Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the Theory of Sunspots, held in Cambridge, England, 22-27 September 1991. The idea of holding this Workshop first arose during the Solar Optical Telescope work shop on Theoretical Problems in High-Resolution Solar Physics in Munich in 1985. At that meeting, separate discussion groups were formed to consider specific topics in solar physics. The discussion group on sunspots recommended that there be a meeting devoted to theoretical problems associated with sunspots, the motivation being the consensus that theory seemed to lag behind the observational evidence in our quest for a satisfactory un derstanding of the physics of sunspots. This recommendation was warmly received and the two of us were designated to organize the Workshop. Although the Workshop eventually took place later than originally envisioned, the de lay turned out to be fortunate and the timing of the Workshop was ideal for a number of reasons. There have been remarkable improvements in high-resolution observations of sunspots in the past few years, and many important new observational results were pre sented for the first time at this Workshop (by groups working at the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratories, the Swedish and German telescopes in the Canary Islands, and the V. S. National Solar Observatory). Vector magnetographs and Stokes polarimetry have at last given us reliable measurements of the vector magnetic fields in sunspots.

Book excerpt: The report reviews recent theoretical and observational developments in sunspot physics. It concentrates especially on the recent discoveries of rapid changes in sunspots, most of them oscillatory, and their connection with Alfven waves generated in spots.

Download or read book Solar Magnetic Fields written by Manfred Schüssler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-06-16 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are large-scale magnetic fields generated in the Sun in self-excited dynamo processes? And how are magnetic structures spontaneously formed in the Sun and how do they interact with the convective flows, storage and release of magnetic energy? These are just several of the fundamental questions answered in this timely review of our understanding of solar magnetic fields. This volume collects together review articles and research papers from an international conference, held in Freiburg, Germany, dedicated to the study of magnetic fields in the Sun. From large-scale patterns and global dynamo action to tiny flux tubes, from the overshoot layer below the convection zone up to the corona, and from instrumental problems and theoretical methods to the latest ground-based and satellite observations, this volume provides an essential review of our knowledge to date for graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: When we first approached some colleagues allover the world to sound them about a volume dedicated to Professor John Xanthakis on the occasion of completing twenty-five years of scientific activities as fellow of the National Academy of Athens, any possible doubts as to the feasibility of the project were quickly dispelled by their warm and encouraging response. In a short time 50 authors from 15 countries, coming from a wide range of Professor Xanthakis' immediate colleagues, pupils and friends joined to produce the 36 contributions included in this volume. Some of those who where originally approached found themselves un able to contribute, because of the time-limit necessarily imposed. Happi ly, they were only few in number, and we should like to record our grat itude to them for their good wishes for the success of the venture. Their warm words were among the many sources of inspiring encouragement extended to us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 5 is a collection of papers that deals with the Zodiacal light, three dimensional periodic oscillations, the secular variation of mass, and the evolution of binary systems. Some papers discuss the periodicity of the sunspot groups, as well as compact and dispersed cosmic matter. One paper notes that the brightness of the zodiacal light continues to increase right up to the limb of the Sun, where it merges with parts of the solar corona. Another paper discusses analytically and numerically the three families of three-dimensional motions where the members of each family pass very close to one of three equilibrium points. One paper describes the loss of mass in the Sun as being (1) caused by electromagnetic or corpuscular radiation that occurs at a slow rate, or (2) by an explosion of a nova or supernova. One paper examines the periodicity of solar activities, the physical conditions of sunspots, chromospheric flares, prominence, and magnetic fields. The paper notes that different periodicity laws govern the formation frequency and importance of spot groups. The behavior of spot groups also depends on the periodicity process of solar activity. The collection can prove valuable for astro-physicists, astronomers, geochemists, and mathematicians whose works involve cosmology and astronomy.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K. O. KIEPENHEUER ( Fraunhofer Institut, Freiburg i. Br., Germany) The present symposium, to my knowledge the largest ever held in the field of solar research (170 astronomers from 21 countries) was held in the building of the Hun garian Academy of Sciences in Budapest from September 4 to 8, 1967. It was the 35th symposium organized and sponsored by the International Astronomical Union. The majority of participants were financedfrom national sources. The Organizing Commit tee consisted of K. O. Kiepenheuer (Chairman), L. Davis, L. Dezso (Local Organizer), A.D. Fokker, R. Michard, A.B. Severny, H.J. Smith, Z. Svestka, and H. Tanaka. In order to ensure prompt publication, the manuscripts had to be supplied by the authors 1 month after the meeting. The discussions have been recorded on tape. Their reproduction in this book, however, is based almost completely on the contributors' writing down their comments and questions on the spot. Two special projects have been reported and discussed shortly during the sym posium: The world wide project 'Cooperative Study of Solar Active Regions' (CSSAR) organized by Dr. R. Michard, under the auspices of the IAU, which has put at the disposal of our solar community a precious observing material on Active Regions over a period of 6 months.

Book excerpt: “The polarization study of celestial objects is a valuable part of optical astronomy, and the author has done exceptionally well in bringing together contributions treating all aspects of the polarimetry field. . . . The first section contains a fine introduction and an excellent and definitive history of the subject. . . . The volume is well illustrated. . . . Highly recommended.”—Choice “The high quality of this book is clearly due to strict editorial attention to each paper and the discussions. Gehrels’s book will surely stand for many years as the fundamental reference source for polarization studies in astronomy as well as in atmospheric physics.”—Journal of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers
