The contributions explore how these cities developed landscapes full of civic memory and ritual, saw commercial priorities transforming the urban environment, and began to expand signifi cantly beyond their wall circuits. These interrelated developments not only changed how cities looked and could be experienced, but they also affected the functioning of the urban community and together contributed to keeping increasingly complex urban communities socially cohesive. By focusing on the transformation of urban landscapes in the Late Republican and Imperial periods, the volume adds a new, explicitly historical angle to current debates about urban space in Roman studies. Book excerpt: Modern scholarship dealing with the economy of the ancient world has developed rapidly in recent decades. Studies of ancient economic structures and history have in many respects achieve standards as a discipline comparable to those of economic history, using models and scenarios exactly as it is frequently seen in studies of later periods with better sources. The best example is perhaps the historical demography of Roman Italy. It was a marginal field of research until the early 1990s, but is now one of the key subjects in the study of Roman economy with a lively debate between the followers of a low count reconstruction of the demographic development in Roman Italy versus the scholars who favour a high count. Furthermore, quantitative studies have become serious scholarship and are no longer despised as only number games' as is apparent, for instance, from the new Oxford Roman Economy Project.' This is due to the great amount of published archaeological material such as terra sigillata, amphorae and shipwrecks. It is also illustrated by the shift from the predominant orthodoxy of the primitivism in the 1970s and 1980s to theoretical and methodological orientations inspired by the so-called New Institutional Economics and a diversity of approaches. But it has also rightly been pointed out that the struggle between primitivists' and modernists' , which still, a century later, continues to haunt scholarly discussions, often under the revealing name of minimalists and maximalists, signifying that the problem has often wrongly been reduced to one of quantities, mainly of trade. All the chapters of this book were originally published as articles or contributions to proceedings of different conferences between 1990 and 2010.

The theory came into being fifty years ago, and for a time remained obscure and limited; but during the last six or seven years it has rapidly attained great fame and an extensive literature, which is daily increasing, has grown up around it. It is not my intention to write once again the account, already given many times, of the origin of this doctrine; nor to restate and criticise the now well-known passages in which Marx and Engels asserted the theory, nor the different views of its opponents, its supporters, its exponents, and its correctors and corruptors. My object is merely to submit to my colleagues some few remarks concerning the doctrine, taking it in the form in which it appears in a recent book by Professor Antonio Labriola, of the University of Rome. For many reasons, it does not come within my province to praise Labriola's book. But I cannot help saying as a needful explanation, that it appears to me to be the fullest and most adequate treatment of the question. The book is free from pedantry and learned tattle, whilst it shows in every line signs of the author's complete knowledge of all that has been written on the subject: a book, in short, which saves the annoyance of controversy with erroneous and exaggerated opinions, which in it appear as superseded. It has a grand opportunity in Italy, where the materialistic theory of history is known almost solely in the spurious form bestowed on it by an ingenious professor of economics, who even pretends to be its inventor.
