and reasonably experienced A&P mechanic, and Im supposed to know this airplane stuff, but my experiences are often contradictory to what I know are theoretical facts. Its frustrating, and sometimes I think I knew more back when I knew less. Or at least I thought I did. To keep an aircraft in peak operating condition, aircraft mechanics and service technicians perform scheduled maintenance to make repairs and complete inspections required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Many aircraft mechanics specialize in preventive maintenance. They inspect engines, landing gear, instruments, pressurized sections, accessoriesbrakes, valves, pumps, and air-conditioning systems, for exampleand other parts of the aircraft and do the necessary maintenance and replacement of parts. Inspections take place following a schedule based on the number of hours the aircraft has flown, calendar days, cycles of operation, or a combination of these factors. To examine an engine, aircraft mechanics work through specially designed openings while standing on ladders or scaffolds, or use hoists or lifts to remove the entire engine from the craft. After taking an engine apart, mechanics use precision instruments to measure parts for wear and use x-ray and magnetic inspection equipment to check for invisible cracks. Worn or defective parts are repaired or replaced. They may also repair sheet metal or composite surfaces, measure the tension of control cables, and check for corrosion, distortion, and cracks in the fuselage, wings, and tail. After completing all repairs, mechanics must test the equipment to ensure that it works properly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aircraft Mechanics Handbook Thousands of mechanics of various kinds are going to be needed to inspect, adjust and repair the large air fleet which is now being prepared in this country and as this is a new industry it has been deemed advisable to compile such facts regarding air craft as may help to make these available in the shortest time. Except for a considerable amount of actual personal observation in both factory and flying field, no originality is claimed for this handbook; instead, it represents what is believed to be the best practice known at this time and contains many suggestions which cannot fail to be of value to any aircraft mechanic. It is in the hope of aiding work of this kind, in helping to make our aircraft more efficient, that the work has been undertaken.
