CHAPTER XXIV THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS OF DESIGN CHANGED INTO A "DEPARTMENT OF ART "--SOME INQUIRIES INTO THE INFLUENCE OF RELIGION ON CHARACTER. Exact chronology is of little consequence in these notes of mine. The particular powers of memory I do not possess are those that command dates. Dates being out of my power, I may therefore go back or forward a little in my record. The year 1852--the year following the first great International Exhibition, --welcomed with surprise by all the world and by Tennyson our laureate as the Avatar of perpetual peace, began the change in the affairs of the Government scheme for spreading arteducation over the country, as I have already mentioned. Hitherto the country did not understand its own needs in the field of artistic taste, and in the improvement of our manufactures, which were materially and constructively so far ahead of other countries. Every functionary employed in the effort to spread knowledge and taste, through schools of design, worked against obstacles both from without and within, hopeless of overcoming them, only trying to hide them, and not to commit himself by affirming or acting on ideas not universally acknowledged. The Inspector who visited Newcastle just before the change appeared to me the worst I had then seen, and so completely to represent the false position under which we all suffered that I privately celebrated his visit in some satirical verses. At the time of writing this satire, I did not know the perplexities of the position of this able inspector, but a few months later, as one evening my old and dear friend, Ralph N. Wornum, who had become lecturer to the schools, was sitting with me, I read the verses to him, when he informed me that this very individual was possibly to...

This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Notes of the Life of William Bell Scott, Vol. 1: And Notices of His Artistic and Poetic Circle of Friends, 1830 to 1882 These attempts on my part have had a self educational excuse. I have thought to understand myself better by their means. But it has not been SO the difficulty Of looking upon oneself from an Outer standpoint is too great. It is not impossible to do so; but if we could see ourselves as Others see us, the poetical interest at least is gone, the record is worthless. It is no more a true picture Of What we saw, felt, enjoyed, or suffered, but Of mis takes and reasons - the dead elements Of the scene. The result is a wpm' mortzmm. I come to the conviction that autobiographic writings may be in structive to others; not to the writers. The best excuse for them is to be found in the pleasure they may afford, the luxury Of again experiencing early emotions and scenes, however faintly, and communi cating them to the friendly and sympathetic. Book Rival Sisters Art and Music at the Birth of Modernism 1815 915

Download or read book Rival Sisters Art and Music at the Birth of Modernism 1815 915 written by JamesH. Rubin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing the concept of music and painting as 'rival sisters' during the nineteenth century, this interdisciplinary collection explores the productive exchange-from rivalry to inspiration to collaboration-between the two media in the age of Romanticism and Modernism. The volume traces the relationship between art and music, from the opposing claims for superiority of the early nineteenth century, to the emergence of the concept of synesthesia around 1900. This collection puts forward a more complex history of the relationship between art and music than has been described in earlier works, including an intermixing of models and distinctions between approaches to them. Individual essays from art history, musicology, and literature examine the growing influence of art upon music, and vice versa, in the works of Berlioz, Courbet, Manet, Fantin-Latour, Rodin, Debussy, and the Pre-Raphaelites, among other artists.

Book Holman Hunt and the Light of the World in Oxford

Download or read book Holman Hunt and the Light of the World in Oxford written by Markus Bockmuehl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date introduction to the religious and artistic story behind The Light of the World by William Holman Hunt. Created in the mid-nineteenth century, it is often said to be the most widely exhibited work of art in history and remains one of the most widely known Christian paintings to this day. The subject matter provides a rich wealth of resources, touching on the extraordinary artistic renewal associated with the Oxford Movement, its religious and intellectual revolution in recovering early Christian tropes and motives of scriptural interpretation. The book also considers the painting’s impact on the religious and cultural life of the British Empire as its tour served not just spiritual edification but also the promotion of imperial values. The contributions reflect on concerns of decolonisation while illustrating religious art’s ability to engage relevantly with contemporary concerns. Enabling a fresh encounter with the painting, this book will be of interest to theologians, biblical scholars, and historians.

Book Victorian Education and the Ideal of Womanhood

Download or read book Victorian Education and the Ideal of Womanhood written by Joan N. Burstyn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, first published in 1980, argues that higher education for women was accepted by the end of the nineteenth-century, and higher education was becoming a desirable preparation for teachers in girls’ schools. By accepting the opponents’ claim that higher education for women had the potential to revolutionise relations between the sexes, this fascinating book demonstrates how the relevance of the nineteenth-century serves to enhance our understanding of the contemporary women’s movement. This title will be of interest to students of history and education.

Book The Letters of A E Housman

Download or read book The Letters of A E Housman written by Alfred Edward Housman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-29 with total page 1290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Letters of A. E. Housman is a scholarly edition of over 2200 letters. (The previous edition, edited by Henry Maas, contained just over 880.) The letters cover the whole range of Housman's daily activities, whether he writes as poet, Professor of Latin, son, brother, uncle, friend, or citizen. Thus they allow the fullest possible revelation of a man whose reserve was legendary. He emerges as a more amiable, more sociable, more generous, more painstaking, and more complexperson than has previously been realized. In most cases the source of the text is a manuscript, and this has resulted in a text that is more accurate and more complete than any previously available. Accompanying the text are notes covering persons and places, poetry, classical scholarship, publishinghistory, and literary allusion and echo.

Download or read book Troy on Display written by Abigail Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores what visitors saw at the Trojan exhibition and why its contents, including treasure, plain pottery and human remains captured imaginations and divided opinions. When Schliemann's Trojan collection was first exhibited in 1877, no-one had seen anything like it. Schliemann claimed these objects had been owned by participants in the Trojan War and that they were tangible evidence that Homer's epics were true. Yet, these objects did not reflect the heroic past imagined by Victorians, and a fierce controversy broke out about the collection's value and significance. Schliemann invited Londoners to see the very unclassical objects on display as the roots of classical culture. Artists, poets, historians, race theorists, bankers and humourists took up this challenge, but their conclusions were not always to Schliemann's liking. Troy's appeal lay in its materiality: visitors could apply analytical techniques (from aesthetic appreciation to skull-measuring) to the collection and draw their own conclusions. This book argues for a deep examination of museum exhibitions as a constructed spatial experience, which can transform how the past is seen. This new angle on a famous archaeological discovery shows the museum as a site of controversy, where hard evidence and wild imagination came together to form a lasting image of Troy.
