Book Auditory Late Response Versus 40 Hz Auditory Steady State Response

Download or read book Auditory Late Response Versus 40 Hz Auditory Steady State Response written by Yei Ju Bella Kim and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the use of the newest generation multiple auditory steady state responses (ASSRs) and auditory late responses (ALRs) in objective hearing threshold estimation in awake adults. A within-subject performance comparison between the 40 Hz ASSR and the ALR was conducted in 25 participants. Each participant was assessed monaurally using the Interacoustics Eclipse EP25. The test ear and order of testing were counterbalanced across participants. Stimuli centred at four test frequencies: 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz were presented via Eartone 3ATM insert earphones. The 40 Hz multiple ASSR used the narrowband (NB) CE-Chirp©, whilst the ALR used the long duration (80 ms) tone bursts. Note that for the ALR, 500 and 2000 Hz were prioritised, with the inclusion of 1000 and 4000 Hz if time and participant status permitted. The total test time for the 40 Hz ASSR to obtain a four-point audiogram was obtained by the time recorded on the software. The ALR test time was calculated in two forms: “actual” and “estimated”. The “actual” test time was calculated using the number of sweeps recorded for obtaining two frequencies (500 and 2000 Hz). The “estimated” time to obtain a four-point audiogram was calculated by doubling the “actual” time. Relative accuracy in estimating the behavioural audiogram was determined by comparing thresholds from each AEP measure. Results indicated comparable threshold estimates for 500 Hz, but statistically significantly lower (p

Book Human Auditory Evoked Potentials

Download or read book Human Auditory Evoked Potentials written by Terence W. Picton and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews how we can record the human brain's response to sounds, and how we can use these recordings to assess hearing. These recordings are used in many different clinical situations--the identification of hearing impairment in newborn infants, the detection of tumors on the auditory nerve, the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. As well they are used to investigate how the brain is able to hear--how we can attend to particular conversations at a cocktail party and ignore others, how we learn to understand the language we are exposed to, why we have difficulty hearing when we grow old. This book is written by a single author with wide experience in all aspects of these recordings. The content is complete in terms of the essentials. The style is clear; equations are absent and figures are multiple. The intent of the book is to make learning enjoyable and meaningful. Allusions are made to fields beyond the ear, and the clinical importance of the phenomena is always considered.

Book Understanding Psychology as a Science

Download or read book Understanding Psychology as a Science written by Zoltan Dienes and published by Red Globe Press. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we objectively define categories of truth in scientific thinking? How can we reliably measure the results of research? In this ground-breaking text, Dienes undertakes a comprehensive historical analysis of the dominant schools of thought, key theories and influential thinkers that have progressed the foundational principles and characteristics that typify scientific research methodology today. This book delivers a masterfully simple, 'though not simplistic', introduction to the core arguments surrounding Popper, Kuhn and Lakatos, Fisher and Royall, Neyman and Pearson and Bayes. Subsequently, this book clarifies the prevalent misconceptions that surround such theoretical perspectives in psychology today, providing an especially accessible critique for student readers. This book launches an informative inquiry into the methods by which psychologists throughout history have arrived at the conclusions of research, equipping readers with the knowledge to accurately design and evaluate their own research and gain confidence in critiquing results in psychology research. Particular attention is given to understanding methods of measuring the falsifiability of statements, probabilities and the differing views on statistical inference. An illuminating book for any undergraduate psychology student taking courses in critical thinking, research methods, BPS's core area 'conceptual and historical issues' as well as those studying masters, phd's and experienced researchers.

Book Hearing Loss

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2004-12-17
  • ISBN : 0309092965
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Hearing Loss written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-12-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

Book Accuracy of 40 Hz Automated and Sinusoidal ASSR and Tone burst ABR Thresholds in Normal hearing Adults Using Kalman weighted Filtering

Download or read book Accuracy of 40 Hz Automated and Sinusoidal ASSR and Tone burst ABR Thresholds in Normal hearing Adults Using Kalman weighted Filtering written by Uzma Shaheen Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and auditory steady state responses (ASSR) are useful for estimating hearing in difficult-to-test populations. For these populations, Kalman-weighted filtering and in-situ pre-amplification can be advantageous for ABR recordings, but little is known about the accuracy of 40-Hz sinusoidal ASSR (sASSR) thresholds using these techniques. The primary aims of this study were to determine the accuracy of: a) 40-Hz sASSR thresholds compared to both toneburst-ABR and behavioral thresholds; and b) automated ASSR (aASSR) in a semi-alert population. Behavioral and electrophysiological thresholds for 500, 2000 and 4000 Hz TB and narrow-band chirp stimuli were obtained using both 2000 and 4000 equivalent sweeps. With 4000 sweeps, significantly better thresholds were obtained for sASSR than TB-ABR for 500 Hz only. With 2000 sweeps, significantly better thresholds were obtained for TB-ABR than for sASSR for 4000 Hz only. 4000 sweep findings demonstrate that 40-Hz sASSR is useful for estimating low-frequency hearing with adequate averaging, whereas 2000 sweep findings suggest sASSR thresholds may be dependent upon response averaging. Multi-frequency screening of aASSR yielded a 61% passing rate using a 20 dB HL stopping level. These findings have clinical applications: a) 40-Hz sASSR may be helpful for low frequency thresholds; b) 40-Hz aASSR multi-frequency screening may be useful, although thresholds should be normed to behavioral thresholds for best results.

Book Mechanisms and Dynamics of the Human Auditory Steady state Response

Download or read book Mechanisms and Dynamics of the Human Auditory Steady state Response written by Daniel J. Bosnyak and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiment 1 investigated how auditory evoked potentials change as stimulus rate increases from the transient to the steady state range. Only the 13 Hz response-produced a frequency-amplitude characteristic with a prominent peak in response amplitude at 40 Hz. A new signal processing procedure, based on the Hotelling T2 statistic but applied in a procedure similar to a spectrogram, was used to show dynamics in the steady-state response which were not observable in the time-domain averages.

Book Slow Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials and Auditory Steady state Evoked Responses in Adults Exposed to Occupational Noise

Download or read book Slow Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials and Auditory Steady state Evoked Responses in Adults Exposed to Occupational Noise written by Leigh Biagio and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In individuals claiming compensation for occupational noise induced hearing loss, a population with a high incidence of nonorganic hearing loss, a reliable and valid behavioural pure tone (PT) threshold is not always achievable. Recent studies have compared the accuracy of behavioural PT threshold estimation using the slow cortical auditory evoked potentials (SCAEP) and auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) but there is no consensus regarding recommended technique. A review of the literature indicated that no comparison has been completed on the use of SCAEP and a single frequency ASSR technique. A research project was therefore initiated with the aim of comparing the clinical effectiveness (accuracy) and clinical efficiency (time required) of SCAEP and ASSR for behavioural PT threshold estimation in adults exposed to occupational noise. Adult participants were divided into a group with normal hearing (behavioural PT thresholds
