Book Identifying business opportunities for shipping entrepreneurs A sequence of strategic and operational considerations

Download or read book Identifying business opportunities for shipping entrepreneurs A sequence of strategic and operational considerations written by Hans-Christian Stockfisch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 2,0, Hamburg School of Business Administration gGmbH (Maritime and Logistics - HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration), course: MBA Shipping, language: English, abstract: This thesis develops a methodology that gives guidance through the process of identifying a business opportunity in shipping by spotting an emerging niche in the market and setting up a corresponding business model to establish a promising company. The focus lies on shipping entrepreneurs, who are entirely dependent on investment capital and therefore have to be well prepared to attract investors. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is introductory, defines the basic terminology and sets assumptions for the further analysis. Chapter Two explores the signals, indicating emerging niches in the market, covering the first part of identifying a business opportunity. Chapter Three and Four cover the second part of the identification process, discussing considerations regarding the strategic framework as well as the operational management of the startup. Conclusions are drawn in chapter Five. The key findings are that the financial and corporate structure of the business model is mutually dependent. Therefore a holistic approach of the venture must be taken into account to successfully identify and approach a business opportunity. Furthermore it is found that the entrepreneurs have to integrate a prudent risk management to attract investors and to prepare the company for present and future challenges. This should be complemented by a proactive and transparent style of management. However, there is no unique all-in-one solution for the establishment of a new company as every business case is different and must be conducted individually. Nevertheless the tools and considerations presented in this thesis offer practical guidance and lower risks and uncertainties in the decision-making processes of the shipping-entrepreneurs.

Book Capital Allocation and Ownership Concentration in the Shipping Industry

Download or read book Capital Allocation and Ownership Concentration in the Shipping Industry written by Wolfgang Drobetz and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We measure the sensitivity of investment to changes in investment opportunities in the shipping industry and test whether this relation is moderated by ownership concentration. For a sample of 126 globally listed shipping firms, we find that investment in commercial shipping follows freight rates, a measure of the potential income stream from owning a vessel. Ownership concentration, measured as the ownership stake of the largest shareholder, reinforces the positive effect of freight rates on investment, indicating a higher relative efficiency of capital allocation. The positive impact ownership has on the investment-freight rate sensitivity also translates into higher firm value. An analysis of investor identity shows that our results are driven by the group of firms where the largest owner is a financial investor, who is usually more focused on shareholder value maximization.

  • Author : Robert F. Dalzell

Download or read book Enterprising Elite written by Robert F. Dalzell and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other single group of individuals, the Boston Associates were responsible for the sweeping economic transformation that occurred in New England between 1815 and 1861. Through the use of the corporate form, they established an extensive network of modern business enterprises that were among the largest of the time. Their most notable achievement was the development of the Waltham-Lowell system in the textile industry, but they were also active in transportation, banking, and insurance, and at the same time played a major role in philanthropy and politics. Evaluating each of these efforts in turn and placing the Associates in the context of the society and culture that produced them, the author convincingly explains the complex motives that led the group to undertake initiatives on so many different fronts. Dalzell shows that men like Francis Cabot Lowell, Nathan Appleton, and Amos and Abbott Lawrence are best understood as transitional figures. Although they used modern methods when it suited their interest, they were most concerned with protecting the positions they had already won at the top of a traditional social order. Thus, for all the innovations they sponsored, their commitment to change remained both partial and highly selective. And while something very like an industrial revolution did occur in New England during the nineteenth century, paradoxically the Associates neither sought nor welcomed it. On the contrary, as time passed they became increasingly preoccupied with combating the forces of change. In addition to the light it sheds on a crucial chapter of business history, this gracefully written study offers fresh insights into the role and attitudes of elites during the period. Furthermore it contradicts some of the prevailing thought about entrepreneurial behavior in the early phases of industrialization in America.

Book Attracting Investment in Bangladesh Sectoral Analyses

Download or read book Attracting Investment in Bangladesh Sectoral Analyses written by Sanjay Kathuria and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is volume 3 of a three-volume publication on Bangladesh’s trade prospects. Bangladesh’s ambition is to build on its very solid growth and poverty reduction achievements, and accelerate growth to become a middle income country by 2021, and share prosperity more widely amongst its citizens. This includes one of its greatest development challenges: to provide gainful employment to the over 2 million people that will join the labor force each year over the next decade. Moreover, only 54.1 million of its 94 million working age people are employed. Bangladesh needs to use its labor endowment even more intensively to increase growth and, in turn, to absorb the incoming labor. The Diagnostic Trade Integration Study identifies the following actions centered around four pillars to sustain and accelerate export growth: (1) breaking into new markets through a) better trade logistics to reduce delivery lags ; as world markets become more competitive and newer products demand shorter lead times, to generate new sources of competitiveness and thereby enable market diversification; and b) better exploitation of regional trading opportunities in nearby growing and dynamic markets, especially East and South Asia; (2) breaking into new products through a) more neutral and rational trade policy and taxation and bonded warehouse schemes; b) concerted efforts to spur domestic investment and attract foreign direct investment, to contribute to export promotion and diversification, including by easing the energy and land constraints; and c) strategic development and promotion of services trade; (3) improving worker and consumer welfare by a) improving skills and literacy; b) implementing labor and work safety guidelines; and c) making safety nets more effective in dealing with trade shocks; and (4) building a supportive environment, including a) sustaining sound macroeconomic fundamentals; and b) strengthening the institutional capacity for strategic policy making aimed at the objective of international competitiveness to help bring focus and coherence to the government’s reform efforts. This third volume provides in-depth analysis of eight different manufacturing and services sectors of the Bangladeshi economy, which help to illustrate the thematic analysis of volume 2 and ground it in sector experiences. Besides pointing to cross-cutting themes, the analysis also highlights some specific issues and actions that could help relieve constraints to faster export growth in these sectors.
