C'est sûr qu'il nous faudra passer par les tribulations auparavant, mais une chose est certaine pour moi, j'ai très hâte que le mal soit éliminé, que le diable soit enchainé. La vérité nous ouvre les portes du royaume des cieux.

Everywhere, performance shapes the lives of people and organizations according to its logic and demands. The quest for performance has spread to societies worldwide; it has become of central importance for our perception of our activities and our understanding of the world. Such importance calls for reflection within the context of organizations. First, all important social processes are strongly affected by organizations. Second, performance holds a commanding position in organizations. In Stories of Achievements, Herve Corvellec explains performance as a matter of telling, recounting, and communicating an organization's actions or the results of those actions. He describes how organizations work with the notion of performance and examines its connections with efficiency and competition. Corvellec begins with an assessment of management literature, discussing the various ways different professions define performance. What is considered to be performance in one profession may be at odds with its definition in another. In keeping with the practice of the Zürich James Joyce Foundation workshops, from one of which, over Easter 1992, the collection developed, many essays emphasize the local temporal textures of Finnegans Wake through close readings of individual passages. However, this does not preclude fruitful interaction with wider contexts and theoretical concerns. Two articles are detailed studies of social and political contemporary contexts with which Joyce's last work was in dialogue. Three more explore philosophical, psychological and scientific theories of time which Joyce exploited and transformed in his text. Two essays relate Finnegans Wake to discussions of time in French feminist and deconstructive theory: and finally, four essays concentrate on the temporality of composition - two apiece on each of the chronology of Joyce's early note-taking and draft processes. The collection should prove interesting to all readers and critics of Joyce as well as to critics concerned with the problem of historicizing and contextualising the temporally disruptive texts of high modernism and early postmodernism.

For the first time this assumption is put to the test using extensive fieldwork carried out in an international news agency and a corpus of translated news agency dispatches. The linguistic analysis of three syntactic structures in the translations is complemented by an investigation of the effects of a range of factors including, most notably, the speed at which the translation is carried out. The analysis sheds new light on the ways in which news translation could lead to syntactic borrowing in French, and by extension, in other languages.
