Book Australian Life in Town Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Australian Life in Town Country Classic Reprint written by E. C. Buley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Life in Town Country It is necessary to conceive Of Australia not as a colony containing a population equal to little more than one half the number of inhabitants of the city Of London, but as an immense continent, three million square miles in extent. Compared to other continents, which have their coast lines indented by huge gulfs, and which push great peninsulas out into the ocean, Australia is a Sin gularly solid piece of land. As a matter Of fact, its coast line is smaller in proportion to its area than that of any other continent. The physical con tour Of the continent is remarkable for the same monotony. Its surface is, broadly speaking, a graduated system of immense plateaux and plains. The one striking feature in Australian orography is a strip of highland running from north to south along the eastern coast. These highlands, which separate the coastal plains and valleys from the immense level interior of the continent, bear the general name of the Dividing Range. In the south-eastern corner of Australia, this range bends westward, traversing the whole state Of Victoria and ending near the eastern border Of South Aus tralia. It is in the south-eastern corner that the Dividing Range attains its greatest altitude, sev eral peaks Of the Australian Alps being over seven thousand feet in height. Book excerpt: Town Life in Australia by Richard Ernest Nowell Twopeny Although most educated people know that Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide are populous towns, I should doubt whether one Englishman, who has not been to Australia, out of a hundred realizes that fact. I well remember that, although I had taken some trouble to read up information about Melbourne, I was never more thoroughly surprised than during the first few hours after my arrival there. And I hear almost everyone who comes out from England say that his experience has been the same as my own. In one sense the visitor is disappointed with his first day in an Australian city. The novelties and the differences from the Old Country do not strike him nearly so much as the resemblances. It is only as he gets to know the place better that he begins to to notice the differences. The first prevailing impression is that a slice of Liverpool has been bodily transplanted to the Antipodes, that you must have landed in England again by mistake, and it is only by degrees that you begin to see that the resemblance is more superficial than real. Download or read book Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life Classic Reprint written by William Henry Suttor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life Telegraph in Sydney, they have beguiled many weary hours of their author at a time of much anxiety for all those who, like himself, were interested in the great pas toral industry of the country. Iam no judge of their merits, if, indeed, they have any. The first person who suggested their collection in this form was the late Chief Justice, Sir James Martin, who was pleased to speak in terms somewhat too laudatory of them, and in his rapid manner said, You must put them in a book, you know - you must put them in a book. Well, here they are in a book. There is little or nothing imagina tive in the volume. The Stories Retold are chiefly gathered from the Press records of the day, and from the word of mouth of old colonial friends who have some recollection of the events narrated. The Sketches of Country Life are derived almost wholly from my own experiences. The descriptions of men and scenery are exactly set down as they appeared to me. So many wonderful changes have taken place in colonial society since I was young, that I venture to h0pe the book may not prove uninteresting to those who have not been eyewitnesses of those changes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Life I was walking along George Street, Brisbane, last Monday in the afternoon when I suddenly ran upon my friend Power. Power is a man worth knowing. I suppose no one has been along the Australian coast, from Perth to Port Darwin, more Often than he has. Is there a little port-town all round that he has not been in? Is there a river, navi gable or unnavigable, that finds its way into Australian seas. That he has not floated on? His stock Of tales is the largest and best Of anyone I know, and he has a sort of humorous kindliness about him, a genuine humanistic tolerance and appreciation, which has made him the friend of all sorts and conditions of men, women, and animals. He has the unctuous pleasure of discovering and understanding every oddity, and the light of this pleasure beams up in his eyes and on his lips and in his whole face as he sits Opposite some abnormal piece of humanity in a cosy corner, just as when he pauses from his submarine work in his diver's dress to observe the antics Of some eccentric denizen of the deep. Book Sunny Australia Impressions of the Country and People Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sunny Australia Impressions of the Country and People Classic Reprint written by Archibald Marshall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunny Australia, Impressions of the Country and People The Commonwealth is not only large in area, but it possesses many features peculiar to itself, which cannot be understood at first sight. A travelling Englishman who sets out to write a book about Australia is therefore confronted by many difficult problems. Mr. Archibald Marshall seems to have realised that fully. What he has to say of men and manners - of city and country life in Australia - is put forward with great clear ness, but as impression only. His views will