Book The Archive Effect

Download or read book The Archive Effect written by Jaimie Baron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archive Effect: Found Footage and the Audiovisual Experience of History examines the problems of representation inherent in the appropriation of archival film and video footage for historical purposes. Baron analyses the way in which the meanings of archival documents are modified when they are placed in new texts and contexts, constructing the viewer’s experience of and relationship to the past they portray. Rethinking the notion of the archival document in terms of its reception and the spectatorial experiences it generates, she explores the ‘archive effect’ as it is produced across the genres of documentary, mockumentary, experimental, and fiction films. This engaging work discusses how, for better or for worse, the archive effect is mobilized to create new histories, alternative histories, and misreadings of history. The book covers a multitude of contemporary cultural artefacts including fiction films like Zelig, Forrest Gump and JFK, mockumentaries such as The Blair Witch Project and Forgotten Silver, documentaries like Standard Operating Procedure and Grizzly Man, and videogames like Call of Duty: World at War. In addition, she examines the works of many experimental filmmakers including those of Péter Forgács, Adele Horne, Bill Morrison, Cheryl Dunye, and Natalie Bookchin.

Book Digital Audiovisual Archives

Download or read book Digital Audiovisual Archives written by Peter Stockinger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, huge quantities of digital audiovisual resources are already available – everywhere and at any time – through Web portals, online archives and libraries, and video blogs. One central question with respect to this huge amount of audiovisual data is how they can be used in specific (social, pedagogical, etc.) contexts and what are their potential interest for target groups (communities, professionals, students, researchers, etc.). This book examines the question of the (creative) exploitation of digital audiovisual archives from a theoretical, methodological, technical and practical point of view, especially in three main directions of work: - The repurposing and republishing of existing audiovisual data. - The building of community-centric audiovisual archives. - The use of digital social media and Web 2 technology for the diffusion and sharing of audiovisual content. This book presents a series of concrete examples of creative uses of digital audiovisual corpora for education, research and cultural heritage preservation and valorization.

Book Introduction to Audiovisual Archives

Download or read book Introduction to Audiovisual Archives written by Peter Stockinger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, audiovisual archives and libraries have become very popular especially in the field of collecting, preserving and transmitting cultural heritage. However, the data from these archives or libraries – videos, images, sound tracks, etc. – constitute as such only potential cognitive resources for a given public (or "target community"). They have to undergo more or less significant qualitative transformations in order to become user- or community-relevant intellectual goods. These qualitative transformations are performed through a series of concrete operations such as: audiovisual text segmentation, content description and indexing, pragmatic profiling, translation, etc. These and other operations constitute what we call the semiotic turn in dealing with digital (audiovisual) texts, corpora of texts or even entire (audiovisual) archives and libraries. They demonstrate practically and theoretically the well-known "from data to meta-data" or "from (simple) information to (relevant) knowledge" problem – a problem that obviously directly influences the effective use, the social impact and relevancy and therefore also the future of digital knowledge archives. It constitutes, indeed, the heart of a diversity of important R&D programs and projects all over the world.

Book Archives for the Future

Download or read book Archives for the Future written by Anthony Seeger and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is based on the results of a workshop for an international group of administrators of research-based archives held near New Delhi in December 1999, the aim of which was to bring together archivists from audio and visual archives in industrializing countries, principally from the Southern Hemisphere, which have a relatively recent history of audiovisual archives; to take concerns of audiovisual archives outside the national and regional boundaries that so often define these archives; and to focus on audiovisual archives that document musical and folklore traditions and thus those which are involved with ethnomusicology. Pooling the experience of participants from Austria, Australia, China, Cuba, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, The Philippines, South Africa, Sudan and the United States, the volume will be of interest to cultural workers both as an introductory textbook in ethnomusicology courses and as a book for specialists. The book begins with a theoretical introduction including general observations on archives, a discussion of the principal points in the participant papers, a description of the workshop itself and how the process of the workshop has been transformed into this volume. Section One deals with archive structure and operations, including a chapter on recording technology for audio archives which begins with a paper by the world-renowned expert in technology for audiovisual archives, Dr Dietrich Schüller, Director of the Vienna Phonogramm-Archiv, Austria, the oldest such archive in the world and one on issues of copyright and ethics. Section Two consists of the participants papers. The volume also includes useful material such as a bibliography of major resources on audiovisual archives and a website list of the most important professional organizations and archive sites. Anthony Seeger is Professor of Ethnomusicology at University of California at Los Angeles. He has been Director of the Archives of Traditional Music, University of Indiana and Director of Smithsonian Folkways recordings and the Curator of the archives. Book Physical Characteristics of Early Films as Aids to Identification

Download or read book Physical Characteristics of Early Films as Aids to Identification written by Camille Bolt-Wellens and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any archivists who have held a piece of fi lm in their hands, wondering how to go about identifying it, recognize the true value of fi lm preservationist Harold Brown's work. In 1967 Brown delivered a pioneering lecture on the identification of early films at the annual Congress of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) in East Berlin. Years of working with Britain's National Film Archive collections, and the close examination of thousands of nitrate prints of the silent period, made Brown a leading authority on early fi lm identification, and an unsurpassed model of methodological consciousness in the archival field. In 1990, FIAF published Brown's Physical Characteristics of Early Films as Aids to Identification, an updated version and a continuation of his 1967 lecture. This publication has long been archivists' trusted companion, constituting a concentrated encyclopedia on all the information that can be discovered or verified through aspects of the fi lm other than the actual projected image – such as perforation shapes; embossed and punched marks; stock manufacturers' and producers' edge marks; frame characteristics; title styles; and production serial numbers. It also included essays on key individual production companies of the silent era. Over the last 30 years, this manual – a basic typewritten 100-page volume (including 20 pages of black & white illustrations), with its easily recognizable red cover – has been an invaluable reference for fi lm archivists and scholars. However, as Brown himself acknowledged in the 1990 edition, the manual was far from definitive. Camille Blot-Wellens, the editor of this new, expanded edition of Brown's 1990 book, belongs to the new generation of researchers who have used Physical Characteristics extensively in their work and have gathered considerable new information on the subject. This new edition is the result of a project she initiated in 2014 with FIAF's support. Brown's original text is now augmented with new original research on key fi lm manufacturers and producers by Camille Bolt-Wellens and other leading archivists and researchers in the field. Richly illustrated (the book contains over 900 images, including 125 in full color), this new 336-page edition of Harold Brown's seminal manual will be welcomed by many, and will no doubt become a must-have working tool for many in the fi lm archiving and academic fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of articles written by the author in the past two decades shows a lot of issues, developments, and paradoxes that mount up to some real memories of virtual documents. Looking back, each of the articles was motivated by a conflict the author experienced. All articles were trying to answer questions. The succession from one perspective to another, from one community to another, also indicates that some problems were grown out by just ignoring them, directly solved by taking action, or by changing conditions through advanced technology. However, the most sensitive sections of these articles follow the gaze of an observer who is incurably interested in cultural and social aspects of the fact that the accumulation of knowledge through sound and audio-visual documents is crucial to the survival of human communities and their environment. This approach is itself brought up through the conflict between steadily progressing technologies and their application in still slowly learning societies. Gisa Jähnichen, ecomusicologist, currently working at Shanghai Conservatory of Music is an IASA ambassador engaged in audiovisual archiving around the globe, especially in Asia.
