Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes toward violence and reasons for living in adolescents with high, moderate, and low self-esteem. An attitudes toward violence quesstionaire was devised for the purposes of this study. Self-esteem was assessed using the shortened version of Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (SES). The Brief Reasons for Living Inventory was utilized to assess adaptive characteristics. The independent variables were gender and self-esteem. The dependent variables were total attitudes toward violence score and total reasons for living score. Participants included 138 boys and 95 girls, ages 11 to 15 years old (M = 13.3) from a city middle school. A 2 (gender) X 3 (level of self-esteem) analysis of variance with unequal cell sizes was used to test for main and interaction effects. The significance level was set at the .05 level. For the dependent variable attitudes toward violence, main effects were found for both gender and self-esteem. For the dependent variable reasons for living, a main effect was found for self-esteem but not for gender. No interaction effects were found. An inverse relationship was identified between violence and reasons for living. Significant relationships between some of the subscales of the RFL and the dependent variables were non-hypothesized findings. Maleness and low self-esteem emerged as predictors for more accepting attitudes toward violence. Low self-esteem was significantly related to fewer reasons for living. Higher scores on the following RFL subscales were related to high self-esteem and more reasons for living: Responsibility to Family, Survival and Coping Beliefs. The Religious and Moral Beliefs subscale was also related to anti-violent attitudes. Implications of findings, limitations, of the study, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book uses life-course longitudinal data collected from a national probability sample of respondents over a span of nearly three decades to examine the impact of multiple forms of exposure to violence in adolescence on a broad range of outcomes in adulthood. The forms of adolescent exposure to violence include general violence victimization, parental physical abuse, witnessing parental violence, and exposure to neighborhood violence. The adult outcomes include adult educational attainment, employment, marital status, income and wealth, mental health, life satisfaction, illicit and problem substance use, general violence victimization and perpetration, intimate partner violence victimization and perpetration, and arrest. The results demonstrate the complex pattern of how the different forms of exposure to violence in adolescence have varying effects on different types of adult outcomes, and matter differently for females and males. Based on these results, implications for theory, policy, and future research are considered.
