Book Breaking the Chains of Gravity

Download or read book Breaking the Chains of Gravity written by Amy Shira Teitel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible story of spaceflight before the establishment of NASA. NASA's history is a familiar story, one that typically peaks with Neil Armstrong taking his small step on the Moon in 1969. But America's space agency wasn't created in a vacuum. It was assembled from pre-existing parts, drawing together some of the best minds the non-Soviet world had to offer. In the 1930s, rockets were all the rage in Germany, the focus both of scientists hoping to fly into space and of the German armed forces, looking to circumvent the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles. One of the key figures in this period was Wernher von Braun, an engineer who designed the rockets that became the devastating V-2. As the war came to its chaotic conclusion, von Braun escaped from the ruins of Nazi Germany, and was taken to America where he began developing missiles for the US Army. Meanwhile, the US Air Force was looking ahead to a time when men would fly in space, and test pilots like Neil Armstrong were flying cutting-edge, rocket-powered aircraft in the thin upper atmosphere. Breaking the Chains of Gravity tells the story of America's nascent space program, its scientific advances, its personalities and the rivalries it caused between the various arms of the US military. At this point getting a man in space became a national imperative, leading to the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, otherwise known as NASA.

Book Introduction to Astrodynamic Reentry

Download or read book Introduction to Astrodynamic Reentry written by Kerry Hicks and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated for 2015, the second edition of Introduction to Astrodynamic Reentry continues my tradition of teaching atmospheric entry from an analytical perspective, with finding closed-form solutions being the preferred approach. The over-arching goal is to instill an understanding of how "families of solutions" behave as well as the general trends, tradeoffs, and nature of atmospheric entry. My approach is to use easily visualized variables to solve the analytical problems first and keep them (more-or-less) consistent as we move to the computer for the harder problems. This is a "back to the basics" approach for a new generation of students who've become more comfortable with numerical solutions than analytical ones. The pages are loaded with equations because I've included the details of most of the derivations. This book pulls together many classical analyses and presents them in a consistent notation for the first time. It provides a convenient starting point for an analytical understanding of atmospheric entry, with plenty of references to those original works. It ties together results that were originally published years apart by different authors. And, peppered throughout, you'll find some new approaches and results.

Book Accretion of Extraterrestrial Matter Throughout Earth s History

Download or read book Accretion of Extraterrestrial Matter Throughout Earth s History written by Bernhard Peucker-Ehrenbrink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year Earth is bombarded with about 40,000 tons of extraterrestrial material. This includes microscopic cosmic dust particles shed by comets and asteroids in outer space, meteorites, as well as large comets and asteroids that have led to catastrophic events in the geologic past. Originally considered only a curiosity, extraterrestrial matter found on Earth provides the only samples we have from comets, asteroids and other planets. Only recently mankind has started to actively collect extraterrestrial matter in space (Apollo program, Stardust mission) rather than to wait for its delivery to Earth. Still, most of our knowledge of the origin and evolution of our solar system is based on careful studies of meteorites, cosmic dust, and traces of large impact events in the geologic record such as the mass extinction that terminated the Cretaceous Period and led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. This book summarizes our current knowledge of the properties, origin, orbital evolution and accretion mechanism of extraterrestrial matter accreted on Earth and sheds light on accretion processes and fluxes in the geologic past. The chapters in the first part of the book are arranged in order to follow extraterrestrial matter from its origin in space, its orbital evolution on its way to Earth, its interaction with the Earth magnetosphere and atmosphere to its more or less violent collision with the Earth's surface. In the second part of the book several chapters deal with the present?day flux of cosmic dust and meteorites to Earth. Finally, several chapters deal with the reconstruction of the accretion history of extraterrestrial matter on Earth, starting with the most recent geologic past and ending with the very early, violent accretion period shortly after the formation of Earth, Moon and other solid planets in our solar system.
