Book Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety

Download or read book Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-09-18 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reduction of the fire hazard of fuel is critical to improving survivability in impact-survivable aircraft accidents. Despite current fire prevention and mitigation approaches, fuel flammability can overwhelm post-crash fire scenarios. The Workshop on Aviation Fuels with Improved Fire Safety was held November 19-20, 1996 to review the current state of development, technological needs, and promising technology for the future development of aviation fuels that are most resistant to ignition during a crash. This book contains a summary of workshop discussions and 11 presented papers in the areas of fuel and additive technologies, aircraft fuel system requirements, and the characterization of fuel fires.

Book Fire Safety Tests Comparing Synthetic Jet and Diesel Fuels with JP 8 PREPRINT

Download or read book Fire Safety Tests Comparing Synthetic Jet and Diesel Fuels with JP 8 PREPRINT written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental fire tests have been performed on various fuels derived both from a petroleum source and from a synthetic source via a Fischer-Tropsch process. Multiple fire tests were performed for each fuel type as well as fuel blends of conventional and synthetic fuels using aqueous film forming foam on a liquid pool fire following a prescribed military specification, MIL-F-24385F. Using the current U.S. Air Force jet fuel (JP-8) as a baseline comparison, the synthetic fuels or blends showed no significant difference in extinguishment times. Burnback times showed larger values for some of the synthetic fuels or blends when compared to JP-8, indicating improved safety for these specific synthetic fuels or blends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hearing is focused in the importance of investing in a stable supply chain for aviation production of biofuels. With the rising cost of jet fuel and the thriving American biofuel industry, we have an opportunity to help aviation by keeping costs down for the future. More importantly, production of green jet fuel will mean real economic growth and opportunity, not just in the United States but around the country. For over the past 50 years, Jet A fuel is the benchmark fuel used by commercial airlines. It's the gold standard that meets the strict requirements necessary for safe aircraft operation over a broad range of air temperatures and pressures.
