Book excerpt: Cellular automata are regular uniform networks of locally-connected finite-state machines. They are discrete systems with non-trivial behaviour. Cellular automata are ubiquitous: they are mathematical models of computation and computer models of natural systems. The book presents results of cutting edge research in cellular-automata framework of digital physics and modelling of spatially extended non-linear systems; massive-parallel computing, language acceptance, and computability; reversibility of computation, graph-theoretic analysis and logic; chaos and undecidability; evolution, learning and cryptography. The book is unique because it brings together unequalled expertise of inter-disciplinary studies at the edge of mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics and biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellular automata make up a class of completely discrete dynamical systems, which have became a core subject in the sciences of complexity due to their conceptual simplicity, easiness of implementation for computer simulation, and their ability to exhibit a wide variety of amazingly complex behavior. The feature of simplicity behind complexity of cellular automata has attracted the researchers' attention from a wide range of divergent fields of study of science, which extend from the exact disciplines of mathematical physics up to the social ones, and beyond. Numerous complex systems containing many discrete elements with local interactions have been and are being conveniently modelled as cellular automata. In this book, the versatility of cellular automata as models for a wide diversity of complex systems is underlined through the study of a number of outstanding problems using these innovative techniques for modelling and simulation.

Book Combinatorics Automata and Number Theory

Download or read book Combinatorics Automata and Number Theory written by Valérie Berthé and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series is devoted to significant topics or themes that have wide application in mathematics or mathematical science and for which a detailed development of the abstract theory is less important than a thorough and concrete exploration of the implications and applications. Books in the Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications cover their subjects comprehensively. Less important results may be summarised as exercises at the ends of chapters, For technicalities, readers can be referred to the bibliography, which is expected to be comprehensive. As a result, volumes are encyclopedic references or manageable guides to major subjects.

Book Cellular Automata in Image Processing and Geometry

Download or read book Cellular Automata in Image Processing and Geometry written by Paul Rosin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents findings, views and ideas on what exact problems of image processing, pattern recognition and generation can be efficiently solved by cellular automata architectures. This volume provides a convenient collection in this area, in which publications are otherwise widely scattered throughout the literature. The topics covered include image compression and resizing; skeletonization, erosion and dilation; convex hull computation, edge detection and segmentation; forgery detection and content based retrieval; and pattern generation. The book advances the theory of image processing, pattern recognition and generation as well as the design of efficient algorithms and hardware for parallel image processing and analysis. It is aimed at computer scientists, software programmers, electronic engineers, mathematicians and physicists, and at everyone who studies or develops cellular automaton algorithms and tools for image processing and analysis, or develops novel architectures and implementations of massive parallel computing devices. The book will provide attractive reading for a general audience because it has do-it-yourself appeal: all the computer experiments presented within it can be implemented with minimal knowledge of programming. The simplicity yet substantial functionality of the cellular automaton approach, and the transparency of the algorithms proposed, makes the text ideal supplementary reading for courses on image processing, parallel computing, automata theory and applications.

Book Probabilistic Cellular Automata

Download or read book Probabilistic Cellular Automata written by Pierre-Yves Louis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Probabilistic Cellular Automata (PCA) from the perspectives of statistical mechanics, probability theory, computational biology and computer science. PCA are extensions of the well-known Cellular Automata models of complex systems, characterized by random updating rules. Thanks to their probabilistic component, PCA offer flexible computing tools for complex numerical constructions, and realistic simulation tools for phenomena driven by interactions among a large number of neighboring structures. PCA are currently being used in various fields, ranging from pure probability to the social sciences and including a wealth of scientific and technological applications. This situation has produced a highly diversified pool of theoreticians, developers and practitioners whose interaction is highly desirable but can be hampered by differences in jargon and focus. This book – just as the workshop on which it is based – is an attempt to overcome these difference and foster interest among newcomers and interaction between practitioners from different fields. It is not intended as a treatise, but rather as a gentle introduction to the role and relevance of PCA technology, illustrated with a number of applications in probability, statistical mechanics, computer science, the natural sciences and dynamical systems. As such, it will be of interest to students and non-specialists looking to enter the field and to explore its challenges and open issues.

Book Cellular Learning Automata Theory and Applications

Download or read book Cellular Learning Automata Theory and Applications written by Reza Vafashoar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights both theoretical and applied advances in cellular learning automata (CLA), a type of hybrid computational model that has been successfully employed in various areas to solve complex problems and to model, learn, or simulate complicated patterns of behavior. Owing to CLA’s parallel and learning abilities, it has proven to be quite effective in uncertain, time-varying, decentralized, and distributed environments. The book begins with a brief introduction to various CLA models, before focusing on recently developed CLA variants. In turn, the research areas related to CLA are addressed as bibliometric network analysis perspectives. The next part of the book presents CLA-based solutions to several computer science problems in e.g. static optimization, dynamic optimization, wireless networks, mesh networks, and cloud computing. Given its scope, the book is well suited for all researchers in the fields of artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning.

Book Elements of Automata Theory

Download or read book Elements of Automata Theory written by Jacques Sakarovitch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automata theory lies at the foundation of computer science, and is vital to a theoretical understanding of how computers work and what constitutes formal methods. This treatise gives a rigorous account of the topic and illuminates its real meaning by looking at the subject in a variety of ways. The first part of the book is organised around notions of rationality and recognisability. The second part deals with relations between words realised by finite automata, which not only exemplifies the automata theory but also illustrates the variety of its methods and its fields of application. Many exercises are included, ranging from those that test the reader, to those that are technical results, to those that extend ideas presented in the text. Solutions or answers to many of these are included in the book.
