Download or read book Marine Interfaces Ecohydrodynamics written by J.C.J. Nihoul and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings describe physical and biological observations (including remote sensing observations) made at such diverse marine ergoclines as pynoclines, fronts, water-sediment and water-ice interfaces in different locations and environmental conditions. Mathematical models are described which are used to investigate the phenomena, providing a common language for their interpretation and the bases of the ecohydrodynamic study of marine interfaces.
Download or read book Modern Geography written by Gary S. Dunbar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the developments in the discipline of geography from the 1950s to the 1980s, examining how geography now connects with urban, regional and national planning, and impacts on areas such as medicine, transport, agricultural development and electoral reform. The book also discusses how technical and theoretical advancements have generated a renewed sense of philosophic reflection – a concern closely linked with the critical examination and development of social theory.
Download or read book Sustainability Today written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: this book contains additional research papers submitted for a meeting on sustainable development and planning organized in 2011 by the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT). WIT has a long and very successful record of organizing conferences on the topic of sustainability, which requires an interdisciplinary approach. Any sustainable solutions that are derived solely from the perspective of a single discipline may have unintended damaging consequences that create new problems. Thus effective sustainable solutions require the collaboration of scientists and engineers from various disciplines, as well as planners, architects, environmentalists, policy makers, and economics. These experts must not only communicate with each other effectively, but also understand the social aspects of the problem at hand. The contents of the book reflect that interdisciplinary approach. The topics covered by the papers in the book include: City Planning, Regional Planning; Social and Political Issues; Sustainability in the Built Environment; Rural Development; Cultural Heritage; Transportation; Ecosystems Analysis; Protection and Remediation; Environmental Management; Environmental Impact Assessment; Indicators of Sustainability; Sustainable Solutions in Developing Countries; Sustainable Tourism ; Waste Management; Flood Risk Management; Resources Management; Industrial Developments.
Download or read book Volcanic Lakes written by Dmitri Rouwet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to give an overview on the present state of volcanic lake research, covering topics such as volcano monitoring, the chemistry, dynamics and degassing of acidic crater lakes, mass-energy-chemical-isotopic balance approaches, limnology and degassing of Nyos-type lakes, the impact on the human and natural environment, the eruption products and impact of crater lake breaching eruptions, numerical modeling of gas clouds and lake eruptions, thermo-hydro-mechanical and deformation modeling, CO2 fluxes from lakes, volcanic lakes observed from space, biological activity, continuous monitoring techniques, and some aspects more. We hope to offer an updated manual on volcanic lake research, providing classic research methods, and point towards a more high-tech approach of future volcanic lake research and continuous monitoring.
Download or read book Active Volcanoes of Chiapas Mexico El Chich n and Tacan written by Teresa Scolamacchia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication summarizes the studies carried out at two of the most active volcanoes of Chiapas (Mexico): El Chichón and Tacaná. El Chichón erupted explosively in 1982 killing more than 2000 people being the worst volcanic disaster in Mexico, and Tacaná produced two mild phreatic explosions in 1950 and 1986. Only after these explosions a surge of new studies began to unreveal their volcanic history and impact. This book presents the state of the art advances in topics related to the geologic setting of the two volcanoes, their eruptive history and composition of erupted products, the hydrothermal systems and their manifestations. Volcanic hazards and risks and possible mitigation plans are discussed based on the experience of the catastrophic eruption of El Chichón that occurred in 1982. The book will also include previously unpublished material on the flora and the fauna of the region and archaeological and social aspects of the area that is inhabited by indigenous people.
Download or read book Dam Maintenance and Rehabilitation written by M. Cabrera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the life of a dam, changes in safety standards, legislation and land use will inevitably occur, and functional deterioration may also appear. To meet these challenges, these Proceedings from a panel of international experts assess, define and re-evaluate the design criteria for the construction of dams and the many attendant issues in on-going maintenance and management. Authors include international specialists: academics, professionals and those in local government, utilities and suppliers. Practitioners from these same fields will find the book a useful tool in acquiring a comprehensive knowledge of managing and retrofitting dams, so that they can continue to meet society's needs.

Download or read book The Sustainable City IX written by N. Marchettini and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 1767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing the proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Urban Regeneration and Sustainability this book addresses the multi-disciplinary aspects of urban planning; a result of the increasing size of cities; the amount of resources and services required and the complexity of modern society. Most of earth’s population now lives in cities and the process of urbanisation still continues generating many problems deriving from the drift of the population towards them. These problems can be resolved by cities becoming efficient habitats, saving resources in a way that improves the quality and standard of living. The process however, faces a number of major challenges, related to reducing pollution, improving main transportation and infrastructure systems. New urban solutions are required to optimise the use of space and energy resources leading to improvements in the environment, i.e. reduction in air, water and soil pollution as well as efficient ways to deal with waste generation. These challenges contribute to the development of social and economic imbalances and require the development of new solutions. Large cities are probably the most complex mechanisms to manage. However, despite such complexity they represent a fertile ground for architects, engineers, city planners, social and political scientists, and other professionals able to conceive new ideas and time them according to technological advances and human requirements. The challenge of planning sustainable cities lies in considering their dynamics, the exchange of energy and matter, and the function and maintenance of ordered structures directly or indirectly, supplied and maintained by natural systems. Topics covered include: Urban strategies; Planning, development and management; Urban conservation and regeneration; The community and the city; Eco-town planning; Landscape planning and design; Environmental management; Sustainable energy and the city; Transportation; Quality of life; Waterfront development; Case studies; Architectural issues; Cultural heritage issues; Intelligent environment and emerging technologies; Planning for risk; Disaster and emergency response; Safety and security; Waste management; Infrastructure and society; Urban metabolism.
