Book The Southern Handbook

Download or read book The Southern Handbook written by David Wragg and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Railway may not have been the most glamorous of the ‘Big Four’ companies that emerged from the grouping of 1923, but it was the great innovator. In the 1930s the Southern pioneered the first main-line electrification and created the largest electrified suburban railway network in the world. It was also one of the few to offer regular departures and the first to run true international services, introducing the ‘Night Ferry’ through-trains from London to Paris using special ferries. Forming part of a series, along with The GWR Handbook, The LMS Handbook and The LNER Handbook, this new edition provides an authoritative and highly detailed reference of information about the Southern Railway.

Book The Railway Grouping 1923 to the Beeching Era

Download or read book The Railway Grouping 1923 to the Beeching Era written by Bob Pixton and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When King George V ascended to the throne in 1910, world trade was increasing and at home the country’s private enterprise railways were booming with larger trains and more freight being carried than ever before. Over the next fifty years the country had experienced not one, but two world wars. Railways had been forcefully reorganized, not once but twice, eventually becoming state owned. With the Government now in control of the railway’s finances, reformation was on the horizon in the medicine of Dr. Beeching. This volume sets out to chart the passage of the railways during these turbulent times. Contrary to popular belief, life on the railways during these times was not all doom and gloom but times of innovation, competition, new buildings, new lines and the spread of electrification. This was the era of faster, larger, non-stop expresses, streamlined trains: we even showcased our best trains abroad, not once but twice! More and more people were taking holidays by trains and holiday camps emerged. Challenging the position of steam engines were new diesel locomotives. The Festival of Britain (1951) and the Coronation of Elizabeth (1953) saw the country emerge from the devastation and crippling debt after World War 2. On the horizon were devastating rivals that wounded the previously unassailable position of steam trains: motor lorries and family cars. With looming unsustainable finances, the Government solicited external help to help sort out matters.

Book Lament for an Ocean

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Harris
  • Publisher : McClelland & Stewart
  • Release : 2013-07-09
  • ISBN : 1551994763
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Lament for an Ocean written by Michael Harris and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northern cod have been almost wiped out. Once the most plentiful fish on the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland, the cod is now on the brink of extinction, and tens of thousands of people in Atlantic Canada have been left without work by a 1992 moratorium on fishing the stock. Today, the Pacific salmon stocks are in similar trouble – victims of the same blind, stupid greed. Angry, accusatory fingers have been pointed at various possible culprits for the collapse of the cod – at the Spanish and Portuguese, who for hundreds of years sent ever-bigger fleets to the Grand Banks; at the factory-freezer trawlers, which “vacuumed” the ocean floor for the prized fish; at those inshore fishermen who circumvented the rules governing the fishery; at the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which is responsible for managing the fishery; at the harp seal, the cod’s competitor for food, whose numbers have exploded in recent years; even at Nature, for lowering the temperature of the ocean. In Lament for an Ocean, the award-winning true-crime writer Michael Harris investigates the real causes of the most wanton destruction of a natural resource in North American history since the buffalo were wiped off the face of the prairies. The story he carefully unfolds is the sorry tale of how, despite the repeated and urgent warnings of ocean scientists, the northern cod was ruthlessly exploited.

Book excerpt: This is the casewrap-hardcover version of the 2nd in a series of 4 books and is the sequel to 'The Fantastic Journey', published by Arima, available from their website or from Amazon, ISBN 978-1-84549-311-0. The 3rd: 'The Haunting of Eddie Compton' is also available from Lulu.com, as is the 4th: 'Heaven on Earth'. 'Anywhere And Nowhere' is a tale of fantasy and adventure. It is 1963, and friends Len and Eddie have each received a special gift through the post. They are then taken on fantastic journeys from their home in Fenton-on-Sea. In the end the boys find it difficult to distinguish between fantasy and reality. 'Anywhere And Nowhere' is a good family read and is suitable for most ages, particularly if the reader seeks the nostalgia of England and, particularly, East Anglia, in the early sixties when 13-year-old-boys still dreamed of traditional adventure. The author is a retired Deputy Headteacher of a boys' Grammar School and lives on the Lincolnshire coast.

Book The Urie and Maunsell Cylinder 4 6 0s

Download or read book The Urie and Maunsell Cylinder 4 6 0s written by David Maidment and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one in the Pen & Sword Transport History imprint in the ‘Locomotive Portfolio’ series and covers the family of two-cylinder 4-6-0s designed and built by the Chief Mechanical Engineers of the London & South Western and Southern Railways between 1914 and 1936, which survived well into the era of British Railways. The N15 ‘King Arthur’ class of express passenger engines were the mainstay of the Southern Railway’s passenger business between the two world wars, but both Robert Urie and Richard Maunsell built mixed traffic and freight locomotives of a similar ilk forming a ‘King Arthur’ family of locomotives for all purposes that were simple, robust and long lived. This book describes the conception, design and construction of the N15, H15 and S15 classes and the N15X rebuilds of the LB&SCR ‘Baltic Tanks’ and their operation in traffic before and after the Second World War, until the withdrawal of the last Maunsell 4-6-0 in 1965. The book includes extensive personal recollections of the author, who both saw and travelled on hundreds of trains hauled by many of these engines in the 1950s and ‘60s, and gives a brief summary of those that have been preserved on Britain’s heritage railways. The book is copiously illustrated with over 200 black and white and colour illustrations.
