Book Counselors Attributions of Blame Toward Female Survivors of Battering

Download or read book Counselors Attributions of Blame Toward Female Survivors of Battering written by Lori E. Notestine and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a social problem that affects roughly 5.3 million women in the U.S. each year, accounts for 1,300 deaths, and often results in a number of physical and mental health consequences. Many women seek counseling as a way to find relief from the symptoms of the abuse they have endured. Unfortunately, women often find the available resources to be inadequate or worse, damaging. Misdiagnosis, non-violent re-victimization, and even blame are reactions women have faced from counselors. Gender role attitudes and ambivalent sexism are two factors shown to contribute to attributions of blame toward women who have been battered, but have not been examined among counselors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to test a conceptual framework of attributions, Weiner's (1980) Model of Motivated Behavior, with the goal of identifying the impact of counselors' values and beliefs about gender roles and ambivalent sexism on their attributions toward women who have experienced battering, while addressing the methodological limitations present in previous studies. A sample of 122 counselors from 6 states across the U.S. responded to an electronic survey. The Correlation Matrix indicated that the relationships among study variables did exist in the expected directions. Gender role attitudes and ambivalent sexism accounted for 16% of the variance in attributions of blame, providing evidence that these variables are moderate predictors of blame attributions. Additional analyses suggested that male participants responded in a socially desirable manner to all measures, indicating that levels of blame may have been greater had these participants responded in kind with their actual beliefs. This study highlights the key roles of gender role attitudes and ambivalent sexism in attributions of blame and emphasizes the importance of assessing for social desirability. The findings provide direction for future research and practical implications for counselors and counselor educators."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Download or read book Gender and Judging written by Ulrike Schultz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does gender make a difference to the way the judiciary works and should work? Or is gender-blindness a built-in prerequisite of judicial objectivity? If gender does make a difference, how might this be defined? These are the key questions posed in this collection of essays, by some 30 authors from the following countries; Argentina, Cambodia, Canada, England, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Kenya, the Netherlands, the Philippines, South Africa, Switzerland, Syria and the United States. The contributions draw on various theoretical approaches, including gender, feminist and sociological theories. The book's pressing topicality is underlined by the fact that well into the modern era male opposition to women's admission to, and progress within, the judicial profession has been largely based on the argument that their very gender programmes women to show empathy, partiality and gendered prejudice - in short essential qualities running directly counter to the need for judicial objectivity. It took until the last century for women to begin to break down such seemingly insurmountable barriers. And even now, there are a number of countries where even this first step is still waiting to happen. In all of them, there remains a more or less pronounced glass ceiling to women's judicial careers.

Book Domestic Violence Causes and Cures and Anger Management

Download or read book Domestic Violence Causes and Cures and Anger Management written by Willis C. Newman and published by Willis Newman. This book was released on 2010-05-12 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is two books put together as one. The first part deals with the problem of domestic violence. Domestic violence is wide spread, wreaks havoc on families and sometimes leads to the death of a loved one. And, it goes both ways! Both men and women can be abusers or victims. Often family friends feel helpless. Questions arise. How can we help the victim when she/he does not seem to want to leave the relationship? Is there hope for the perpetrators? Can they change? We explain what domestic violence is, the causes, the consequences, suggested treatment and help for both perpetrators and victims, and a biblical view of marriage. In part two, we tackle the subject of anger management. We will define anger and its core dynamics, determine how to recognize it, see that anger is a choice we can manage, and identify the cycle of anger. We will identify the major mental distortions that fuel anger, and expand on practical strategies to manage anger. This book is born out of lessons learned from personal experiences, and Willis' extensive research, years of experience in counseling people involved in domestic violence situations and teaching anger management. If you are involved in an abusive relationship, and/or have anger issues, DON'T SET THIS BOOK ASIDE! You can find hope and help here. This book will change your life!
