Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australia as It Really Is in Its Life, Scenery,& Adventure The sadly-waning prospects of family affairs - a miserable necessity for retrenchment - the horrid bore of having at the age of twenty-one to begin to get my own living - and the difficulty of attaining that object in a community so thronged as England with fellow-competitors in the race for life - were among the most important considerations which directed my attention to the subject of Emigration. In the majority of similar cases ill health is, perhaps, the most fashionable motive to assign, and, indeed, I "enjoyed" enough of this to justify the customary plea; for England - moist, foggy, dear Old England! - does not possess precisely the climate best adapted for pulmonary predelictions; but, if the truth must be told, poverty! unpopular poverty! and the plebeian hope of being able to better my worldly condition, were the real moving causes which urged this important subject seriously upon my attention. Book excerpt: Skin Deep looks at the preoccupations of European-Australians in their encounters with Aboriginal women and the tropes, types, and perceptions that seeped into everyday settler-colonial thinking. Early erroneous and uninformed accounts of Aboriginal women and culture were repeated throughout various print forms and imagery, both in Australia and in Europe, with names, dates, and locations erased so that individual women came to be anonymized as 'gins' and 'lubras.' The book identifies and traces the various tropes used to typecast Aboriginal women, contributing to their lasting hold on the colonial imagination even after conflicting records emerged. The colonial archive itself, consisting largely of accounts by white men, is critiqued in the book. Construction of Aboriginal women's gender and sexuality was a form of colonial control, and Skin Deep shows how the industrialization of print was critical to this control, emerging as it did alongside colonial expansion. For nearly all settlers, typecasting Aboriginal women through name-calling and repetition of tropes sufficed to evoke an understanding that was surface-based and half-knowing: only skin deep. *** "Impressively researched, written, organized and presented...highly recommended for community and academic library Aboriginal Studies, Women's Studies, Australian Studies, and Colonial History reference collections." --Midwest Book Review, MBR Bookwatch: October 2016, Helen's Bookshelf [Subject: Cultural History, Aboriginal Studies, Women's Studies, Australian Studies, Colonial Studies]

Book excerpt: Flamboyant, cultured and refined, aristocracy is often seen as a national treasure. Lords of Misrule takes a different view and considers the role of an aristocracy behaving badly. This is a book about the political, social and moral failings of aristocracy and the ways in which they have featured in political rhetoric. Drawing on the views of critics of aristocracy, it explores the dark side of power without responsibility. Less 'patrician paragons' than dissolute and debauched debtors, the aristocrats featured here undermined, rather than augmented, the fabric of national life. For the first time, Lords of Misrule recaptures the views of those radicals and reformers who were prepared to contemplate a Britain without aristocrats.
