Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book brings together three different texts. First and foremost, it contains all of the material from the 1927 cookbook Aunt Sammy's Radio Recipes, produced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). But it also includes excerpts from the 1920s radio broadcasts that inspired the character of 'Aunt Sammy' and menus and recipes promoted by the USDA. Finally, my introduction and editorial comments throughout the book contain historical context to provide a scholarly perspective on USDA's cooking advice and radio listenership of Aunt Sammy's audiences"--Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aunt Sammy's Radio Recipes, Revised, (originally published in 1931) brings together 400 of the most popular recipes and 90 of the menus included in the Housekeeper's Chats. Immediately with the start of this radio service for women in 1926 came the demand for the recipes. Aunt Sammy herself was a character created by the U. S. Department of Agriculture Bureau of Home Economics and the Radio Service to be the 'wife' of Uncle Sam. Many women across the country 'played' Aunt Sammy at local radio stations when the show aired. By 1932 the radio show was on 194 stations, but Aunt Sammy faded out during the Great Depression. After 1934 the name 'Aunt Sammy' was no longer used. The radio show was renamed "Homemaker Chat" and that show was discontinued in 1946.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aunt Sammy came to life with the first radio broadcast of "Housekeeper's Chat" on October 4, 1926. The character of Aunt Sammy-wife of Uncle Sam-was created by the USDA Bureau of Home Economics and the Radio Service. Many women across the country played the part as they spoke into the microphones of local radio stations. The highlights of Aunt Sammy's show were the menus and recipes, but Aunt Sammy also talked about clothing, furniture, appliances, and other family and household matters. Aunt Sammy wasn't just a homebody, however. She commented on world affairs, reported the latest fads, and told jokes. The talk moved easily from one subject to another, always natural and entertaining as well as informative. This 50th anniversary recipe collection includes recipes from current publications and a selection of recipes from the first edition of "Aunt Sammy's Radio Recipes." All of these recipes have been retested in the laboratory and found acceptable by taste panels.

Book Good and Cheap

  • Author : Leanne Brown

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A perfect and irresistible idea: A cookbook filled with delicious, healthful recipes created for everyone on a tight budget. While studying food policy as a master’s candidate at NYU, Leanne Brown asked a simple yet critical question: How well can a person eat on the $4 a day given by SNAP, the U.S. government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program informally known as food stamps? The answer is surprisingly well: Broiled Tilapia with Lime, Spicy Pulled Pork, Green Chile and Cheddar Quesadillas, Vegetable Jambalaya, Beet and Chickpea Salad—even desserts like Coconut Chocolate Cookies and Peach Coffee Cake. In addition to creating nutritious recipes that maximize every ingredient and use economical cooking methods, Ms. Brown gives tips on shopping; on creating pantry basics; on mastering certain staples—pizza dough, flour tortillas—and saucy extras that make everything taste better, like spice oil and tzatziki; and how to make fundamentally smart, healthful food choices. The idea for Good and Cheap is already proving itself. The author launched a Kickstarter campaign to self-publish and fund the buy one/give one model. Hundreds of thousands of viewers watched her video and donated $145,000, and national media are paying attention. Even high-profile chefs and food writers have taken note—like Mark Bittman, who retweeted the link to the campaign; Francis Lam, who called it “Terrific!”; and Michael Pollan, who cited it as a “cool kickstarter.” In the same way that TOMS turned inexpensive, stylish shoes into a larger do-good movement, Good and Cheap is poised to become a cookbook that every food lover with a conscience will embrace.

Book Always Put in a Recipe and Other Tips for Living from Iowa s Best Known Homemaker

Download or read book Always Put in a Recipe and Other Tips for Living from Iowa s Best Known Homemaker written by Evelyn Birkby and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1949, Iowa farm wife Evelyn Birkby began to write a weekly column entitled “Up a Country Lane” for the Shenandoah Evening Sentinel, now called the Valley News. Sixty-three years, one Royal typewriter, and five computers later, she is still creating a weekly record of the lives and interests of her family, friends, and neighbors. Her perceptive, closely observed columns provide a multigenerational biography of rural and small-town life in the Midwest over decades of change. Now she has sifted through thousands of columns to give us her favorites, guaranteed to delight her many longtime and newfound fans. Evelyn begins with her very first column, whose focus on the Christmas box prepared by a companionable group of farm wives, the constant hard work of farming, and an encounter with an elderly stranger over a yard of red gingham sets the tone for future columns. Optimistic even in the wake of sorrow, generous-spirited but not smug, humorous but not folksy, wise but not preachy, Evelyn welcomes the adventures and connections that each new day brings, and she masterfully shares them with her readers. Tales of separating cream on the back porch at Cottonwood Farm, raising a teddy bear of a puppy in addition to a menagerie of other animals, surviving an endless procession of Cub and Boy Scouts, appreciating a little boy’s need to take his toy tractor to church, blowing out eggs to make an Easter egg tree, shopping for bargains on the day before Christmas, camping in a converted Model T “house car,” and adjusting to the fact of one’s tenth decade of existence all merge to form a world composed of kindness and wisdom with just enough humor to keep it grounded. Recipes for such fare as Evelyn’s signature Hay Hand Rolls prove that the young woman who was daunted by her editor’s advice to “put in a recipe every week” became a talented cook. Each of the more than eighty columns in this warmhearted collection celebrates not a bygone era tinged with sentimentality but a continuing tradition of neighborliness, Midwest-nice and Midwest-sensible.
