Book Australia Fair

Download or read book Australia Fair written by Hugh Stretton and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Australia’s leading thinkers draws on a lifetime of research, analysis and commonsense in his blueprint for making a better Australia. Hugh Stretton argues that it is possible to contrive full and fairly shared employment for everyone, to enable most households to own or rent adequate household space and obtain the capital they need to do the things they want to do. He argues that we can continue women’s progress to genuine equality at home and at work and reconcile it with parenting that elicits the best from and for our children. He shows that we can determine how best to transfer income to non-earning years. Finally, the book shows that we can fairly share the use of natural resources. Ambitious but practical, the book sets out a plan for achieving these goals.

Book Quarterly Essay 73 Australia Fair

Download or read book Quarterly Essay 73 Australia Fair written by Rebecca Huntley and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do Australians want most from their next government? In this vivid, grounded, surprising essay, Rebecca Huntley listens to the people and hears a call for change. Too often we focus on the angry, reactionary minority. But, Huntley shows, there is also a large progressive centre. For some time, a clear majority have been saying they want action – on climate and energy, on housing and inequality, on corporate donations and the corruption of democracy. Would a Shorten Labor government rise to this challenge? What can be learnt from the failures of past governments? Was marriage equality just the beginning? In Australia Fair, Rebecca Huntley reveals the state of the nation and makes the case for democratic renewal – should the next government heed the call. “Often the claim is made that our politics and politicians are poll-driven. This is, on the whole, bunkum. If polls were influential, we would have invested much more in renewable energy, maintained and even increased funding to the ABC, and made child care cheaper. We may already have made changes to negative gearing and moved towards adopting elements of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. We would have taken up the first iteration of the Gonski education reforms. These are some of the issues where a democratic majority comes together, a basic agreement crossing party lines.” —Rebecca Huntley, Australia Fair Rebecca Huntley is one of Australia’s leading social researchers. From 2006 until 2015, she was the director of the Mind & Mood Report, Australia’s longest-running social trends report. She is now head of Vox Populi research. Her most recent book is Still Lucky. She presents The History Listen on ABC Radio National.

Book Patterns of Exploitation

Download or read book Patterns of Exploitation written by Anna K. Boucher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With an estimated 164 million workers globally, migrant workers are an essential component of contemporary workplaces. Despite their number and indispensability in the global economy, these workers suffer workplace violations that range from underpayment of wages, to unsafe work conditions through to sexual assault and even industrial manslaughter. Patterns of Exploitation documents the bases for exploitation. It does this through a comparison of labor laws and practices in six labor law jurisdictions and four countries, over a twenty-year period: Australia, Canada (Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta), the United Kingdom (England) and the United States (California). Starting with a startling new database (the Migrant Worker Rights Database) of 907 court cases involving 1,912 migrants, this unprecedented study offers in-depth analysis of seven court cases to document individual migrant experiences. It draws upon 53 interviews with leading counsel (and other actors) on both sides of litigation to provide an assessment of the patterns of exploitation that emerge. The central factors informing these narratives are ethnicity, gender, occupational sector, visa status, trade union membership and enforcement policy. Yet, the key factor that explains variation across cases is the industrial relations systems of these four countries. This central finding emphasizes ongoing institutional resilience in labor market regulation, even within most-similar liberal market economies that these cases represent"--

Book Fair Enough

  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Fair Enough written by Elaine Thompson and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian self-image of a perfectly egalitarian society has always been fraught with paradox. We are all equal, yet racism, sexism and xenophobia have all flourished. We are a classless society, yet the cultural cringe exists. In this penetrating book, Dr. Elaine Thompson tackles many of the issues surrounding Australian egalitarianism: Did our egalitarian drive create a nation in which 'sameness' was so important that we did not see and cherish diversity? What of the accusation that egalitarianism cuts down tall poppies and undermines progress? In particular, this book explores the origins of political egalitarianism - the transformation from a culture which defined itself by white Britishness to one which cherishes multicultural diversity. Special emphasis is also placed on the economic, social and cultural positions of women, non-Anglo immigrants and indigenous people.

Book Nineteenth Century British Music Studies

Download or read book Nineteenth Century British Music Studies written by Peter Horton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected from papers given at the third biennial conference on Music in Nineteenth-Century Britain, this volume, in common with its two predecessors, reflects the interdisciplinary character of the topic. The introductory essay by Julian Rushton foregrounds some of the questions that are key to this area of study: what is the nineteenth century? what is British music? and did London influence the continent? The essays which follow are divided into broad thematic groups covering aspects of gender, church music, national identity, and local and national institutions. This collection illustrates that while nineteenth-century British music studies is still in its infancy as a field of research, it is one that is burgeoning and contributing to our understanding of British social and cultural life of the period.

Book Public Theology and the Challenge of Feminism

Download or read book Public Theology and the Challenge of Feminism written by Stephen Burns and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Theology is a rapidly growing international field of study which focuses on how Christian belief and practice engage with wider social issues. Yet, whilst the ultimate concern of public theology is the well-being of society, this body of theology has largely developed without integrating the thinking of feminist theology and its insights into womens' lives and experience. Public Theology and the Challenge of Feminism argues that public theology risks re-inscribing traditional constructs of public and private, civic and domestic, and uncritical notions of gender and the work and worth of people. The book brings together both theory and case material to expose how public theology has actively downplayed or ignored feminist perspectives and to reveal how constructive feminism can be for the future of public theology.
