Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of John E. Massey I hope that without prejudice I have assembled in this book all of Mr. Massey's material of pub lic interest. I say without prejudice, for I would have been a Debvtpaying Democrat if I had been old enough, while all the members of my family gave their political strength to defeat the Read juster movement. In building the book, as I think Mr. Massey would have done, giving a con nected history of Readjusterism from the point of view of the Father of Readjustment as well as Mr. Massey's autobiography, as far as possible in the Parson's own vigorous language, I have endeavored to portray the unique personality of one of the most important of those persons that dominated the political life of Virginia during the last century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of John E. Massey Mr. Massey intended to make two books out of his material - one a history of the Readjuster movement in Virginia, the other his autobiography. This material consisted of letters, notes in his handwriting, and newspaper clippings. He died soon after he had finished the compilation of his data, leaving the material in unpublishable form, and not even in chronological sequence. I hope that without prejudice I have assembled in this book all of Mr. Massey's material of public interest. I say without prejudice, for I would have been a Debtpaying Democrat if I had been old enough, while all the members of my family gave their political strength to defeat the Readjuster movement. Book Katharine and R J Reynolds

Download or read book Katharine and R J Reynolds written by Michele Gillespie and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Separately they were formidable—together they were unstoppable. Despite their intriguing lives and the deep impact they had on their community and region, the story of Richard Joshua Reynolds (1850–1918) and Katharine Smith Reynolds (1880–1924) has never been fully told. Now Michele Gillespie provides a sweeping account of how R. J. and Katharine succeeded in realizing their American dreams. From relatively modest beginnings, R. J. launched the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which would eventually develop two hugely profitable products, Prince Albert pipe tobacco and Camel cigarettes. His marriage in 1905 to Katharine Smith, a dynamic woman thirty years his junior, marked the beginning of a unique partnership that went well beyond the family. As a couple, the Reynoldses conducted a far-ranging social life and, under Katharine's direction, built Reynolda House, a breathtaking estate and model farm. Providing leadership to a series of progressive reform movements and business innovations, they helped drive one of the South's best examples of rapid urbanization and changing race relations in the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Together they became one of the New South's most influential elite couples. Upon R. J.'s death, Katharine reinvented herself, marrying a World War I veteran many years her junior and engaging in a significant new set of philanthropic pursuits. Katharine and R. J. Reynolds reveals the broad economic, social, cultural, and political changes that were the backdrop to the Reynoldses' lives. Portraying a New South shaped by tensions between rural poverty and industrial transformation, white working-class inferiority and deeply entrenched racism, and the solidification of a one-party political system, Gillespie offers a masterful life-and-times biography of these important North Carolinians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the grim decades after the Civil War, Southerners dreamed of industrial growth and agricultural diversification. In this study, Mr. Moore traces the development and changes that took place in the Old Dominion during these troubled postbellum years. The state's massive debt burden touched off an upheaval, splintering the electorate into competing Funder and Readjuster factions. The Funders, composed largely of the conservative farmers of eastern Virginia and the commercial classes of the towns, were committed to pay off Virginia's prewar debt in full. The Readjusters, drawing their support from the fringe elements of society, sought a more realistic, downward adjustment of the debt.