carry all the more weight on that account. Some very able critics on Australian affairs have lost in force what they have displayed in con fidence, by printing their flying opinions as if they were the considered judgments of old colonists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grey Town: An Australian Story Grey Town. An Australian Story. Chapter I. The Presbytery. Grey Town looks down on the river and the ocean, its streets climbing up the small hill upon which the town has been built. It is a pleasant place in which to live, where, in winter, the air is warm, and in summer a cool breeze from the ocean tempers the hottest day. At the feet of the town the ocean beats restlessly on the narrow strip of beach that fringes the shore. On the distant horizon one may often see the black smoke, sometimes the hull, shadowy and indistinct, of some passing steamer. But only the smaller steamers or ships can enter the bay, for there are reefs and sand-spits, to touch which would mean destruction. Beside the town, the River Grey enters the ocean. When the tide is high, and the river swollen by heavy rains, there is a turmoil of waters at the bar, ocean and river contending for mastery. Then the river, banked up at its exit, overflows the low lands that lie to the east of the town, turning a green valley into a muddy lake. At other times the Grey valley is green and pleasant, excepting where the masses of grey rock from which it has its name jut out over the river. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Webb's End: Australian Bush Life The officer in command of the detachment was an acquaintance, stood on the outskirts, watching with a certain interest. Presently passers-by and street-loafers, coming up stragglingly, more or less surrounded him. The detachment went bending round a corner a little way off, and then the last man disappeared. The gentleman turned to one side rather quickly with a smile and an exclamation to himself, and felt a tug at his fob. He at once looked down, at the same time receiving from behind a shove that threw him up against a man who was standing in front of him. In a moment it flashed across the gentleman's mind that he had been robbed, and his one idea was to see and catch the robber He recovered himself and turned round sharply. A few yards from him he saw moving quickly away out of the slowly dispersing crowd, a tall man With broad sloping shoulders and a slouch hat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Squatter's Dream a Story of Australian Life He was a great gardener, and had the best fruit trees and some of the best flowers in that part of the country. At all odd times, that is, early in the morning before it was time to dress for breakfast, in afternoons when he had been' out all day, and generally when he had nothing particular to do, he was accustomed to dig patiently, and to plant and prune, and drain and trench, in this garden of his. He was a strong fellow, who had always lived a steady kind of life, so that he had a constitution utterly unimpaired, and spirits to match. These last were so good that he generally rose in the morning with the kind of feeling which every boy experiences during the holidays - that the day was not long enough for all the enjoyable occupations which were before him, and that it was incumbent on him to rise up and enter into possession of these delights with as little loss of time as might be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Street Lamp: Vignettes of Australian Bush Life Much of the literature dealing with Australian bush life has represented, and for the most part, faithfully, the rougher, and it may be said the coarser and lower, elements in the charac ter of the back-blocks worker. But every one who knows the true Australian bushman knows that he has another side. Against the almost universal indulgence in drink, gambling, profanity, and general rowdyism, must be placed many noble characteristics. Although Sydney is the older town, Melbourne is justly entitled to be considered the metropolis of the Southern Hemisphere. The natural beauties of Sydney are worth coming all the way to Australia to see; while the situation of Melbourne is commonplace if not actually ugly; but it is in the Victorian city that the trade and capital, the business and pleasure of Australia chiefly centre. Is there a company to be got up to stock the wilds of Western Australia, or to form a railway on the land-grant system in Queensland, to introduce the electric light, or to spread education amongst the black fellows, the promoters either belong to Melbourne, or go there for their capital. The headquarters of nearly all the large commercial institutions which extend their operation beyond the limits of any one colony are to be found there. If you wish to transact business well and quickly, to organize a new enterprise--in short, to estimate and understand the trade of Australia, you must go to Melbourne and not to Sydney, and this in spite of the fact that Victoria is a small colony handicapped by heavy protectionist duties, whilst Sydney is, comparatively speaking, a free port, at the base of an enormous area. The actual production does not take place in Victoria, but it is in Melbourne that the money resulting from the productions of other colonies as well as of Victoria is turned over. It is Melbourne money chiefly that opens up new tracts of land for settlement in the interior of the continent, and Melbourne brains that find the outlets for fresh commerce in every direction. There is a bustle and life about Melbourne which you altogether miss in Sydney. The Melbourne man is always on the look-out for business, the Sydney man waits for business to come to him. The one is always in a hurry, the other takes life more easily. And as it is with business, so it is with pleasure.
