Book excerpt: Many Allied POWs in the Pacific theater of World War II suffered terribly. But abuse wasn't a matter of Japanese policy, as is commonly assumed. Sarah Kovner shows poorly trained guards and rogue commanders inflicted the most horrific damage. Camps close to centers of imperial power tended to be less violent, and many POWs died from friendly fire.

Book excerpt: In early September 1943, Italy capitulated to the Allies. Australian prisoners of war, POWs, seized this watershed moment and snatched supplies before walking out of Italy's rice farms scattered on the Piedmont plain west of Milan. Escapes were mostly easy but freedom was vexed. The ultimate challenge for escaped POWs was to navigate and to outlive the volatile context of post-armistice Italy beyond their prison camps. Wearing uniforms or a motley clash of civilian cast-off clothing, escapers had a price on their heads as they headed north towards alpine passes and neutral Swiss territory, or as they wandered in search of advancing Allied Lines in south Italy. During their treks through mountains, valleys and 'freedom trails', Australians teamed up with New Zealand, British and South African POWs to dodge German and fascist militia and to take up arms with fledgling Resistance brigades. Not all escaped POWs survived. At its heart, Shooting Through highlights a unique shared history between Australian escapers and the Italians who risked severe retributions to host and guide the POWs. Drawing extensively on first-hand accounts sourced from Australian and British archives, as well as memoirs and oral accounts by ex-POWs and Italian witnesses, Katrina Kittel weaves the stories of thirty escaper groups through time and theme to reveal key evasion routes and the various outcomes that befell escaped POWs in Italy. The veterans' accounts burst with humour and compassion as they offer their insights into Italy's war. From her perspective as a graduate historian and as a daughter to a former POW, Katrina Kittel has uncovered a richer story behind the few enigmatic details that her father, Colin Booth, and many of his fellow POWs chose to share with their families. Shooting Through includes a nominal roll of Australian POWs interned at the Campo 106 rice farms. Shooting Through includes a foreword by Professor Peter Monteath.

Download or read book Crossing the Wire written by David Coombes and published by ReadHowYouWant. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So wrote an Australian prisoner - of - war, Corporal Lancelot Davies, only recently taken prisoner at the first battle of Bullecourt, on 11 April 1917. For him - like another 1,200 Australians captured at Bullecourt - the future was indeed 'blank' and unpredictable. The experiences of Australian prisoners of war (POWs) or Kriegsgefangeners held captive in Germany has been largely forgotten or ignored - overshadowed by the horrid stories of Australians imprisoned by the Japanese during World War II. Yet, as David Coombes makes known, the stories are interesting and significant - not only providing an account of what those young Australian soldiers experienced, and the spirit they showed in responding to captivity - but also for the insight it provides into Germany in the last eighteen months of the war.

Book P O W

Download or read book P O W written by Peter Monteath and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 2011 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australians from every branch of our armed forces in World War ll found themselves captives in Hitler's notorious prisoner of war camps. Whether bomber crews and fighter pilots shot down over Europe, soldiers taken in North Africa and the disastrous Greek and Cretan campaigns, or even merchant seaman captured half a world away, they were to see out the war in the heart of Hitler's Europe, their fate intimately connected to the fortunes of the Reich. Most were forced to labour in factories, down mines or on the land - often in conditions of enormous privation and hardship. All suffered from shortages, overcrowding and the mental strain of imprisonment. Some tried to escape - a few successfully, a few paying with their lives. The experiences of Australian prisoners of war in Germany have long been overshadowed by the horrors of Japanese imprisonment, yet their stories of courage, stoicism, suffering and endurance deserve to be told. Peter Monteath's fascinating narrative history of these prisoners of war is exhaustively researched, and compelling in its detailed evocation.
