Book Surveillance Militarism and Drama in the Elizabethan Era

Download or read book Surveillance Militarism and Drama in the Elizabethan Era written by C. Breight and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-11-07 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curtis Breight challenges the view that Renaissance English rulers could not dominate their domestic population. He argues, alternatively, that the Elizabethan state was controlled by the Cecilian faction, which maintained power by focusing English energies outwardly. Cecilians launched relentless assaults by land and sea against England's neighbours. By the 1590s their policies had enriched a few yet destroyed countless people, and this book reads the drama of Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare in relation to ongoing national and international conflict.

Book The Medieval Manuscripts at Maynooth

Download or read book The Medieval Manuscripts at Maynooth written by Peter J. Lucas and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides an in-depth guide to the Maynooth medieval manuscripts (some sixteen of them, plus fragments) with illustrations. The descriptions of the manuscripts include complete palaeographical and codicological details and full information on the contents of the manuscripts and their history as far as it is known. Some of the manuscripts are of particular importance, either for their texts or for their illustrations, which are of good quality, or in one case because of the particular circumstances in which it was made. This material has lain mostly unknown for up to two hundred years, and in most cases the works contained in the manuscripts have not hitherto been identified. For the first time, consideration is also given to the collection as a whole, and how its make-up may reflect the history and character of the institution where it was built up. In the absence of any one major donor whose interests might have dominated, the collection grew over decades mainly in the nineteenth century. It therefore reflects the tastes of a succession of senior members of the college plus a few donors"--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: These superbly crafted stories reveal an astonishing range, with settings that vary from a farm on the Canadian prairies to Bloomsbury in London, from a high-rise apartment to a mine-shaft. Vanderhaeghe has the uncanny ability to show us the world through the eyes of an eleven-year-old boy as convincingly as he reveals it through the eyes of an old man approaching senility. Moving from the hilarious farce of teenage romance all the way to the numbing tragedy of life in a ward for incurables, these twelve stories inspire belief, admiration, and enjoyment, and come together to form a vibrant chronicle of human experience from a gifted observer of life’s joys and tribulations. This is Guy Vanderhaeghe’s brilliant first book of fiction.

Book Gaming the Metrics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mario Biagioli
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2020-01-28
  • ISBN : 0262356570
  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Gaming the Metrics written by Mario Biagioli and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the increasing reliance on metrics to evaluate scholarly publications has produced new forms of academic fraud and misconduct. The traditional academic imperative to “publish or perish” is increasingly coupled with the newer necessity of “impact or perish”—the requirement that a publication have “impact,” as measured by a variety of metrics, including citations, views, and downloads. Gaming the Metrics examines how the increasing reliance on metrics to evaluate scholarly publications has produced radically new forms of academic fraud and misconduct. The contributors show that the metrics-based “audit culture” has changed the ecology of research, fostering the gaming and manipulation of quantitative indicators, which lead to the invention of such novel forms of misconduct as citation rings and variously rigged peer reviews. The chapters, written by both scholars and those in the trenches of academic publication, provide a map of academic fraud and misconduct today. They consider such topics as the shortcomings of metrics, the gaming of impact factors, the emergence of so-called predatory journals, the “salami slicing” of scientific findings, the rigging of global university rankings, and the creation of new watchdogs and forensic practices.

Book Elizabeth of York and Her Six Daughters in Law

Download or read book Elizabeth of York and Her Six Daughters in Law written by Retha M. Warnicke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of early modern queenship compares the reign of Henry VII’s queen, Elizabeth of York, and those of her daughters-in-law, the six queens of Henry VIII. It defines the traditional expectations for effective Tudor queens—particularly the queen’s critical function of producing an heir—and evaluates them within that framework, before moving to consider their other contributions to the well-being of the court. This fresh comparative approach emphasizes spheres of influence rather than chronology, finding surprising juxtapositions between the various queens’ experiences as mothers, diplomats, participants in secular and religious rituals, domestic managers, and more. More than a series of biographies of individual queens, Elizabeth of York and Her Six Daughters-in-Law is a careful, illuminating examination of the nature of Tudor queenship.
