Book Fiber Orientation Tensors and Mean Field Homogenization Application to Sheet Molding Compound

Download or read book Fiber Orientation Tensors and Mean Field Homogenization Application to Sheet Molding Compound written by Bauer, Julian Karl and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites strongly depend on the microstructure, including the fibers' orientation. Studying this dependency, we identify the variety of fiber orientation tensors up to fourth-order using irreducible tensors and material symmetry. The case of planar fiber orientation tensors, relevant for sheet molding compound, is presented completely. Consequences for the reconstruction of fiber distributions and mean field homogenization are presented.

Book Deformation and Fracture Behaviour of Polymer Materials

Download or read book Deformation and Fracture Behaviour of Polymer Materials written by Wolfgang Grellmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the most recent advances in the deformation and fracture behaviour of polymer material. It provides deeper insight into related morphology–property correlations of thermoplastics, elastomers and polymer resins. Each chapter of this book gives a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art methods of materials testing and diagnostics, tailored for plastic pipes, films and adhesive systems as well as elastomeric components and others. The investigation of deformation and fracture behaviour using the experimental methods of fracture mechanics has been the subject of intense research during the last decade. In a systematic manner, modern aspects of fracture mechanics in the industrial application of polymers for bridging basic research and industrial development are illustrated by multifarious examples of innovative materials usage. This book will be of value to scientists, engineers and in polymer materials science.

Book Use of X radiographic Tracers to Measure Fiber Orientation in Short Fiber Composites

Download or read book Use of X radiographic Tracers to Measure Fiber Orientation in Short Fiber Composites written by DL. Denton and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The degree of fiber orientation is a major factor in determining the mechanical behavior of short fiber composites. A method to determine fiber orientation in short fiber composites such as sheet molding compound (SMC) is presented. A small amount of glass fibers with a high lead content is incorporated into the composite as a tracer. The lead glass tracer fibers mimic the orientation changes that occur during processing. X-radiographs of composites containing the lead glass fibers provide clear, high contrast images of the tracer fibers. Analysis of the X-radiographic image by Fraunhofer light diffraction provides a quantification of the degree of fiber orientation in the composite. Results of fiber orientation and mechanical property measurements for SMC composites molded with different amounts of flow are presented. These techniques are potentially useful for research on fiber orientation, development of prototype parts, optimization of molding conditions, and production quality control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having fully established themselves as workable engineering materials, composite materials are now increasingly commonplace around the world. Serves as both a text and reference guide to the behavior of composite materials in different engineering applications. Revised for this Second Edition, the text includes a general discussion of composites as material, practical aspects of design and performance, and further analysis that will be helpful to those engaged in research on composites. Each chapter closes with references for further reading and a set of problems that will be useful in developing a better understanding of the subject.

Book Fundamentals of Fiber Orientation

Download or read book Fundamentals of Fiber Orientation written by Charles L. Tucker III and published by Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH Co KG. This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers reinforced with discontinuous fibers have a wide range of important applications such as in automotive parts and business machines. The flow that occurs during processing of these materials creates a complex but repeatable pattern of fiber orientation, which plays a key role in achieving the desirable mechanical properties these materials can offer. The primary focus of this unique book is fi ber orientation: how to describe it mathematically, how to measure it experimentally, and how to predict it using models available in commercial software. The book also covers the description, measurement, and modeling of fiber length, another important variable that can be predicted by commercial software. The connection between fiber orientation and mechanical properties is explained, as is the relationship between fiber orientation and rheological properties in the fluid state. “Fundamentals of Fiber Orientation” focuses on the models used in current engineering practice, but also discusses topics from current research that could transition to engineering practice soon. For practicing engineers, this book teaches the fundamentals needed to understand data, set up meaningful simulations, and interpret results. The book provides a thorough, organized overview of the field, and will also be a valuable resource to those undertaking research in this area. Free MATLAB software implementing the models discussed in the book is provided online.
